PD is acting like Martin is the 2nd coming of John Wooden

Right now there are 8 different articles (plus 2 on Porter, Jr) on how this is the hire of the century (click link). I'll be honest I don't know a lot about Martin other than what I've read the past 2 days and I certainly hope he does undefeated as our HC but the early "love" is almost Rant like

His hiring should help some of the STL perception and coverage of Mizzou.
I was one of those "anyone but Cuanzo and a couple other guys." But he's not a bad hire and I think he addresses some areas of need quickly.
If the Porter boys come, excitement is back if nothing else.

I thought Mizzou should have hired him 6 years ago. He wasn't my top choice this time, but he will be good hopefully.
He has never stayed past year 3 so it's hard to know how good a coach he really is. Cal raising their academic standards after he got there has forced 5 or 6 guys that wanted to commit to California, go elsewhere. Tyson Jolly is 1 of them. He was a Mizzou target for a while under KA.

They covered KA for 3 years, so compared to KA, he is john wooden

I agree he's not a horrible hire.
I guess my frustration was with Sterks words of "hiring a proven P5 coach"..... On Paper Martin is average at best.
No amount of JQ spin changes this.
I also agree if we get our two pay for plays, the next few years should be a hell of lot more fun, watching MIZZOU BBall
Like BO, I'll support Martin until he gives me reason not too.

At least the SEC tourney in STL next year won't be a complete embarrassment.

Not a fan of his offense.
I knew he would up our recruiting profile in STL but not like this. It seems we just went from worst to first. Worse case scenario we are good but underachieve for 3 or 4 years and then move on to a hopefully better coach and hopefully keep most of the recruiting in STL. But it could go better than that. Really should be exciting.
Would like to see his contract

Bass - I'm bookmarking your post for next year. You may want to schedule your vacation around the SEC tourney

Martin is not average at best. He is an elite defensive coach. Offensively he needs to evolve to adapt to rule changes.
In hiring him Sterk is betting that he is average at worst.

Vacation? You just leave work and go to the arena. Ain't nobody got time to take no vacation.
Arch Madness was fun this year and I didn't even care about the teams.

Sorry, but averaging over 10 losses a year, is average.
Yes he's sound defensively, but his offense remains lacking.
wubilli, I respect your knowledge of the game, and the manor you present your opinions on the board.... But I'm judging Martin by his record on paper. Not my like or dislike for the man.
Again, he's our man, and everyone should support him... Let's just not try to spin him as more then he is currently.

When you trade off your broken down, totally unreliable '89 Dodge van, you're more confident about getting to work each day, even though your replacement car is a 2013 Malibu...and not the Alpha Romeo of your dreams.

I think we need to look at more than just the win loss record. He has left each job after 3 seasons, so it's hard to really get a good read on how good his teams could be if he stays. Based on his P6 record we can expect a win total around 18 next year.

Cuonzo a very good hire.
It was met with silly resistance at first, but after the Porter news broke he won over the fanbase within 24 hours.
He's not a good recruiter, he's a great one. That steady flow of talent rolling out of St Louis is coming to an end.
I also think the "he can't coach" thing is overblown. He's never been anywhere more than 3 years. Not sure how you can define a guy's ceiling when he's never really been anywhere long enough to become fully entrenched.
He's also going to be easy to root for. Not sure how he does it, but he's able to be an elite recruiter without being a slime ball that most are.
I'm in. I think the vast majority of fans are in. Should actually see some people at the arena for the first time in a long while.

I think it's probably not overblown. No one's calling Martin to get a new offense put in. Or to get X and Os advice.
But I do think his floor is above average.

If he gets the Porters, then opening night against Iowa State will be a sellout. Might be a shock to the current players that are used to home games with 5-6k in attendance.

I can see your point.. 18 next year would be a nice change of pace.
This is his team now.... Let's see what he does with the two pay for plays next year... Let's see how he recruits..... Let's see him evolve his offense

He's been a head coach for 9 years. Played under Gene Keady, coached under him for another 5. I just find it hard to believe he has no grasp of the game of basketball.
Then you consider that he's improved every team he ever took over, and both of his P5 jobs were bad situations when he got there.
It just doesn't add up. He made Cal a 4 seed in yr 2 and because his team was upset in one game he's a bad coach? No.
He'll get the players. Count on that. We'll see what he does when he can actually put some roots down. This is the best job he's ever had, and certainly the best fit he's ever been in. I'll be very surprised if he's not a winner here. Fit is just too good.

I didn't say he was a bad coach. I just don't think he's a good Xs and Os guy (esp. on offense). You can't find a quote saying he is from another coach or analyst.

Who said he was a bad coach? He has an average winning percentage.. It's not bashing to point out facts.
Most that weren't excited about the hire, were just sharing frustration (including myself) regarding his hire... After all it's Ok to believe there were better options out there... Despite what Mr It Factor believes.
We can agree to disagree that averaging 10 plus losses is or is not average.... I'm more then fine with that.
Can he do better here? Probably. Especially if he lands to pay for play brothers.
