USC linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator Peter Sirmon is set to be named the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State.

Peter Sirmon:

Playing career
1996–1999 Oregon
2000–2006 Tennessee Titans

Coaching career (HC unless noted)
2008 Central Washington (LB)
2009 Oregon (GA)
2010–2011 Tennessee (LB)
2012–2013 Washington (LB)
2014–present USC (LB) (Recruiting Coordinator)

Considered for multiple positions at Oregon.

Snipets from USC Board:

For our sake, it's better that Sirmon goes to Miss state than to Oregon. He's a great talent evaluator and has a c/o 2018 nephew at Loyola who looks very promising.

HELL

YES

This is an out of the park hire. The scheme is Mullen's, we don't need a defensive guru with decades of experience. We need a damn good LB coach who can sell ice to an Eskimo, and that's exactly what this guy is.

All of USC's best LB's are 100% a product of this guy, all but like one of their top 5 or 6 LB's are Freshmen and Sophomores. And having the #1 recruiting class last year pretty well speaks for itself on that side of things.

I will have to wait and see what he can do on the recruiting trail.

I don't really know anything about the guy, but sounds like a great hire. He's landed some really good recruiting classes, I'm not so sure how that will translate to the Mississippi game.

I like the move. Hire a young guy that wants a chance to be a DC and seems to be a good recruiter. He's got connections across the country and appears to be well respected. I wonder if they will do a Co-DC role for he and Deshea?

says the guy who works for Tennessee department of transportation. Probably a thug from Memphis and Tennessee alter.

Jk. Hope he can figure out how to catch up to the money train at TSUN.

I mean, hell, we just hired a coach from USC (the real one). Back in 2008, who in the hell ever thought that this would even be possible? We've come a long way.

It cracks me up how this guy was on no ones radar. Our athletic department routinely pulls surprises that people like Steve Robertson have zero clue about. He is the only person less accurate than weather forecasters.

Meteorologists are actually pretty damn accurate.

I get that it's just an old saying. But like a lot of old sayings, it doesn't make a damn bit of sense.

To be fair the rumor was he was not being retained. Not sure of that myself, either way hope he stays a while.

If that's the case I hope we got a good discount until he proves himself.

I'd like to comment on the hire but only know him from his days of playing LB with the Titans. Pretty good LB'er IMO.

Hope it works out.

No one really knows but he was also mentioned in the Oregon's DC search.

LINK

He was USC's interim DC for their bowl game btw.

He is responsible for all of the foot LB play USC has. Literally almost all of their top LBs are Freshmen and Sophomores.

Has one freshman who seems to be a tackling matchine, a clone of the way we used Richie Brown/ Cam Lawrence/ Chris White/ McKinney. Had a 3 INT game this year, actually, I think this guy may be the same person as Brown.

Then has some others who really dialed up a lot of sacks this season. The way he uses his LB's really seems to fit Mullen's system.

I am excited about the hire.

We get a young, up and coming coach, who in-theory knows how to recruit. I'd much rather take a chance on someone like that than an old, tired retread.

While I thought Diaz should be given 2 years at State to see how he did -- I'm not really sad that he left.

I'm confident our tackling will improve now as well.
