Lock Analysis Film

I'm watching this tape on Lock vs Kentucky. And he gets fooled by the OLB on a screen pass with his pre-snap read and yes he underthrew a TD pass.

But I started watching the OL. I coach defense so feel free to correct me, it appears the OL is zone blocking and the movement by the DL has them totally confused. Right tackle whiffing, guard looking the wrong way while defender runs right past him. Didn't Ricker do this early last year but ended the year with a power blocking scheme? Zone protection works better with smaller quick feet lineman i.e. Denver Broncos. These guys don't seem to have quick feet and seem to be "reaching" at defenders. Maybe because of recruiting, the Illini had a smaller OL and that's not translating at Mizzou. Thoughts?

Thoughts? Ricker blows monkey nuts. Dude has been a dumpster fire since he arrived.

Yes, we are running a zone blocking scheme and it obviously isn't working. The point many will miss though is A LOT of this is on the backs. You have to be patient with this blocking scheme as it's designed to have holes naturally open up in the line. You can't barrel directly into the line as soon as you get the ball.

I have called for more traps, and power plays as it gives the OL the opportunity to fire off the ball and push the DL backwards. i think this would also benefit Witter as he doesn't seem to have very good vision so take that away from him and start giving him some pre designed holes to go through.

Just my armchair QB thoughts.

we've used zone blocking for years, since Henson was the OL coach, this is not new with Ricker.

Trying to use play action run schemes to throw from are going to lead to poor blocking looks, from a line that doesn't block that well in the first place, this is no surprise. Their Dline wasn't doing anything special, drop back from the DE and the WLB pushing gap is not especially tricky, we're just not very good.

Thanks or verifying that I was seeing zone blocking. While I agree with the poster who says the result "blows monkey nuts," am I right by saying the pass protection problem seems to be the blocking progressions when someone is not in your zone.

A few times when Kentucky didn't stunt, the OL built a nice pocket and Mauk camped out for 6-8 seconds. But when there was a stunt or shift, and blocking progressions come into play, it seems like there is a lot of confusion, leading to 1 or 2 DL's not being blocked at all. I see this over and over.

As far as the run game, zone blocking uses the 1 cut and run technique. Even though Mizzou has used smaller backs, they are very much straight ahead runners. Seems like the scheme is a mismatch for Mizzou.

IDK. I think the pass blocking has been alright for the most part. I haven't really pai close enough attention to tell if stunts have been giving us trouble. I think Maty has always created pressure for himself by not stepping up in the pocket when he's had the opportunity to do so. Lock seems to hold the ball to long at times, but I do like his ability to move within the pocket and create throwing lanes.

As for our run blocking schemes, if you go back and look when Yost was here we pulled lineman on the vast majority of our running plays. Since Henson has been here it looks like the majority of our run blocking has been a zone scheme. It worked well with Josey, Murphy and Hansbrough. It's not working with these other guys. I'd definitely like to see us incorporate some more trapping, pulling and basic power schemes. I think it would help.

Even with that giant NT they had, when they came straight at us we could handle it a little bit, thus the "Mauk stood in the pocket for 5-7 seconds", but as you should already know, if you stunt or overload blitz you are putting big, slow footed, not particularly agile OLs at a disadvantage, which they will be regardless of wither they are zone blocking or not.

The main thing for the offense is they need to handle the blitz by dumping the ball to the short route, esp over the middle, this is the main aspect of the game Mauk simply hasn't been able to do, and in his short tenure as "spot series QB", Locks looks like he can easily master. It's one of the big differences in why the offense looks very different with Drew in the game.

Since we've utilized the RB as a blocker it's curious we don't invite more big backs (preferred walk on status I mean), I know we had one a few years back, 250 lbs or so they called a "fullback". Hunt seems capable of blocking out of the backfield, but we could use a couple of these guys and give a power run look from time to time. Seems like that's too much to expect though, esp for "we do what we do".

It took Josey, Murph and Hans a minute to adjust to the zone blocking. Be patient and give these guys a minute to adjust. These Mizzou's o-linemen are to slow and not athletic enough for zone blocking.

Dont know if you remember, but last year late and especially against Arkansas, weren't they power blocking?

Is it a Ricker issue or Henson?

It's Hensons offense. Maybe the blocking schemes are what he wants.
