Thanks to the wonders of Facebook "memories," I discovered that it was exactly 10 year ago today that I first pulled for a Gators team. I was an SEC fan that wanted to see an SEC team in the BCS game.

At the time, I was working on a MA at Texas State, and someday attending Florida to earn a Ph.D. would have been so far off the radar that it might as well have been Pluto. My mother had previously lived in Florida, and I couldn't ever see leaving Austin to live anywhere down that way. Little did I know what was in store.

I know what I would like for an anniversary of my first dabbling into Gator fandom.

Lucius...my first exposure to Gator football was 1962 and we had a decent team led by a group of great players that were mostly jrs or sophs...Tommy Shannon southpaw QB who would lose his job to Spurrier early in 1964, Jack Harper RB who was gifted as a receiver also and he wore # 33...I got to know him better when he owned Millers Marina in Boca Grande and also started a boat building business making catamarans the Ocean Star....visited his plant and almost bought one, but bought something else. Hagood Clarke was a talented athlete who played both ways, which was common in those days of platoon football...DB/RB and had long career with Buffalo Bills.

We played Penn State in the Gator Bowl that year and upset them 17-7.(little did I know we would have to wait til 1965 to get another bowl)

In 1963 I have memories etched of that season...we started out 1-1-1 (no overtime then) losing to Ga Tech by 0-9 (still in the SEC), tying Miss State 9-9 and beating Richmond in a near upset 35-28 which alarmed some folks.

We still headed to Tuscaloosa to play the 3rd ranked Bama squad and upset them 10-6 and that proceeded 2 Ls out of the next 3 games 0-14 to LSU and 0-19 to AU. We finished 6-3-1...no bowl back then.

In 1964 some kid named Spurrier was ready at QB and by third game he was the starter as a soph.
