MIZZOU offered before BAMA. How is that slow playing him?

Some kids get enamored by big name programs, some just want to get away from home.

GP has his evaluation system and doesn't just throw out offers, if kids don't like it then they probably wouldn't fit in at MIZZOU anyways.

Seeing that MIZZOU had offered by April, it's clear that MIZZOU was interested in and liked Scales.

This is a big truth. I feel this is why lost Hale and Ofodile. SOme guys just want to get away and get enamored by the big time colleges. Plus our facilities don't compare to other schools at this time.

The guys we get are the guys that love the hometown family feel and the guys who feel they are raw and can be better developed at Mizzou. The guys we lose are the guys who assume they are pro caliber purely because they were on a Bama, Florida, USC, etc roster or guys who are blown away by the facilities of a Oregon.

It's not to complain or talk bad about those kids. We don't have the facilities or the national titles and I understand why the chose to go that route.

Your statement is perfect! At the end of the day, its their decision whether they stay home or not. Mizzou is definitely not where we want to be so if a player is getting recruited by Bama, FSU, etc. What does Mizzou have to offer other than being their home state team? Honestly nothing... Just being real. I'm a Mizzou fan but its the truth. Talking bad about this prospect or that prospect doesn't help anything. How about you go donate money to the football program so we can match these top teams in the Facilities.

Bama misses on players as well. We offered several TEs before Scales. He just wasn't a top priority for us. If he wants to leave then so be it. I doubt offering earlier would have made much difference considering how quickly he committed to Bama.

It's not about who you miss. It's about who you get and I don't think we'll have much trouble getting another 3* TE elsewhere. Too much hand wringing over this kid.

That's circumstantial.

Mizzou's been able to watch him play in games, they've watched him in a camp setting -- yet they needed more on him before they could justify an offer. I say that's BS.

That's cool. Have you let the staff know your thoughts on this? I'm sure they would love a quick update.

This would only make sense for the point you're trying to make if they never ended up offering him.

No, it was posted. We were just too busy hand wringing about the 3* TE that went elsewhere to worry about the 3* OT that committed

Damn. I wasn't even worked up about missing on Scales and still missed it. Haven't watched his tape. Is he the Sam Bailey/Tanner Owen of this class? i.e. the next Britt.

What kind of player is Castillo?

"Trystan has always been a big kid. He was one of those guys who started for us the last two years. I know our defensive coaches wanted him to play as a freshman. We didn't bring him in as a freshman. He's one of those kids where he's got a great disposition as far as playing offensive line. He's a big, old kid. He's a good kid, would do anything for anybody. But when the lights come on, when he gets on the field, he's got the ability to turn it up and play the way you need to play up front.

"He's been a really good player. His sophomore year, he played guard. Last year, he played tackle for us. I don't anticipate him being a tackle in college. I'm guessing he'll probably play inside: center or guard positions. He also, last year -- most high-school teams, we're certainly that way, play the best guys at tackle and kind of work our way in. But we actually worked him some last year at center. He actually was our backup center as well early in the season. Then we kind of knew we needed him at tackle so we played him at tackle.

"I'm sure they'll work on doing the same things for him. He's a pretty versatile kid, really. He's a kid that played basketball most of his life, up until this past year where he really wanted to kind of dedicate himself to the weight room. He ended up not playing basketball. He's got really good eye-hand coordination, good feet. I'm really excited about him to see what will happen in his future getting in a college strength and conditioning program, because he'll really take off. He loves the weight room, and I think he'll really, really take off when he gets into that kind of system."

He comes from a run-heavy offense at Webb City. How does he fit into your system?

"I've always talked to a lot of college coaches. A lot of the guys that do a lot of pass blocking -- he's got good feet and all that -- but a lot of college coaches I've talked to told me it's probably harder to teach a kid how to run block than pass block. Our guys are used to coming forward off the line of scrimmage, and they said that's probably a harder skill for them to get guys to do when they get them in college. That's always kind of stuck with me.

"To play offensive line, you've got to be able to push people around. That plays in well to Trystan's skill set, I think. He's got big hands, uses his hands really well. My guess is it's not going to be a super transition to be able to pass block. There's going to be a learning curve, obviously."

He committed to MU a day after the offer came. Was he waiting on them?

"He's talked to me more about that since the offer. I've talked to a lot of different coaches -- Big Ten, Big 12 -- that have expressed interest. Everybody kind of wants to get you into camp. I was kind of working with some of those guys to try to get his schedule figured out for this summer, help kind of give him some direction on that. Honestly, I think it was a thing where -- for Trystan Castillo -- the ultimate opportunity would be to play at the University of Missouri. He really feels good about the possibility of playing there.

"We had another kid that played there a while back: Adam Spieker (four-year starting center from 2004-07). He's probably the gold standard as far as offensive line play at Webb City High School. He was a phenomenal high-school player. Unfortunately for kids at Webb City, most everybody is compared to him. That's the tough thing. We actually have an award named after him, the O-lineman of the year is the 'Adam Spieker award.' That tells you what our coaches and our program, how good of a player he was.

"Honestly, I think Trystan's probably the closest we've had to somebody like that. Adam was just a tremendous high-school player. Some of our coaches played with Adam, some of them coached him. He kind of set the standard as far as O-line play. Trystan's about the closest physically to what we've seen. He's really excited about it, and certainly we are for him."

What other schools had offered, shown interest in Castillo?

"He was planning on some visits -- K-State, KU, the University of Minnesota. Arkansas has called. I've talked to them. Those were some that we were kind of waiting to go visit. Then Arkansas State, Northwestern, Ball State, Memphis (offered), there's some others. Western Kentucky, others like that. Smaller Division-I schools. A year ago in the fall, he had a lot of others from smaller ones."

Maybe this will make some of you happy, because a JUCO punter will walk on at the Zou. Dayton Balvanz averaged 47 yds. a punt.

Gabe DeArmond @GabeDeArmond
Appears Ellsworth (IA) CC punter Dayton Balvanz has decided to walk on at #Mizzou this fall.

All jokes aside... punters can win games. So if he is that good I am very happy about this

To put it to rest. MUBobby spoke on TB regarding Scales. Offer wasn't even commitable. Other earlier offers would have had to say no before he could accept the offer. Surprised Bama offered.
