Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

Had to take a lil break from the forum. I definitely was drinking the kool-aid early on. I just knew we would win 7 games and upset either Florida, LSU, or Tennessee.
I try to keep an open mind about the program, recognizing the disadvantages in both geography and tradition. I took our divisional championships for what they were, symbols of being just good enough in divisions that represented the weak side of that particular conference. I started to believe that at a minimum a conference championships could be won with ranked recruiting classes in the 30's, and some how that would translate to National Titles, although it's a fact that a team hasn't won a championship in the BCS or Playoff era with a 5 year recruiting ranking that low.
Honestly, I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. I hope there is one, but I can't see it anymore. I looked at what Harbaugh did with an average team when he took over last year and wonder, can that ever be us? You then realize he still had talent that just needed to be developed when he stepped in.In the past 5 years I saw programs like TCU and Ole Miss play on bigger stages, and wonder when will that be us?
It seems like when we get 4/5 star talent, we never fully realize their potential. When we see 4/5 star talent choose other schools over us, we give excuses on why a 3 star kid with offers from directional schools are a better fit.
Frustrated and I hope everything turns around, but damn it sucks right now.

Demetrious Johnson was on 590 today spewing a lot of non-football nonsense, but did state a popular opinion on Barry Odom and the state of Missouri football. Saying when the year is over they should buy him out and hire Les Miles.
I'm not sure if Miles is the right choice given his age, but it sounds like he's trying to update his pedigree.
"The breath itself has been awkward," Miles told Sports Illustrated. "I have enjoyed the time. I think I'm a better football coach today than I was the Sunday after Auburn. I have a want to win, win a conference championship and have the opportunity to play for a national championship still in me."

The first year or two when you are handed the keys to a Porsche are great.
The first year or two when you are handed the keys to broken down beater aren't so great.
Missouri is a good program but Odom wasn't handed the best deal. Maybe he's made things a bit worse while trying to get where he wants the program to be but you will have that. This year is a write off. Lets see how he does next year.

Of course there's a light. I just don't know how far away it is. Though I am now convinced the Mizzou will never play for a national championship in any major sport in my lifetime. I used to hold out hope that maybe all of the stars would align for just one season.

It still might.
We were a half of football away twice in the last 10 years.
Just have to have the right coach, the right team, and of course a ton of breaks.
I know it's bleak now, but these things go in cycles. Even for elite programs, but especially for those outside of the elite.
This is a complete rebuild in the truest sense though. It's going to be awhile.

Before the year, I would have told you that within the decade we will be fighting for a playoff spot. Of course after this year it doesn't look so great but all it takes is one positive year and faith will be renewed. Things look worse when the program is headed in the wrong direction. Just have to let it play out.

The Cubs just won the WS. Every sports fan should have hope at this point.

We've had 4/5 star go bust, just like every other school. We just don't have as many to burn.
We also have 2 star guys playing in the NFL
and does anyone want to see Miles 3 yards a cloud of dust offense for an entire game?

And the Royals won last year; both the Royals and Cubs were crap on the field just a few years ago. MU's football program is in better shape now than when Pinkel took over. We should be rolling again in a couple of years. (Wonder if it would be better to bench J'mon Moore...)

True.
I do question philosophy and development of identified top talent the last few years, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
I personally think Drew Lock would look like a stud under another staff with adequate talent around him, but we will now label him as a potential bust.
I think our philosophy and surrounding talent would have our fans label Ezekiel Elliot a 4/5 star bust if he chose us in 2013.
I believe our philosophy and approach impacted Evan Boehm in a negative manner and he never reached his true potential.
Nate Brown, an individual who played against top high school opposition, will be looked at as someone who has not reached their true potential/bust in our fan base due to lack of proper guidance and development.

The Cubs also spent the money in acquiring top end talent. In addition they have one of the top executives in MLB with the addition of Theo Epstein.
I guess it does show what competent leadership and the willingness to spend money to be competitive can accomplish.

Agreed.
As I said earlier, I was drinking all the kool-aid. I thought playing him early last year, with Mauk still in the fold, was a great idea based off of his talent/skill set.
He needed the redshirt year, and I believe a coach like Harbaugh would have recognized this.

You miss the point.
The Cubs finished last in the division the first 3 years Epstein was on the job. He was given time to build his roster.

Odom is gonna have time to build his roster. Just like Derek Mason has had time to build his.
