What is the purpose of up and down votes on this site?

I guess I am just new. Why is it, when you take time out of your day...and decide to go on your computer to catch up on the SEC and it's awesomely fanatical fan bases, and their equally crazy opinions about anything that comes to their minds...that you can actually be "voted" for a stupid thing that you just happened to type, while just catching up and having a bit of fun? I don't get why "votes" are necessary here. Why judge?

Their whole purpose it to help the legion of LSU homers get as many positive A&M posts as possible moved or deleted. I'm pretty sure it says as much word for word in the rantard by-laws.

It's a self-monitoring system. Sometimes, you want upvotes. Sometimes, you want downvotes. Sometimes, you want a nice blend. I grade out at about 97%. Which is why I'm considered Tier 1. Don't even ask about Tiers.

Shitty posts are not my problem. Up vote or down. That is not my job. But, I still don't get the whole "voting system" on here. My thread has many "down votes" right now....but, at the moment, it is gaining the most posts. How can you "vote" for something...up or down....so quickly?
