If everyone makes it on campus in time for Fall practice it looks like the following will start or have a lot of reps.
Abbington RB
Beckner DT
Cueller OL
Doherty RB
Fatony K
Frazier DE
Howell OL
Any one of the WR's
That would be 8 players who will walk onto the practice field for the first time in a couple of weeks and get significant playing time.
Is that the most in Pinkel's career for new faces in the program??

We wont REALLY need Chase compared to TBJ, Fatony, Frazier, or Howell.
I really wish Chase would play some WR.

After watching the SCAR/Mizzou game last night on the SEC channel we NEED a big back on the goal line to punch it in.

Isnt Chase rather small and speedy?

Nope. He's a bigger back with speed and power. Like 6'2" or better. 210 pounds or better.

O wow, I always thought he was more of a Murphy

Those from the most recent recruiting class that I think are likely to see the field(6):
Cuellar OL - JUCO though so not like a true freshman playing.
Howell OL - See Cuellar
Frazier DE - See Cuellar
Abbington RB - See Cuellar
TBJ DL - Of the true freshmen, will obviously have biggest impact.
Fatony P - No brainer
4 of those guys are JUCO's and will likely see SOME time. The other 2 are the freshmen that I see contributing the most.
Sure to redshirt(9):
Owen/Lock/Harris/Hall/Hilton/Perkins/Moore/Jacobs/Warren
After that it becomes a bit fuzzier.
Doherty or Williams have a shot but it more depends on health/production of Steward/Abbington. If they are healthy/produce, both will redshirt because they would be 5th down the depth chart behind Hansbrough/Steward/Abbington/Witter.
Johnson/Hall/Smith/Floyd - I think 2 a most play. Maybe 1. Part of it depends on where the staff see Brown. They really seem to like him in the slot. If that's the case, I think it's hard for Johnson/Floyd to see the field. If they move Brown back outside, one of these 2 could get some playing time. I'm going with Brown in the slot and both of these 2 redshirting. I think Hall or Smith will play outside. Hall is probably the most ready. Smith probably has the most upside. I wouldn't be surprised if they use a redshirt year with Smith to polish his football skills and use Hall this year.
My 2 dark horses for playing time:
Howard and Agbamisere - With our lack of depth on the outside, I could see either Howard seeing PT at DE or them turning Agbamisere loose on passing downs and letting him simply be a pass rushing fool, going after the QB with little other responsibilities. Howard would be a more traditional DE and I really like how his tape improved between his junior and senior season. His senior tape left the impression that he may be close to being ready to step on the field immediately.
Cuellar OL - JUCO though so not like a true freshman playing.
Howell OL - See Cuellar
Frazier DE - See Cuellar
Abbington RB - See Cuellar
TBJ DL - Of the true freshmen, will obviously have biggest impact.
Fatony P - No brainer

I think that's the plan
Abbington
quote:
Henson said the staff “kicked around the idea” of playing Abbington at receiver, but for now the plan is to keep him at tailback. Henson compared Abbington to New England Patriots running back Shane Vereen, who lines up at various positions in different formations and caught 52 passes last season.

I think his high school page listed him at 6'4" but his JUCO page had him 6'2". Over 6' regardless.

Ability to contribute and opportunity to contribute are two different things.
Pinkel is a seniority guy to the core.
Fatony is a given. TBJ too.
Abbington, Cueller, and Frazier aren't freshman.

I saw a few practice highlights of TBJ going up against our o-line and he was just abusing them like they stole something. I don't know if it was our starting o-line or backups, but he was too fast and powerful that they could barely get their bodies in front of him. I just saw 2 plays.
Mauk said that the receivers from last year's recruiting class are the most athletic since he's been here and that Nate Brown is going to be a beast. Blair has been getting some love, also. The defense tends to think that J'Mon Moore is the best receiver at this point and that Leftwich has improved and when the ball is in his hands his speed could be deadly.

Howard and Agbamisere
I expect Agbamisere to get the redshirt. He just started playing football, and even with that burst he won't have to technique to deal with an SEC OL.
Howard is a big dude, so he might be able to contribute this season on size alone.

I have never heard Abbington referred to as a power back. He will run around you rather than through you. The biggest knock on him is he doesn't break tackles. Hope he makes it here because I think he will be really good in our offense.

Not sure I called him a power back. He is a bigger back. Does he learn to run with power? Who knows. There's at least a chance of developing that. Can't develop 5'10" into 6'2". Frankly, I almost worry that he's too tall for a RB

Probably so. I only put him in the dark horse crowd because mubobby weighed in and said the staff was contemplating turning him loose with his freakish athleticism and let him get after the QB and play havoc on ST.

I could see it if they think they are going to have trouble rushing the QB. I think, ideally, they'd like to RE him but if they feel they need some explosiveness off the edge then I could see him playing.

mubobby said it didn't become a thought until we start talking about losing Loud and Brantley.

mubobby
We need to get that guy to check in here every once in awhile.
If there ever was a legendary MU poster, that guy fits every detail.
