We old geezers remember more bad old days in football than you younger guys. In thinking of one horrid period, I looked at some stats which reminded me of the misery. We went to the Holiday Bowl in 1983 (Lost to BYU). Next bowl, again the Holiday, was 14 years later! (Lost to Colo. St.)

in the years 1984-1997, we NEVER had a winning season. Best was 5-6. Lots of 2 and 3 wins.

But at least basketball was pretty good then.

You young dudes ain't seen bad football! (Yeah, I know, and I walked 3 miles barefoot in the snow, uphill, to go to classes)

Yeah I lived those dark days too. I really thought we were beyond them and maybe we turned a corner where we could focus on getting to the next level. Doesn't look to be. I'm convinced Mizzou is just destined to fight like hell just to be decent or mediocre.

Reedus, unfortunately, Mizzou has always been quite happy with "pretty competitive." Mediocre in sports is all that's expected. I wonder, some day before I push up daisies, if we'll get some admins and an AD who want to be winners, not just "pretty good."

And now, further unfortunately, we're "pretty fricking awful."

It's gonna be up to the younger current fans to demand an expectation of excellence...rather than the apparent thrill fans get from a 6-5 season that takes us to the Tampax Bowl against some another .500 team.

We will never consistently compete at an ultra high level. We were a game away from the national championship a couple of times. That may be as good as it gets. I don't think it's because I accept mediocrity. I think a lot of it is just realism. Blue bloods win football championships. We aren't a blue blood.

Can we get to a New Years Day bowl again? Sure. Is a National Championship in football a realistic expectation? I'm unsure.

Great post Literalist, what frustrates an old fart like me is the fear of sinking back into those dark years. Our inability to attract high profile coaches in our bell cow sports is basically the fact that we are cheap as shite. Hey at least Coach Smith has wrestling rolling.
