Will be interesting to see if we stick with the hawk style tackling or revert to traditional tackling. I'm betting the change was Mullen's call and we stick with it.

According to this article in the CL, it was all Diaz:

"Manny Diaz's first meeting as Mississippi State's new defensive coordinator attacked the core belief of every player in the room....

Diaz's philosophy is based on a system developed by Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks that's geared to prevent head injuries. Seattle practices its tackling without pads and helmets...

Diaz, who had implemented the technique at Louisiana Tech..."

Just to get a clear understanding of what this hawk tackling was I watched the training video, by Pete himself, of how it works and what it was. It is clear to me from watching the video that poor tackling is just a reflection of the coach and kids not practicing wrapping up and taking the wrong angles.

The emphasis is on keeping the head out of the game by using your shoulder inside the "strike zone".

By implementing this it should help reduce the head injuries and help keep kids in the game.

Now even if you switch to another form of tackling it does not mean that you will be better at it. It just means that you chose to go with a different way of doing it that may or may not be as safe.

The bottom line is that if you dont practice taking the right angles, wrapping up and learn to track a players hips, then you just are not going to be a great tackling team. Thats all there is to it. So this whole if we stop hawk tackling we will be better narrative is bullshite.

Just my thoughts.

Can't see how everyone is excited about this hire. He could be a great DC, but we have nothing to base that on.

The SECwest is not the place to cut your teeth as a DC.

I can't see how anyone is NOT excited about this, who on the table was better?

Would you prefer someone older who has been fired from multiple jobs?

I'm excited because he is young and rising. He should also bring an element of, and upgrade in recruiting.

Even cutting teeth can't be much worse than our defense last few years.
