It makes sense now

It always bothered me that Campbell chose Iowa State and Rhule abruptly halted negotiations. Rhodes was disclosing that he was looking to leave.
Baylor didn't search for an AD, they poached. Which means they put feelers out to Rhodes, so Rhodes knew he would have the opportunity to return to Texas. Rhodes has to tell potential HC hires he may leave, just to be fair to them and their families.
Rhodes did all he could to not hire Odom. But no coach is coming in when the AD that hired him will be gone in a few months. Despite the protest, the Mizzou job was a good job and it was strange that it seemed to garner no significant interest. If Rhodes was staying, I believe we have Rhule as a HC.

Rhodes really did drag his feet before choosing Barry.
There was a great deal of fan support for him to hire someone already on the staff that knew the Gary Pinkel way of doing things. So Rhodes was in a bad position to bring in an outsider.
There were 80 other non blue blood coaches out there trying to do the same thing GP did but not many were successful. It made sense to keep the job in-house to me.
Barry is off to a rough start but many first year coaches have a hard time. If things continue downhill in the years ahead everyone will be open to bringing in an outsider coach with fresh ideas. That wasn't the case when Rhodes had to make his choice.

Campbell was never under serious consideration for the job and knowing Rhoades I HIGHLY doubt he told anyone he was going to leave if he even knew at that point. Doesn't seem like something he would do.

But wouldn't telling potential hires be the right thing to do? Rhule cutoff negotiations, so there had to initially be some interest.

I would guess Rhule "cut off negotiations" when we told him he wasn't being considered anymore.

Right thing to do? Maybe. Rhoades doing the right thing? I seriously doubt it.
