There isn't an exact science to recruiting rankings on any of the sites. Sometimes you have 5*'s who are complete busts in college, and sometimes you have 2*'s who end up being 1st Rd NFL Draft Picks, after their All American season.

Using the Rivals Commitment List Database for SC; Who would you say at the Top5 most underrated players who came to SC since 2002?
https://rivals.yahoo.com/southcarolina/football/recruiting/commitments/2014

I found 15-ish guys that I thought I could make an argument for the Top5 most underrated:
Jamon Merideth - 2* OT 2005
Jonathan Joseph - 3* DB 2004
Ko Simpson - 2* DB 2003
Fred Bennett - 3* DB 2002
Sydney Rice - 3* WR 2004
Stoney Woodson - 2* DB 2004
Jarriel King - 2* OT 2005
Lemuel Jeanpierre - 3* OL 2005
Captain Munnerliyn - 2* DB 2006
Pat DiMarco - 2* FB 2007
Tori Childers (Gurley) - NO Stars WR 2008
Justice Cunningham - 2* TE 2009
Kevious Watkins - 2* OT 2009
Dylan Thompson - 2* QB 2010
Connor Shaw - 3* QB 2010
Pharoh Cooper - 3* WR (they have him on there as a 4* now, but I remember them having him as a 3* on NSD.) Needless to say, he's now a 5*worth WR after his All SEC/All American year last year as a Soph.

If I had to pick (in order)
1. Pharoh Cooper - 3* WR (they have him on there as a 4* now, but I remember them having him as a 3* on NSD.) Needless to say, he's now a 5*worth WR after his All SEC/All American year last year as a Soph.

2. Captain Munnerliyn - 2* DB 2006

3. Jonathan Joseph - 3* DB 2004

4. Connor Shaw - 3* QB 2010

5. Tori Childers (Gurley) - NO Stars WR 2008
(Tori barely nudges out Jamon abd Ko Simpson here, just b/c he had no stars and earned NFL $ for years on practice squads.)

Jarriel King - 2* OT 2005

Was he recruited as an OT or a DE ... he was out of John's Island or somewhere like that right? Got in a lot of trouble with some girl maybe ... after having other issues? Had a heart murmur if I remember correctly - am I thinking about the right kid?

Out of HS he was an OT, then we looked at him as a DE when he didn't qualify the first time. He was a 4* DE, but then got an NFL contract as an OT. He was doing really well and was in line to make the Seahawks lineup, but some girl said he assaulted her. She later dropped the charges, but it was only after SEA cut him fearing that it was true. He's now playing up in the CFL.

Solid list, but I'd probably replace Joseph with Sidney Rice. Joseph had elite speed and he was a solid corner, but I don't think he performed at the level that Sidney did.

Are you talking about underrated based on recruiting rankings based on ow they ended up in pros or we talking about unheralded Gamecocks that played well in college regardless of whether they were pro prospects or not?

Based on star recruting rankings...hard to go against Sidney Rice, Ko Simpson, Captain, Jasper Brinkley, and Tori Gurley.

Based solely on college production vs expectations coming in...I think Dylan Thompson could be on list given I thought he'd never see a snap and was recruited to get Lattimore in. Also Nick Jones, Rashad Faison, Antonio Allen, and Darian Stewart come to mind.

Combination of those: first looking at their star rating, which is supposed to predict how well they will do in college and possible pro potential, and then comparing the difference in how they did.

So a 2* who was drafted in the 1st Rd, and had at least 1 All Pro year after 5 seasons would have a greater difference than a 3* who was All SEC, a 2nd Rd selection and has played 3 years in the NFL.

Antonio Allen

That's a good one too, he was a 3* out of HS, went to Fork Union, was a 4* Prep player, but then was All SEC at SC and he is who I will compare all Spurs to, he was the best at that nickel defense/spur position. He was drafted by the Jets in '12 and is still doing well with them

I’m not well-versed on the hidden gems in Columbia, but I’ll point out the obvious. Connor Shaw should be #1 on everyone’s list, not because of stats, but because he is a winner. He is defines being a “gamer” and leader. Most schools look at attributes not necessarily what’s between the ears.

Agreed. Shaw is the epitome of what a college football player is supposed to be. Humble, determined, hard as nails, and a leader.

After Shaw, my vote goes to Ace Sanders. That guy was criminally underrated by the entire conference.

Great list. I would add guys like Eric Norwood and Kenny McKinley on there. Both of them were 3-star and very good players. DJ Swearinger was also a 3-star.

Eric Norwood

The reason Norwood was rated a 3 star is because no one thought he would qualify. He was a guy that UGA wanted very badly but his grades were dismal for a while. I remember that he had to go to summer school to get his final GPA up to a 2.0 a qualify, and was initially rejected by USC's academic admissions office (if I recall, correctly). His academic turn around in college just shows that people mature at different paces; Norwood is one of the biggest success stories in the conference, if you ask me.
