So I had planned to go out of country somewhere this summer but am putting it off till next year. Instead im gonna Don Draper it(road trip it for you non watchers) across the country to see some friends and places.
Any serious suggestions for places(cities, parks, restaurants, bars etc) I should visit along the way? Heading out from Tuscaloosa. Places I gotta hit: Dallas, Laramie, WY.

Laramie, WY.
Where the frick do you go from there? Me personally, I'd head west to Seattle and the Olympic Peninsula, take the ferry from Port Townshend or Port Angeles, WA to Vancouver Island, drive as far up the coast as I could, and just disappear. No need for round-trip tickets.

Drive to Bellingham, Wa, take the Alaska Marine Highway to Skagway, AK and drive back through Canada.

Given the 2 places that are musts, I would suggest 20 out of Tuscaloosa and straight to Dallas. From Dallas go north to I-40 and head west with Williams, Arizona as your major destination. You can stop in Albuquerque if you want, and I would suggest a slight detour off 40 to go through Petrified Forest National Park.
When you get to Williams, go north to the Grand Canyon. Once you've seen the canyon, either go back to Williams and take 40 to Kingman and then US 93 north to Vegas or go east of Grand Canyon and take US 89 north. Either way, your next major stop (not counting Vegas if you go that way) is Bryce Canyon/Zion Canyon National Parks.
Leaving Bryce/Zion go north on I-15 until it hits the junction with I-70. Take 70 east across the San Rafael Swell, into Colorado and head for Denver. Tons of stuff to do around there. US 287 goes north from Denver right into Laramie. Rocky Mountain National Park is an easy detour along that route.
If you are in Laramie at the end of July, drive east to Cheyenne and check out Frontier Days.
Coming home, take I-80 east until you get to Lincoln/Omaha, then I-29 to Kansas City, then I-70 to St. Louis. From St. Louis, take I-55 south to Memphis and then I-22/US 78 from Memphis back to Birmingham (or grab US 43 outside of Hamilton and go straight back to Tuscaloosa that way).

I'm jealous. Always wanted to do that and want to do it sometime in my life...just don't know if I have the guts to choose it over a "real" vacation or trip.

What's the best month of the year to do this?

Some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Only Yellowstone would come close or beat it.
Left Atlanta drove to Paducah, KY. got up and went from Paducah to Lincoln. Drove from Lincoln into Cheyenne on day 3.
Stayed in Cheyenne 3 nights and did Frontier Days. Drove from Cheyenne to Laramie and then down to RMNP. Stayed 2 nights in Boulder/Denver.
From there across 70 to 15 to Bryce Canyon. Stayed there 2 nights. From Bryce to Vegas for one night. Vegas to Williams and stayed there 2 nights with a trip up to Grand Canyon.
Then from Williams east on 40 through Petrified Forest. Spent one night somewhere in New Mexico, the next night eastern Oklahoma or western Arkansas and then drove home via Memphis and Birmingham the next day.
Now that was with 2 of us driving.

That's not possible. I think they have a law.
