Honestly, I was a freshman in highschool when he was hired and didn’t know anything about him. Didn’t really know anyone outside the SEC. The internet and Espn wasn’t what it is today.

Only thing I can remember was that there was talk of Stoops getting the job. Nobody wanted to follow Spurrier. Zook was outta left field. Nobody saw that coming. I also remember a big deal about Mike Shanahan having UF ties and there was rumors that he was tired of the NFL.

I didn't mind Meyer but certainly was intrigued.
I believe Petrino was a hot name, and I liked him at Louisville but we dodged a bullet

Meyer wasn't originally high on the list if i remember correctly. Probably only got the job because others turned it down and UF had a President from Utah at the time. I remember wanting Spurrier but we pissed him off with the request for a resume, or that is the rumor anyway. Stoops, I thought would have been good. I was excited about the Mike Shanahan rumor. Top coaches were not interested because of our reputation for having a whiny, spoiled fan base, the more things change the more they stay the same. That is why it's important to give Mac a full 4 years before making a decision on him or we will only be able to hire another second tier coach. Yes, Meyer was a second tier coach and exceeded all expectations while selling our souls to the devil.

Meyer was Foley's target from the start after Zook. He was courted very early on to beat Notre Dame to the punch. That's when Foley gave his somewhat infamous line setting the precedent of firing a coach midseason - "what should be done eventually, must be done immediately"
The Shanahan and Stoops attempts were after Spurrier left.

Spurrier-sama could still come back as the OC.
If he felt it in his heart, of course.

There was a rumor that Machen said he would have to interview, but Spurrier shot that down later.
As much I love Spurrier, it worked out and we ended up with the right coach at the right time.
