Missouri

Yes, folks, Missouri is an SEC job but that in and of itself doesn’t bestow a God-given right for it to be one of the country’s best jobs. In fact, I think this job is significantly more difficult than most experts think.

Being in the SEC is great for the program’s national profile, but winning a championship in the league’s gauntlet is a huge challenge. I also have serious concerns about what the conference affiliation means for the local ties. Is it really an advantage to potential recruits to play so far away from their families just because it gets them on ESPN? I’m not convinced.

Still, it is a large school that has a huge alumni following that craves football success. The budget and facilities are there for the right coach to take advantage of, and Gary Pinkel showed they could be competitive in the SEC even without the recruiting benefit of the affiliation.

The Tiger administration should be looking for a big personality to fill their vacancy. They will need some star power if they’re going to win the national recruiting battles necessary to become one of the SEC’s elite teams.

I’m dubious of their ability to attract this kind of candidate. I find it much more likely that they end up with a MAC head coach or top assistant. A candidate like that could be successful, but there’s going to be a pretty significant chance of failure as well. This is a difficult and crucial hire for the future of Missouri football.

brownmajic - If you are going to quote some so called "expert", at least give his name and link it.

Like everybody, he has an opinion and an a-hole.

His name is Rucker Haringey on Fansided.com.

Programs he RATES ahead of Mizzou:
Virginia
Maryland
UCF (not even a P5) - proves Haringey is a pinhead.
South Carolina
UGA - okay
USCw - okay

I know nothing about this bozo, but he sure likes the East coast teams.

One of the NFL sites had Mizzou rated 3rd best job. That was before UGA canned Richt.

We need to stop worrying about where we stand and hire the best man for the job at hand.

Urban Meyer isn't walking through that door.

Rhodes is out there doing his due diligence. He knows better than any of us where this program stands, and who is interested.

Just relax and let things take care of themselves.

He took this job knowing this day would come, it just came sooner rather than later.

USC just hired their interim coach, because they finally realized that big splashes don't always equal success.

We'll be ok guys, there are things to fix, and it will take a couple years no matter who the hire might be.

Mack walked in the door with a list in his hand. Let him do his job.

It's a good, not great job.

With a very good coach we can compete at the highest level.

We need a 3* that plays like a 5*. Hard to find. Maybe GP should take a look. He found several of those.

I almost feel like the staff hires are more important. Almost but not quite

Yet.....most of the pieces are in place for it to be a great job. It's in a lot better shape than it was 15 yrs ago.

I think Mizzou is an underrated job. Columbia is a great college town.

How many schools pay over $4 million? How many schools are in the SEC? How many schools have a loaded roster you can walk in right away and compete?

This is not a rebuild job like South Carolina. It is not a dumpster fire facility wise like Miami.

Mizzou is a top 25 program right now. The next coach will determine if it's a top 15 program in the future or a top 40 program.

Agreed.

I'd almost give the job to a corporate CEO who could bring in a Littrell-type OC and Odom-type DC.
