Lovie can stay as long as he likes. I'm not the least bit concerned. Illinois used to pull their share of kids out of STL. Again, he has a name now. That's it.

He won't be able to play the "hey, I coached in the NFL" card forever. He'll soon have to play the "hey, we can't make a bowl card"

I don't think he's some coaching savant. his tenure ended poorly at Chicago and he flat out sucked at Tampa Bay. He was a DC for the Rams when these kids were 4 years old.

You're getting all shook up over 1 kid who somehow struck up this, borderline weird, infatuation with him.

It's not like he's off to some barnstorming recruiting start. They are last in the Big 10 and about 25 spots behind our own modest ranking. Larry Boyd won't make their program and it won't break ours. Nor does it signify some dark cloud on the STL horizon.

Hell, if anything I'm very surprised he hasn't been able to recruit a hell of a lot better than he has.

Yup. Short term success.
We can't afford to go 5-7 though.

I ain't shook up about it. Mizzou will get kids from where ever. If they lose out on 2 guys they wanted in the STL, they will find 2 kids from somewhere else.

What is strange is I think that while it might open up STL for the Illini, it might actually hurt them in the Chicago area. As much as he is highly thought of for the most part for the defenses he had here, taking the Rams to the Super Bowl, the impression I have is that he's not as highly thought of by people in Chicago with the lack of success he had there.

And I predict he'll have Illinois going to bowl games within a couple/few years if not this year. They won't be bowl games of significance but I can see him getting Illinois to 6-6 or 7-5.

What's more disappointing is not what Lovie is doing but what Odom is not doing. There is some real talent coming out of STL in the near future. In this year's class, the guys from STL:

#1 Hayes - OU
#2 Boyd - Illini
#3 Adams - Illini

There really aren't any other high level D1 talent coming out of STL this year. You can argue Estes if you want but you know damn well that if he wasn't friends with Thomas and went to Belleville West or Lafayette he never would have even gotten an offer.

Adams is just a guy. He has potential, but we can get that same athlete anywhere.

Hayes and Boyd hurt, no doubt.

What hurts worse is that instate is so bad this year. There are no guys to make up for missing them here. We may find a few small town gems during the season, but we only have one MO commit now and are only actively pursuing one other one.

I think we only offered 6 in state kids. That's incredibly weak.

High school kids have had brief lives...and even briefer memories. They only remember as far back as last season. And other schools' recruiters make sure to keep reminding them of it.

A winning season is our best recruiting tool.

Can we have one, please, FB coaches?

Thanks in advance.

Truth. We have to have a decent year this year and make a bowl.

The Illini had 29 commits in 2016 with a bunch of 2* players and they were ranked 68th in the country and have 9 commits right now for 2017 and ranked 78th with a lot more 3* players and no 2* players.

Dont forget about kids on the east side like aj epensa who is headed to iowa. That probably had more to do with off season turmoil than odom dropping the ball but another great player not headed to the Zou.

Epensa's dad played at Iowa. MU's chance at getting him evaporated when Kuligowski left for Miami.

Our chances at Epensa were very slim anyway. I always figured he'd go where he was a legacy.

Plus a lot of people thought that Okie Light was the leader for Boyd and not Mizzou. Mizzou might have been third.

It is irrelevant at this point but I wonder what kind of relationship Ricker was building with the instate prospects for his position group. He and Walker both were assigned to recruit Texas and the number of higher rated offensive linemen from STL to head out of state since the move to the SEC is odd to me. Roderick Johnson, Brian Wallace and now Boyd and Hayes have went elsewhere. Hopefully Elarbee working with Ford can turn that trend.

Am I the only person on here that notice that Mizzou consistently competes for the same players as Iowa St. Illinois and Kansas. What's wrong with that picture

I think that might partially be a result of our history to find diamonds in the rough. those guys have to ride our coattails. no one is going to choose ku over lsu so they don't really pursue the blue chips.

We have to follow that script until we get back to winning. We were just about to turn the corner before the clunker in 2016.

Nothing. Except that whiny people with unrealistic expectations point it out consantly.

On Adams, Kornfeld always pushes his kids towards Illinois. Now he's got another excuse to do do. He's retiring after this season.

If Smith told Boyd he could start 4 years at Illinois what can we do? He wouldn't be doing that at Missouri, no chance. If Boyd thinks he's gonna win championships at Illinois We already have 4 better linemen recruited.

I know stuff like this is said at SLUH, but it's supposedly been picking up steam as a recruiting tactic around the area. Coaches are telling parents and kids they shouldn't go play with criminals from ESTL at Mizzou.

People said that recruiting would get better when we moved to the SEC and then they said it would get better when we won 2 SEC East conference Championships and it is still the same as always. Dave Matter has said this also which surprised me he had the guts that saying this could offend the Mizzou brass and the fans who would call him a traitor.

Who said this? No one stated that MU was going to start raking in 4 and 5* rated players from out of state.

Did people think that the move would deepen the pool of players for the staff to look at? Absolutely. The states of Louisiana, Florida and Georgia combine for about 750 FBS signees every year. Combined with the inroads already made in Texas, they have over 1000 kids to pursue in stead of just the 15 Missouri has every year and 450ish from Texas.

Matter is just a journalist with an opinion. The fact that he writes about sports doesn't make him any more or less knowledgeable about judging or developing talent than anyone else. MU currently has 27 players on NFL rosters. Tennessee has 31. Even before Butch got there the roster was built on top 15 classes and had over 40 4* rated players on it. MU is clearly finding players that can play at the next level and Matter can't dispute that.

What can be disputed is play calling and personnel decisions which were the root of many issues last year. Matter won't touch those subjects because he will get shut out by the staff. He does an decent job of writing about the team but I rarely find anything he writes to be ground breaking.

Not without a bagman. Honestly. Recruiting in the SEC is dirty. Sure Everyone Cheats. Until and unless we get into that game, much more than we are now? We will continue to depend on diamonds in the rough.
