Fraud Identity/Theft Concerns - "Yes" Phone Calls

Most of us have probably heard of the scams involving robo-calls and fraud calls basically aiming to get you to respond "yes" as they record your voice. Well, I fell victim to that today at work. In my job, I get calls from all over the country so it isn't uncommon for me to get a call from an area code with which I'm not familiar. It's also not uncommon for those individuals to have heavy accents. I got a call today on my desk phone here at work, I picked it up and they said my name.....I responded with "yes." They hung up promptly.

Had this call come through on my work cell or personal cell, I wouldn't have even answered the damn call. What do I need to do other than keep a very close eye on all of my accounts? I use the "CreditWise" service from Capital One which does inform you if any accounts are opened under your name. Anything else I can do/need to do?

I would start by saying "this is him" or "how may I help you."

Seriously though, that sucks. Make sure to monitor your accounts for any suspicious activity.

What exactly do they do with your "Yes" response?

Seems like such BS. Why do they need MY voice. No one that could authorize any charge or account in my name could distinguish my voice from any red-blooded southern American.

Snopes has no data to support it.

What I've always thought when people talk about the grave danger of saying yes. How exactly are they going to use my voice? Are there people out there in charge of authorizing transactions / opening accounts that are using sophisticated voice technology that will verify my voice?

I honestly don't know how it would work. I found this LINK from ABC News where the FCC claims they can use the recording of your voice to authorize fraudulent charges via telephone.

Nevertheless, I just went to the sites of the 3 Credit Reporting Companies and did what I can do there. Honestly, everyone should probably be going there anyway. I do keep tabs on my credit score and # of accounts. TransUnion has TrueIdentity and the TrueID mobile app that can be pretty handy. On the app, I locked my TransUnion credit report. You can unlock it at any time according to them. There are also options to file an Initial Fraud Report for a 90-day period....so there's that option as well.

My vanguard accounts have my voice on file to use as a password. Not sure how they do it, but it works.

Wife answered one the other day, some foreign dude asking for her email and password. She said it is gofrickyourself.com and my password is never call back. He said you bitch. She hung up and he kept trying to call back
