The USGS reports that a 3.5 magnitude earthquake hit 16 miles northwest of Covington, TN at 8:26 a.m.

WREG-TV reports no damage in the area.

The New Madrid fault line is about twenty times larger than California’s famed San Andreas fault. The biggest earthquake in U.S. history happened in the New Madrid seismic zone in 1812.  The fault line has been more active over the last few years.

Quakes have rattled residents in Illinoisand Indiana over the last year.   Eastern Arkansas felt a quake in late October, making the quake the largest in the NMSZ in several years.

An earthquake that destroys Arkie State and Ole Miss and improves Memphis into the ground..... interesting to think about.

The biggest earthquake in US history was a 9.2 in Alaska in 1964. The New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 were some of the largest in the contiguous states however.

Wouldn't destroy Ole Miss. Would be a nice little shake and we would have some buildings damaged. But destroyed? No.

Vicksburg still good! The bridge may be a bit inadequate, though.

We've had a few that we've felt up here in Louisville but haven't had one of those in about a year or better.

I am not sure what the hell that map is supposed to represent but I don't see how it could possibly be related to the New Madrid fault zone. Why is there water covering Utah and parts of Colorado? lol

Also the quote in the article about the New Madrid fault being larger than the San Andreas is just flat out wrong.

Careful here.

Trying to compare earthquakes from the early 1800s to the mid 1900s is tricky at best BUT IMO the New Madrid earthquakes in the early 1800s were indeed stronger than either the Alaskan or SF earthquakes. Any earthquake that makes the MS River flow backwards for 3 days and made Reelfoot Lake (10 miles long) is a badass earthquake.

Wiki (yeah I know but good info)

Don't forget Jackson and Meridian have been getting small quakes as well. That is all the way down the fault line. Scary stuff.
