At the end of the day what did the CS1950 protest accomplish?

It got rid of the white suits who wouldn't look at the problems that caused the protest in the first place.

You can strike or protest for higher wages or better work environment on your job when you want to. Right?

Looks like there's a major protest going on at the U. of Virginia as we speak. These protesters have torches and probably burning crosses.

I said it before and I will say it again, I think Missouri was just snake bit in that they were the first big college campus to get hit with this protest.

Whether you agree or disagree with what the protests were about it came as a bolt out of the blue for the administration. Ferguson had seen severe protests but the University of Missouri has never, as far as I can tell, had a problem with racial animus. No one thought something like what happened would happen there.

Any major university in America would have been caught flat footed. Because it happened at Missouri and the other college presidents got to see the fallout they knew to stop this in its tracks when it started at their school. Missouri was just the one that got hit with it first. Y'all were the canary in the coal mine.

About the only major school I can think of that wouldn't have run into trouble with it is Arkansas. Mostly because the hilly terrain of the campus makes it damn hard to get a mass protest going and partly because the Fayetteville police will politely arrest you in a heartbeat if you do. Hell, the PD there has helped protest groups plan out where they want to be arrested.

It was an undeserved black eye for Mizzou but sometimes you just get really unlucky. This time it was you guys.

What problems caused the protests?

ETA: white suits? Are you 65?

Have wondered that myself.

the administration was never proactive about racial issues on campus.

as far as I can tell they've never really been proactive about anything.

Good read. Thanks. A few thoughts...

- I too would like to hear from zou brownmagic what he thinks caused the protests.

- Does Pinkel still get a statue? I'm not sure. If the money men who forced him out have a say, maybe not. His mishandling of his player's involvement ultimately derailed the program and helped cement the university's feckless public image.

- Mack Rhoades leaving was indeed a god send. Jim Sterk seems to have the Midas touch on all the key fronts: fund raising, facilities and staff. The perfect fit at a critical juncture.

Yeah, they should have been proactive about all those students standing up to bigots and protecting a gay black football player. What a racist campus!

To the extent one trusts the Washington Post, a fairly succinct rundown of lead up events: LINK

I think the flat-footed response, beyond just general ineptitude and stupidity, had a lot to do with Loftin and Wolfe bickering and each wanting to hang this on the other.

I agree mostly with Arksuli and have said in other threads - to no avail - that the rest of these self-righteous SEC fanbases are living in fantasy land if the think it couldn't have happened to them. Still could.

This could be a great thing in the long run. It gives a chance to refocus and retool the whole university. These types of organizations often don't get a chance to wholesale change, they are usually too bloated.

As long as leadership is good, which it sounds like it couldn't be much better on the athletic side than it is with Sterk, I say we will come out of this for the better.

*Football may never be as good as it was under Pinkel unless radical change happens. Too many teams are trying to be great in the SEC to expect the level of success Pinkel achieved the last 8 or so years he was at Mizzou.

Not magic, but I think the kids had every right to protest. I also think the school, AD and GP had every right to come down tougher and should have. They were in a tough situation though, I get it.

He will get one. Might take some time but people tend to forgive and forget over time. Most in STL didn't want anything to do with Pujols when he signed with the Angels. Not all, but I bet most would now welcome him back for a send off (not to play every day) if the terms were right financially.

Indeed the best thing to come out of the aftermath in my opinion.

No, he won't get a statue nor does he deserve one. He did good things at Mizzou, but not great. Statues are for the great ones.

Might be right. Dunno. Time will tell. I'm gonna guess that we label the job he did differently. I don't care if one calls it good or calls it great. What he did do is change the direction of a program.

Would naming the south EZ project after him and his bust in the entrance suffice?

I didn't ask if you cared. I'm asking if naming the football only facility after him would be adequate acknowledgement for what he did for the program.

Yes you did.

You're asking me to make a value judgment if it would be adequate. I don't know and I don't care. If they don't, I have no problem with that.

Do I think others would find his accomplishments deserving of having the football only facility or something else named after him? I suspect so. I have no problem with that either.

I think so. I'd like to see him get that.

I think he deserves it as well. Winning one of the CCGs and a title game appearance probably gets his statue.

The current statue honors a CFB HOF member who's program won 3 conference championships in the 4 years leading up to WW2. I don't think what GP did is quite on that level.
