Why does Mizzou have such bad fans?

Even before the boycotts, we have the worst, most fair weather fans in the SEC. And it makes no sense. Cardinals, Chiefs, and Blues fans are all passionate and loyal. Missouri isn't a fair weather fan region by any means, like you'd think of LA or Miami. So why do MU fans always jump ship when times get tough? It's honestly embarrassing and I feel for guys like Terrance Phillips who are all but begging to play in front of an average crowd.

I disagree. Teams that don't win in Missouri don't get support. I can only speak from the KC side. Royals is obvious. Chiefs normally don't go long in between winning seasons but even when they do you will see lots of empty seats.

fify

the entire lower section is blue hairs that don't show up and if they do they get mad if you stand.

they could get way over 5k in there right now if they offered 5 or 10 dollar tickets to students and let them sit in any open seat by half time. It would look good and help the team

Make them even cheaper for students with a valid ID.

Based on what the pro teams are doing, they also need to make sure the stadium and arena have world class wi-fi so as to keep the kids connected and eliminate any reason not to come.

If the Cardinals had back to back to back seasons of only 40 wins I'd bet you'd hear some bitching and see some empty seats. Some would show and all would be hoping for a change and some wins. This is where Mizzou is now. Bitching about the fans when a team is this atrocious is ridiculous.

I noticed you didn't mention the Royals in that thought.

It's no different than when the Royals, Chiefs, Blues, and Rams all sucked.

The students have prime seating and there are usually a couple hundred that show up...the AZ game was the biggest game of the year at home by far, and the student section wasn't half-filled; that included free Chik-fil-A and freaking door prizes. It's not just the oldies that don't come, it's at least as much on the students too.

I hate to sound super old (but I'm about to) but when I went to school (just) before the arena was built, 90% of students had to sit in D for games, and we would sit on the damn floor with our feet hanging over the balcony because D was almost completely full. If we had seats that were as good as the student section is now that corner of the arena would have been packed for every game.

Mizzou has done a promo this year for $5 tickets to non-con (minus AZ) and $10 conference (minus KY) games, so they're trying. What I don't know is how much tickets are for students.

They have some issues with the system, I think. I believe I read somewhere that the student tickets were "sold out" for the Arizona game and students couldn't purchase any more despite less than 50% of them being used.

They buy them and then try to sell them. They're college students trying to find a way to buy the next 12 pack. Or at least they did for football.

Win and the students will come too. Going to games where you get embarrassed by an Arizona or struggle to beat North Idaho A&M Tech just isn't fun. For college kids its just about what is fun on a Wednesday night or Saturday. Right now, this program simply isn't fun. If I were a student, I'd probably still go just because I enjoy going to sporting events. The rest are just looking for a good time and right now, again, the games are just not a good time.

It's boring and bad basketball.

You can't be both. Be boring and win (see Wisconsin under Ryan). Or be bad and be exciting (see Loyola Marymount in their down years under Westfall). But don't be both (see Kim Anderson. Or Doc Sadler.)

Regarding poor fan attendance, I'll go back to what is ancient history for most of you. To wit:

in 1975, we made it to the Elite 8, followed by a 21-8 season in 1976. In '77, we dropped to 14-16 and in '78, we were 13-15.

The next year, attendance was so poor that boosters were buying up tickets to give out in hopes of putting more butts in the stands. Dick Walls, owner of the Heidelberg, bought 5000 tickets in the D section and handed them out at the 'Berg to anyone who would take them with the only stipulation being that we'd "actually go to the game." Even then, we could sneak down to the C or, sometimes, even B sections unnoticed.

In '79 we made the Sweet 16 and the crowds eventually started improving a little, for whatever reason. At the time, the feeling was "No one really gives a shite about Missouri basketball."

Following 2 bad years, "fans" abandoned the team. "Fair weather fans?" Yup. They were then and still are. And then, as well as now, students, especially, didn't flock to the games...even with free tickets.

*Edit* the word was Dick bought 5000 tickets. Don't know that for sure, but he sure gave away a lot of them to us.

I fell like I can speak for 90% of Mizzou fans.

I live 2 hours away. To just "go" to a game, I need to know if they have a decent shot at winning. Not saying they need to be the Vegas favorite, they just need a shot. Here is an example. I went to almost every Mizzou football game, because I felt like they had a chance to win the game. I don't get that feeling with the basketball team, which is why I haven't gone to a game in 2 years.

Ive always thought about how cool it would be if the Amtrak went through columbia, and had a very reasonable price. Unfortunately neither or those 2 things are the case.

I do blame though, the residents of Columbia(to a certain extent).

I think it's probably time for folks to get over it and come back, but I think midweek games were mostly populated by locals when Mizzou was still at Hearnes. When they built the arena they priced out the loyal locals who had season tickets for decades, and a lot of folks won't go back. At least the sample size of four that I know felt that way; they ended up dropping their seats they'd had for about 20 years and haven't been to a game since. You ended up with businesses buying up good seats from all over the state, and can't find folks to use the tickets. When teams were really good you'd find folks who would drive 2 hours to go, or other folks who would scalp tickets who lived closer for a game now and then, but when they're terrible nobody wants to go. Now of course, you can get season tickets in the lower bowl a bit cheaper than you could when the place opened, but the damage has been done.

Crummy teams have led to me getting to take my boys to games we otherwise couldn't have gone to, as a family of 5 going to games isn't a cheap proposition when the tickets are $50 apiece, but I can scalp lowers for under $10 a seat for every game but AZ and KY (AZ was $20 apiece) so they are getting to watch a lot more basketball in person than they otherwise would. Hell, most games it's cheaper to go to a game at Mizzou and sit up high than it is to go to a HS game, which is nuts and a little sad. To be honest, I look forward to when we're priced out of the market, because that means they'll be good again...

If we're waxing nostalgic: I remember being in high school/college (late 80s/early 90s) and loving those mid-week games at Hearnes. On a random Tuesday in the winter, you were usually guaranteed something awesome for a couple of hours.

I swear there has never been anyplace on earth colder than the distance between your car and the Hearnes Center entrance at around 6:45 pm in February.

Then, as soon as you got in, the warmth and the smell of popcorn hit you like blanket. Mini-Mizzou playing in the background, as the Antlers questioned the parentage of opposing players warming up.

By tip-off, 13,300 people in black and gold were primed to make that weird, vertical, sinus infection green-seated dump rock and roll. God damn, that place could get loud.

Would love to attend one more kU game in that place.

Oh, well...
