I'd have to point that back to you apparently.

I guess you can start by realizing my point, which is one of philosophy.

Do you fall on the autism spectrum? I ask this because you remind me of a lot of engineering students who couldn't... quite... grasp... how other human beings related to each other.

They'd often retreat into structures like this, usually some libertarian or Ayn Randian individualist structure because they had a hard time conceptualizing human social dynamics and felt safe with a more black-and-white structure.

That's not defending slurs. And it's not hard to distinguish the difference. So you either are pretty stupid or being willfully obtuse.

ETA: If I say it's Colin Kaepernick's right to protest during the anthem, am I condoning his protest or defending it? Or am I simply noting he has the right to protest?

Exactly, this is not an issue of philosophy. It's a very specific issue that's related to the biggest shitstorm in university history that's not even 1 year removed.

The university can not afford to look at this as an isolated incident in its own vacuum because it isn't. Sometimes you have to live in reality.

Do I really care that some idiot called someone a name? No, I don't. Do I think the safe space seekers need to grow a backbone? Yes, I do. That aside, the university handled this 100% correctly and had they handled the prior situation similarly we wouldn't have a massive drop in enrollment and 50k people at football games.

But let's go ahead and head down the same road again because...principles. SMH, frick no

In your mind.

The Communists have won. We're all almost too stupid to tie our shoes ourselves.

I see some here struggle with reading comprehension. Defending someones right to say something does not mean I agree with it. In fact, I abhor the things they said.

It's easy enough to distinguish between the right of someone to speak versus approval and agreement with what they are saying. That doesn't change with the distastefulness of their statements.

No, but I am a First Amendment absolutist. It seems those critical of my point don't understand the concept of how limiting speech is a detriment to societal progress.

Also, I appreciate your concern, but I assure you I am just fine. Law School is treating me well. First round of exams was brutal. This Ivy League East Coast culture is significantly different than that in the Midwest, but it is incredible having rousing discussions with those whom I disagree....something I am not enjoying in this thread.

You are 100% wrong and that is a stupid comparison.

And my goodness, what an asinine thing to go to bat for. "I don't condone what was said, but I'll fight for the right to say it" fricking why?

The guy is not going to be arrested. He doesn't need a bunch of conservatives white knighting for his right to call someone a ****.

At some point, you all are going to have to realize you're doing nearly as much damage to the university as the protesters and for what?

They can say whatever they like.

They don't get a free pass for it though.

Yep.

I'm a communist.

I respect you, and your opposing viewpoints. Plus, I honestly believe you're a stand up guy that I would hang with if given the chance.

If you got to know me, you'd understand, I'm not a commie, not at socialist, and barely a leftist. The leftist in me is only brought about by comments like that.

Think about it, you'll get it.

How dramatic of you.

Yes, we certainly must protect bigots from the consequences of racial slurs or our democracy will surely crumble.

I would like to point out 5th Tiger is one of the more non-conservative posters here.

You know how people get into situations they can't get out of? They create a new standard for every situation. If you govern your dealings with people in principles and not pragmatism, you can easily navigate new situations as they arise. If you run around jerking your knee at every breeze that arises, you look like Mizzou's administration the past 2 years.

Do you advocate for equal punishment for all students using racial epithets?

My statement was hyperbole. I don't think you're a communist at all.

The Marxists have set about to destroy our education system. And they have succeeded.
