Rumors that Foley's role after retirement is screwing up our AD search. Quote from the article "North Carolina’s Bubba Cunningham and Arizona’s Greg Byrne. Cunningham supposedly withdrew his name from consideration the day before he was supposed to sign a contract with Florida.

Multiple candidates have voiced concerns about the plan for Foley to remain on staff in an emeritus role. Prospective ADs apparently aren’t thrilled about having Foley looking over their shoulder."

Foley has gone from being one of the best all time to a big problem for the University.

The man just needs to let the frick go.

Forgot this part of the article eh

Another AD told Wolken, however, that having Foley around should be viewed as a positive, and that the soon-to-be retired AD wouldn’t be intrusive. He even called the Florida position, “the best AD job in the country.”

They're actually interviewing people? I figured Spurrier would've gotten the nod.

I read that part of the article but our top two choices thought it a big enough problem to take their name out of the drawing so obviously it's not being viewed that way.

The best thing that could happen is Foley changes his mind and stays on.

Why in world would a Gator fan not support Foley?

He is by far the most successful AD in SEC history and probably close to the best in NCAA history. There has to be something personal going on for you to have these strong feelings against Foley.

Foley is not perfect, and most of his shortcomings have been related to the football team. And football counts for 75% of everything in NCAA athletics and 90% in the SEC. So some criticism is warranted in my opinion. He has hired 4 football coaches and there are some who say he is the reason Spurrier left. Of the 4 hires, 2 were terrible, one was extremely successful, but the coach burned out and we talked him into staying one year too long. Now we have Mac. I like Mac and he seems to be doing a great coaching job and an OK recruiting job, so although I am pretty happy, the jury is still out. And to give Foley credit for Urban isn't 100% accurate as we had an ace in the hole with Urban's old prez at Utah. And there was no other choice, Urban was head and shoulders above the rest of the available coaches.

That said, he is our greatest AD ever, but for so many years we didn't even really try that hard. Either we had wonkish dorks or lunkhead football coaches. Again, I appreciate Foley tremendously, but we are in the middle of college football's most fertile recruiting grounds, so for us not to be a top echelon school is a gross underachievement.

He was a great AD at one time.

His:

Neglect of athletic facility improvements and penny pinching

Hiring of unknown coaches in Ron Zook and Muschamp

Extending Muschamp and giving him another year after the worst season in 30+ years and then letting him walk to auburn to recruit against US.

The handling of the end of the Meyer era.

The handling of the Mac hiring.

And he wants the new AD to keep his assistants while he still works in the office down the hall.

His financial incompetence the last decade cost UF millions and if it wasnt for him being in an academic setting he would've been canned in 2013.

quote:

Athletic directors usually put in a contract provision preventing a coach from double dipping at another job if he is fired. Florida's Jeremy Foley is an experienced athletic director but somehow didn't use such a provision when Muschamp was hired to take over the Gators starting in 2011. When Florida fired him after last season, Muschamp got to pocket the full $6 million remaining on his deal and then double dipped by becoming the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the SEC at Auburn ($2.1 million a year). What does Florida get for giving Muschamp a sweetheart deal? Muschamp got the biggest recruit in the country, Byron Cowart, to choose Auburn over Florida. Yikes.

How about hiring of Billy Donovan
Hiring of Urban Meyer
Hiring of Kevin O'Sullivan
Other great hires that have led to the following results.

How about 27 team national championships since 1992?
How about 124 SEC team championships since 1992?
How about 24 SEC all sports trophy's since 1992?

On the financial side, The UAA is doing just fine.

Do you really think we will hire someone better?

OK, I admit Zook was a mistake, but remember several coaches turned us down because they didn't want to follow Spurrier.

Muschamp turned out to be a mistake but he was an up and coming coach in waiting at Texas and at the time was considered a great hire.

Everyone makes some mistakes but at the end of the day you have to look at the whole picture and UF has been one of the best overall athletic programs in the nation since Jeremy Foley took over the program.

Go Gators, i hope our success will continue after he retires.

He was great at one time. All sports trophies and softball titles don't pay the bills. Football does. Florida is a goldmine of talent and resources and JF got lucky when SOS was here and he made a great hire in Billy D. UF was a good program before he got here and it will be a great program after he's dead. SOS built UF football and Machen brought Meyer. Foleys bad hires in Zook, WM, and Meyer's last year shows he has zero clue about hiring and handling football coaches. He hired 2 coaches with zero HC experience at one of the best programs in the country and they both were disasters. Look at BD's replacement after Billy built UF basketball, we could've had a great coach but Foley settled on the cheap hire who hadn't even been to the NCAAT. Let him stick to the NR sports. Yes we can do better but as the OP linked Foley is in the way. He needs to go as he's costing US top candidates. 90% of fans won't remember who won the Directors cup or men's baseball title in 2002. They'll remember WM being the only coach in the history of CFB to lose a game holding an opponent under 120 yards of offense. Twice. They'll remember two gators blocking each other and they'll remember GSU. Great Ads don't let that man stay another year or give excuses about facilities. Great ADs don't give him $6M to walk to auburn and take our commits.

Let's have this discussion again 24 years after he has retired. Will we be better off? Only time will tell.

Go Gators.
