Good read.

I feel bad for Kul. He's been so successful as a DL coach it undercut Pinkel's desire to make him a DC.

I reject that.

The guy seems like a good position coach, that doesn't mean he's a big time coordinator.

I think the ladder climbing in coaching has gone too far.

Be good at where you're good at. Just because you're good at coaching a position doesn't mean you should move on to become a coordinator.

People have innate qualities.

Odom is a coordinator and potential program leader.

Kul is a likable, good fellow. A good teacher.

But he doesn't have that innate commander gene.

I'm sure he could go on and be a coordinator someplace, some shite school like Illinois will use it as a way to bring in better DLmen.

It's inevitable that he'll move on to that position somewhere.

But should he? Probably not. Be good at what you're good at.

Pure speculation on your part. Unless you know both personally.

Pinkel took a gamble in choosing Odom over Kuligowski, hoping Kul would accept being passed over to stay on as one of the premier DL coaches in the country. It was the correct play by Pinkel, but obviously one that didn't go down easily for Kuligowski.

Otherwise, I agree with you - Kul will likely leave sooner or later.

When you're great in a niche role it takes humility and insight to resist the temptation to climb the ladder. Even Dave Steckel couldn't live with the idea of not taking the shot of climbing the last rung to reach the top.

I find that some of the more solid coaching staffs have positional coaches who have coached those positions many years. We hear about the hot names, and a lot of promotions start with media hype, but you can look at several top programs and find multi year position coaches. Having a passion and expertise in your job is a great way to live. Even in pro sports...Dave Duncan as a pitching coach for example. Its rare to be the absolute best in sports, being the best DL coach to me is better than being an avg DC.

Well said, but only Coach Kul's opinion will rule. Life is about choices.

I hope he stays and is treated extremely well. My gut says he goes some day like Stec.
