Hey Tigers, going to be traveling to KC next thursday night. Wanted to see about getting some hotel and food recommendations. It has been about a year since I was last in KC and at that time I stayed at the Sheraton near that large outdoor shopping center south of downtown.
I don't really care about how fancy a hotel is as much as I like to have a hotel that I can walk to bars/restaurants. Also, I am not one that thinks a meal is better because of how much it costs. Watching football and getting a good feel for the city is what I am after. Any good suggestions?

Oklahoma Joe's. Its on the Kansas side. Anthony Bourdain has it in 13 places you eat before you die. It's usually less than $10.

Just called Joe's now(in case you google it). But your right, it's the best.

Woodyard is great too, the ribs are amazing. It's also unfortunately on the Kansas side. For a more hipster place, Q39 is OK, many will say its great but its only OK, Charbar is far superior.

...to St. Louis go to the Hill and eat Italian all day or to downtown St. Louis and have your choice.

I would recommend getting a hotel on/near the Plaza. There are lots of bars and restaurants on the Plaza and Westport is just north of you ($5 cab ride/uber, 15 minute walk). The stuff on the Plaza is a bit more family oriented whereas Westport is more your standard bar district, and can get a slightly rougher crowd late at night.
Downtown has some decent hotels as well and offers the Power and Light district, but I prefer Plaza/Westport, personally.
Restaurants:
Joe's Kansas City BBQ (formerly Oklahoma Joe's) - Kansas City, KS. Best bbq in town, call ahead or you'll wait in line for hours.
Q39 BBQ - Westport, Kansas City, MO. Best ribs in town, will probably be slammed all weekend but it's delicious.
Beer Kitchen - Westport, Kansas City, MO. American pub food; lots of beer. Small place.
Minsky's Pizza - Locations all around KC, but there is one in South Plaza. It's pizza. And beer. Best of the local variety.
Stroud's - Several locations. Pan fried chicken, delicious but you'll feel awful after eating all that grease.
Pierpont's - (inside Union Station) KC, MO. Classier establishment, cool bar and location.
Grunauer - Crossroads (just south of downtown), KC, MO. Austrian/German food. Classier establishment, my favorite restaurant in KC.

No way Q39 is the best ribs in town. No even close.

I love Minskey's pizza. Barbecue will be well covered in this thread so I'll just say any local chain that KC is famous for (Gates, Jack Stack, Bryant's, etc).
I'd throw Garozzo's Ristorante out there...it's one of the best Italian restaurants in KC. Go to the one in "little Italy" on the North edge of downtown if you can.
BreakawayZou's list is solid...Pierpont's and Strouds are great choices too.

Sounds like he stayed down by the Plaza last time...are there any decent hotels in walking distance of Power and Light? Love going down there but I always stay with relatives when I'm in KC.
Power and Light is definitely where I would want to be for great bars and nightlife, especially while it's still nice enough to be outside in the evening. The restaurants down there aren't the best that KC has to offer (some very good ones, just not the best), but the bars are great.
