Always the best game breakdown.

LINK

Some of my observations

We all know Lock had a huge game, but his accuracy on the short stuff was very important and kept the chains moving. 16 of 21 is excellent. Especially considering a couple of drops.

Crockett had the most snaps of any RB. Probably not particularly telling given the nature of the game and Ross going down, but he also looked the best. Feed this man.

For all the hand wringing about Black. He got more snaps than JJ or Wingo.

The DL. For fricks sake. They essentially did nothing this game. Harris was non existent. It's hard for me to believe that the staff would intentionally neuter DLineZou but I'm not at all a fan of this new scheme. Interior guys seem to not be involved in the pass rush at all. Simply standing at the LOS at the snap. Don't care how it's done, but fricking fix this. We've got a chance to have a pretty good year if the defense can play to their capabilities.

Spot on again.

Here we've been worrying about the offense this whole off season... Only to be greatly surprised with what they've done the first two games... Heupel is Da Man.

With that said....... Who here thought we would be embarrassed after two games with our defenses (especially the DL's being unable to record a sack, much-less put any meaningful pressure on the QB......... So far, this new scheme is a sad joke. 428 yards given to EMU?? It's a shite show for now... Hope the ego's get pushed aside, and that changes are made.

Can't believe all the pouting about the DLine. I like that they are focused on stopping the run. The name of the game is stopping the other team from scoring, not how many sacks or TFL you get.

Hopefully some progress will show against GA and LSU in next few games. We have a nice 2 deep rotation going so that should help them stay fresh with Mizzou's high tempo offense.

This isn't a problem.

Which is what I'm concerned about. WVU scored 26, and EMU 21. Last year's D would have cut those numbers in half. When we face a GA or LSU, or even TN of FL, we could be in trouble unless the O can keep up.

Just one person's opinion.

If pouting, is pointing out, no sacks, no pass rush, and giving up a ton of yards... So be it.

If you are OK with what was once a top 10 defense, being reduced to what we have now..That's your call.

As I said in another post, it was asinine to change something that wasn't broke to begin with.

They aren't stopping the run.

I'm telling myself that they are holding back the defense until this week. They are going to bring pressure from different angles this week. Then go back in the shell for Delaware State, and then full defensive playbook for LSU and Florida.

Disruption on the DL is an excellent way of doing that. Probably the best way in fact and something we used to be very good at doing.

2 deep rotation

We SHOULD have that. To this point though, they've done nothing of note. Now, both WVU and EMU were noted as having an OL that was a strength. Georgia seems to have some issue there. Hopefully we get right this week. It's more than results though. They simply don't look good.

Last year WVU scored fewer than that twice. One of those was playing against TCU and Cross.
LSU gave up 22 to EMU last year.

I would like to see more of a pass rush, and the use of a nickel more. But I am in a more wait and see approach. Odom has been a great defensive coach, I think he will make adjustments if needed.

I believe in him as well, but they are needed.

I don't think the defense has been as awful as some think, but it should be better. We return too much proven production to not be.

Disruption.

That's key.

I've seen zero disruption, that's way more worrisome than sacks and tfls. It would be one thing if we were getting in the backfield and at least shaking up opposing offenses a little bit, but we're not even doing that.

I'm hoping the scheme has been light for scouting purposes, but I feel like I'm hiding from the truth. Saturday can't get here soon enough.

Am I the only one that is nervous about his ball security? I like the way he runs but he needs to protect the rock a bit better.

The DL

It's lack of execution, not talent but I am worried that they're trying to execute a scheme that may have too many variables or a high difficulty rating......see our O-line the past 2 yrs.

Also, poor tackling so far but that can be fixed relatively quick.

Anyone have an extra point they're not using? If so, call Barry.

McCann seems to kick the ball the same way every time, the trajectory looks exactly the same on every kick.

Tells me it's his mechanics, not his head that's messed up.

He almost seems like he needs to let loose on every kick.

I have been hoping this as well. Hoping, without any reason to, that they are refusing to show all their cards until conference play gets here.

Yeah, I doubt they were holding much backs vs WVU

I think it's as simple as they aren't playing to their capabilities.

Thats good and all, but we cant wait... we need results, like now. You only have so many games.

Guess you will like this. Even though ASU had lots of sacks and TFLs, it wasn't so much about the DL.

quote:

ARIZONA STATE D-LINE VS. MIZZOU D-LINE PAST 3 SEASONS

2015 Arizona State: 46 sacks (10 from linemen), 111 TFL (28 from linemen)
2014 Arizona State: 39 sacks (14.5 from linemen), 98 TFL (29 from linemen)
2013 Arizona State: 40 sacks (25.5 from linemen), 101 TFL (58.5 from linemen)
2015 Mizzou: 30 sacks (22 from linemen), 106 TFL (62.5 from linemen)
2014 Mizzou: 42 sacks (39 from linemen), 104 TFL (76 from linemen) 2013 Mizzou: 41 sacks (39 from linemen), 107 TFL (73.5 from linemen)

Excellent article.

R&R will take some time. And its not like a DL can't be aggressive once they learn the react "Keys." The Baltimore Ravens use R&R and they are very aggressive upfront. Their first SB year they didn't allow a 100 yard rusher all season.

R&R does rely on Lb's and safeties to tackle though. I've already noticed Sherrills in on many tackles. LB's would have more tackles but Burkett has been having some difficulties.

It takes some brains and football intsincts to master R&R. Remember Vernon Gholston who was a complete stud at Ohio State and a dud in the NFL? Guess what scheme he could not mentally handle with the Jets...R&R. It's going to take a while but the payoff can be big with this group.
