There's a meme going around right now saying if we split the Lottery jackpot between everybody in the US that each person would get $4.3 million and we'd end poverty.

Are we really at a point where people can't do simple division? I mean we even have calculators that will do the work for you. Yet people keep sharing this meme thinking it's true...I really don't want to believe America is this dumb.

I might go off on the next person in my newsfeed that shares this thing.

If you start typing 1.3 billion into Google, the first thing that pops up is: "1.3 billion divided by 300 million." Can people really not look at that number and know roughly how much that would be?? Even if you get it wrong, surely you aren't dumb enough to say " it looks like about 4 million."

I'm troubled by the math part of that a lot, but I'm more troubled by A) what the general populace would do with something more mathematically sound, like 100,000 each, if it got that high , and B) the attitude that just thinks, we should redistribute that. What point do we get to stop taking other people's money in that scenario?

My sister at Christmas made some comment like, "if we just took the interest earned every month of the top 1% that they're "hoarding" and gave it to the bottom 99% we could wipe out debt and poverty"

The math part of that is stupid to begin with, but at what point to we get to stop taking things from people? Interest from their "hoarding," people that have more than one property, people that own a business, people that make more than 100k? just seems like a slippery slope.

I hate when people use the expression sheep, but its astonishing how blindly people share these things just because they want it to be true.

The American public, by and large, are incredibly uneducated and have no common sense or reasoning skills whatsoever.

if it's about the math, i'm just saying say we gave 100k to everybody. i know that's not what the math is today for the current jackpot.

That would require a 30 trillion jackpot. First of all, do we even have that much money? And second of all, that shite ain't happening without the rich playing and the rich don't play the lottery.

Yep and I replied with the same thing to everyone who posted it into my feed. Needless to say I irked some folks when I called them dumber than a 3rd grader.

Do people not understand that Capitalism and drive to be the best at something to get yours is what America is based on at it's core?

But rap and rap culture is all about getting yours. But the same people want to redistribute. It doesn't make sense.

No, that is the myth perpetrated by those in power to keep power. In early america wealth resided more with individuals and local or regional power. That has been corrupted by organizations with national or global power. The misdirection means control of the masses as wage slaves akin to sheep being fed for their economic fuel - wool or meat - while never letting a local shepherd at least look out for their best interest.

Spend time really talking to your parents and grandparents and you see just how skewed monopoly has replaced real competition. The old adage in computer speak of "garbage in, garbage out" has just been realized in american economics to replace the "rebellious" nature of early america with the monarchies and dictators of the rest of the globe prior to the American Revolution.

Capitalism at the local and regional level is best as it allows the humanism of the local markets to not be overtaken by the greed inherent in non local ownership of the distribution of goods. In simple terms, when the president of a multinational corporation resides in your city, the inhabitants will experience their largess based on the rents drawn from other cities that get funneled to your city. This is great if you are a "chosen" city, but that may be 1 city in 100 or 1 city in 1,000.

Think about it.
