Let's say that the NCAA comes down and absolutely guts Ole Miss. I'm talking penalties that will be felt for a decade. Fitz leads State to 9-10 wins this year...Will talent finally consolidate at one MS school ?

Nope, they will go to LSU, Alabama, Auburn, etc.. Now if we continue to put guys in the NFL and they become quality starters then yes I can see that changing.

Been pondering this one a bit. I'm leaning towards "no" based on seeing a lot of the top talent leave the state last year, but we've had previous years where I think we could have landed almost all of them if OM was out of the picture. On a multi-year timescale I think you have to assume it works in our favor, actually.

I wonder how big of a boon having a competitive in-state rivalry is for keeping the fence up around MS? If OM does get nuked into irrelevance for a long enough period, do recruits start filtering out of the state at a higher rate? Does this happen if we manage to achieve and sustain some success over the next 2-3 years? All possibilities.

I don't think any kind of advantage is just gonna fall in our laps. Mullen will have to work at it, but the opportunity will be there.

Well said. I think if Mullen can even pick up 3-5 guys a year who he wouldn't ordinarily get that it's a huge win.

It won't be a sudden making of a powerhouse but it's a nice push in the right direction.

The big help will come with OL recruiting if we can finally start getting the one stud that comes out every so often from MS.

I don't think so, Ms is so small and everything becomes cyclical. There are a certain number of folks that will always go to the black bears, as well as a certain number that will always go to MState.

The thing the may hurt is that the black bears have focused on "out of state" recruiting, basically saying that in-state talent was inadequate. I am not sure if Mullen and crew have capitalized on that.

Of course at this point, Mullen can show the number of State folks in the NFL vs the black bears (regardless of recruiting rankings).

When they get a 2 or 3 year bowl ban and lose 30-40 scholarships we aren't going to lose an in state kid to them that we want unless the kid has a major connection to Ole Miss and even then he will probably just go out of State if he isn't a complete idiot. We aren't going to have to worry about them in recruiting for 3 or 4 years minimum so we better take advantage.

This is what I am thinking. If Mullen can land a few more top 20 guys in the state it will help us out tremendously. The rest can be split among alabama, LSU and auburn

I believe you're right. From our end just look at the Akers situation. Did he want to come here? I don't know. I want to say he did. Certain people pump a ton of sunshine when it comes to Ole Miss recruiting. But, with all of the NCAA stuff looming, he went elsewhere and out of state.

A good comparison are the kids from Louisiana. If they don't like LSU, they literally go anywhere else.

The kids who are Ole Miss fans may not go to OM, but they probably end up going anywhere but State.

Very good comparison. LSU is the only team in the SEC who doesn't have to recruit against an in-state school. They tend to lose kids to Bama, but never to Tulane, ULL, ULM, LA Tech, SLU, etc.
