WE WON!!!
That's the most important part.

What we were led to believe before the game.
Both unc and SC have new DC's with a proven track record of success.
UNC has 10 of 11 starters returning, a 3 yr starter coming back at QB, an All ACC WR in Q Davis, an All Fr ACC RB coming back in Hood, 2 All ACC OL.
unc is supposed to be able to move the ball and put up points in Fedora's HUNH spread offense.
SC's offense is unproven, questions at QB, WR, OL.
SC had more returning starters on defense too.

Offense
Mitch didn't have a great game, but I don't think you could fairly say he had a bad game either.
He completed 9-22 120 yds, 1 TD, 0 INT, 44 yds Rushing and 1 Sack.
He didn't turn the ball over.
He didn't force a lot of throws,
He used both his arm and feet to sustain drives,
There were 5 drops by the WR/TE/RB, (more on that later)
He read the pressure and field well,
and something that Dylan Thompson had a hard time with...Mitch avoided taking the sacks and threw the ball away. When they were about on top of him, he got it out.
He also led the final drive to run out the clock on the game....

RB's
Wilds didn't looks great, not bad, but not like he did last season.
Williams avg'd over 4 ypc, which was good.
Shon Carson avg'd over 18 ypc....HEISMAN

I wanted to punch David Williams after the 2nd pass from Mitch hit him in the chest and he dropped it. He turns his head upfield before securing the pass, rookie move.
Carson should get more snaps next week.
[/img]

WR's
Cooper is going to be the man, we all knew that.
Deebo is legit fast, but he needs to get open more.
Googer, he looks promising, big target, decent speed.
Still waiting on Adams to breakout, didn't happen this week.

OL
We allowed on 1 Sack. Awesome.
Great pass protection against a meh DL.
Good run blocking against a meh DL.
We rotated several guys on the line. Knott got knocked on his arse twice and had their NT blow by him for a TFL. All the snaps were good though. I felt like the OL was focused for the most part, save a couple false starts.

DEFENSE
DL
FACT: SC had 4 Sacks last night, that is equivalent to about 30% of our entire Sack Total from last year.
Sawyer and Griffin should be on the field together, even though both are 3 technique. They are monsters.
Griffiin had 3 Tackles and 2 Sacks... he only played 5 total snaps...!

The DL line rotation was awesome, we didn't have a bunch of hands on the hip, tired, loafers out there. Whoever was in charge of rotating the DL did a great job. We also didn't have any 12 man penalties that I remember.
Skai Moore is King of LB's Long Live The King.

Skai's first endzone INT was brilliant, a great read on the QB's eyes and stepped right into the pass line.
Skai's second endzone INT was great, he was in a soft zone, the QB was trying to hit the WR behind him and never saw Skai. It was a really easy INT, but Skai made the play and he was smart both times to take the knee for the free 20 yards, instead of running it out.
DB's did a decent job in coverage, I can't recall Elder at all though.
Digg's INT was awesome, another great play.
I thought overall we covered well. During the INT's we did really well with pass rush and coverage, which helped to force those turnovers.
The hit Isaiah Johnson put on that unc WR in the 2nd half near their sideline...lol, great hit, that was a tone setter for the rest of the game.

We gave up some yards, but we only allowed 13 points, that's fewer points than we allowed any Power5 team last year. This unc offense was supposed to be awesome, 10 starters returning, 3 year starting QB, All ACC OL'men, WR and RB...The RB, Hood was very good though. However...13 points...13 points, 3 INT's, two 4th Down Stops (0-2), only allowed five 3rd Down Conversions (5-13)... bottom line, 13 points. The Defense did its job.

SPEC TEAMS
Sean Kelly is the best punter we've had since Ryan Succop.
Sean avg'd 46.2 yds per punt. That bum, Hull, avg'd 41.5 yards last year, and that was his best year.
Sean hit 2 touchbacks, 2 inside the 20 yd line and 2 inside the 5 yd line. They didn't give him one of the ones inside the 5 that he hit, but they were fricking wrong.
Fry has a leg, he made all his kicks except the 56 yard FG, which he almost made. With a few more cheeseburgers, he'll start hitting those.
Our kickoffs were fantastic, they couldn't return any of them well. Kickoff and Punt Coverage was AWESOME, they allowed -1 Punt Return Yard(s.) If that was unc's strategy though and they didn't want us returning kicks, then it worked for them.

One of the biggest things was, we played smart on returning Kickoffs and Punts. We took a lot of free touchbacks and 25 yards in situations where we would've struggled to make it to the 20 last year. unc's kickoff specialist was good, he kicked it to the endzone and deep enough that we had to think about returning it, luckily we made the right decision. Our one return still netted 23 yards when we fielded the ball at the 1 yd line.

COACHING
Defense Coaches all did great.
Spurrier's play calling was good (except for the 4th down we didn't convert,) but we didn't execute on several of the plays. Dropped passes or the routes didn't develop and Mitch had to throw it away to avoid the sack/tfl.
Joe Robinson should be really happy with his Spec Teams though.
I also didn't think we looked tired out there, we played all 4 quarters and the team was flying around the whole time. I felt like we were in shape and as I already mentioned...whoever's job it was to rotate the DL did an excellent job.

CROWD
For a Thrusday, 6 p.m. game in a neutral city, it was meh. Ticket prices were too high, the unc upper deck was 75% empty, their unc club seat were a little over half full, and the pre-game student function carried over past kickoff. (it was off Graham St.)

Cheerleaders weren't leading cheers, more often then not, it was the fans leading the Game Cock cheer after a big play or score. Weird that I thought or even mentioned the cheerleaders were unorganized, I know, but I noticed it.

Selling beer in games is a plus, we should do this at Williams Brice.

Overall, BOA is a great venue. New screens, sound system, banners and overall cleanliness and F&B options are professional grade.

I didn't see any Game Day signs, little disappointed in that, but I didn't bring one either, so I can't really complain.

POST GAME FIGHTS
I started a GAME COCK cheer walking out of the Graham St entrance, a very large (I'm not a small guy, but this guy was about 6'6" 300 lbs,) unc fan got pissy and started mouthing to the SC college kids about 15 yards and 30 some people in front of me walking out. Punches started flying, the unc's fan girlfriend/wife/sister/IDKjustsomegirlhewaswith, started screaming for help and crying and trying to push him back and get him away. They started fighting right in front of a lone Charlotte Meck Police Officer who was about 5'10" 170 lbs and that guy just watched, didn't even try to intervene. He was outnumbered and GREATLY outsized. I thought the unc fan was going to absolutely destroy these SC college kids. His girl kept saying, "I love you, please stop," over and over while totally bawling and crying and so eventually he stopped hitting them. The college kids weren't bloody, so I don't think any of the punches landed cleanly.

Outside of the gate, there was an even better fight, b/c this one drew blood. 1 unc fan, middle aged, but in decent physical shape against 1 SC fan, who kept telling his buddies to back off while he and the dude threw down. He wanted to go 1on1 with the guy about 15-20 years older than him and he was in decent shape to. I watched that fight for about 45 seconds, and people were filming it, so I shouted 'WORLD STAR!!!'' Hopefully it makes it on there and I'll be famous.

The cops were nowhere near this, I didn't see any within eyeball distance and there were about 1000 people around (a half dozen filming on their phones.)

They needed more security coming out of there.

Good breakdown.

Williams has gotta learn to catch those passes outta the backfield. He does in practice, he was trying to run before he caught the ball last night though.

Wilds still runs too straight-up. Williams gets low behind his pads.

I thought Shon might do well - but again, he's good for limited reps. I suspect they'll use him late in games as fresh legs but who knows, after last night they may use him earlier, and more often.

We did have four sacks ... but we also had a lot more pressure in the backfield and I think I remember the UNC getting run out of bounds a couple of times, for losses, and also having to throw the ball away a couple of times to prevent taking a sack.

The kid from Kansas has to get under control a little better. He was flying around everywhere and he hit some of his own guys a few times.

Skai is a player ... a real playmaker.

Yeah, it was actually two consecutive plays there with about 9 mins left in the game where Spurrier pulled a Spurrier.

3rd and inches and he tries running off left tackle with Williams outta the shotgun. Bad bad call. Then it's 4th and a foot and he QB sneaks it with his back against the wall .... it should have never come to that.

If you'll going to go to Williams outta the shotgun you use his speed, quick pitch to him and let him go wide. He'll get a couple of yards every time.

Our DLine has real potential. Although I cannot remember seeing Wideman play last night - I'll have to check the participation sheet.

We were very fortunate at times last night ... but not Skai's two picks, those were just skill. He waited and baited both times and then jumped the ball - he's got natural instincts in those situations. It's an art for linebackers to do it and he is very good at doing it.

Also, the Diggs pick was excellent.

But we were lucky on that, what could'uv been a, pick six. I'll be surprised if Mitch ever does that again. He learned a lesson last night.

Again, I see serious potential in Mitch. He has the tools, he's just gotta learn. He delivers a good ball, he makes decent decisions most of the time and he has the ability to take off and pick-up yardage on the ground. Hopefully he will continue to improve. He's only a RSo.

UNC fans are asses for the most part ... so the crap they pull never surprises me. I remember the old ACC days and they were notorious for doing classless shite both in football and basketball. There were fights all the time back then ... in the stands, in the arenas, in the parking lots. One time they hung our players (basketball) in effigy along with a dummy of Coach McGuire's Son Franky. Coach McGuire wrote them off for good after that one. NC State and Maryland fans were almost as bad.

I'm still a little worried about our OLine play. We got very little push up the middle last night. Although, most of the time it did appear that we were getting low and trying to drive them back ... it's almost like we're too tall, or too big, to get low enough or something. I cannot quite put a finger on it.

Some people may forget how Connor Shaw was kept on tight reins by Spurrier in the passing game when he became our starting QB in 2011:

- 20-28 for 155 yds, 1 td and 2 ints, and rushed 16 times for 28 yds and 0 tds

- 10-18 for 87 yds, 1 td and 1 int, rushed 16 for 64 yds and 1 td

- 16-25 for 128 yds, 0 td and 1 int, rushed 14 for 24 yds, and 2 tds

- 6-12 for 81 yds, 0 td and 1 int, rushed 16 for 88 yds and 2 tds

- 16-18 for 217 yds, 3 tds and 1 int, rushed 11 for 90 yds and 1 td

- 14-20 for 210 yds, 3 tds and 0 int, rushed 19 for 107 yds and 1 td

- 11 - 17 for 230 yds, 2 tds and 0 int, rushed 19 for 42 yds and 1 td

Of course, in the first full start for Shaw - in the UK game with Garcia watching from the sidelines and just a couple days shy of being dismissed, Connor had one of his best passing games as a Gamecock:

26-39 for 311 yds, 4 tds and 0 ints, and rushed 15 for 42 yds and 0 td

But that game was with some stud talent around him, and a veteran 5th-year QB on stand-by to step in should he struggle. UK was well on their way to another bad season, coming into that game 2-3 and 0-2 in the SEC.

After that game, Garcia is dismissed during game-week preparations for Miss. St., then during the game vs the Bulldogs, Lattimore suffers his first ACL. After that, All Connor had to help him on offense was Alshon, a young Ace Sanders who had less than 400 receiving yds and only 2 tds on the season, and a young Bruce Ellington who hadn't yet established himself and had less than 200 rec. yds and only 1 td. And then an unheralded freshman RB named Wilds who was supposed to be red-shirted, but was forced to be the #1 back.

After that run-away route of UK, Shaw averaged 113 passing yds a game for the next 4 gms, and threw 2 tds and 5 ints. People were saying that Shaw wasn't a legit QB and that he couldn't throw the ball.

The staff started easing Shaw into the passing playbook as the season progressed, to where he averaged over 200 passing YPG and he threw 8 tds and only 1 int over the last 3 games. But those first few games were pretty tough to watch unfold....

IMO Mitch can be a better passer than Shaw - by better I mean more of a straight-forward passing QB while Shaw wanted to utilize his wheels more. Mitch is more like Thompson than Shaw IMO, and he'll become more confident with his passing as the season progresses and we should see him start to air it out a bit before too long.

We got UK - speaking of UK - up next at home, and they weren't a whole lot better than we and UNC were on defense last season. After UGA which should be a tough away game, we host UCF who struggled mightily in their loss to FIU or FAU or someone. UCF did have a top-10 national defense last season, but that was playing in the AAC of course, and it sure didn't help them against FIU or FAU or whoever.

So we'll have some opportunities for Mitch and the passing game to clean up the sloppiness and settle in. I fully expect to see Mitch averaging 200+ passing yds per game before this season is done, too.....

Someone sent me this gem from unc's HC's post game press conference.

On what went wrong with (unc) quarterback Marquise Williams:

"He threw it to the guys in the red and not the blue. I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t have an answer for you. If I would have had an answer I would have gotten it changed. I kept thinking that he was going to get it going...." -Fedora

I'm reserving judgment on Mitch. He had some bad throws and didn't get much help from his receivers, but he did take care of the ball for the most part and showed some mobility. The run game was very good. Definitely need some work on offense, but if we keep those positives up, we'll be in every game.

Defense looked much better. We still gave up some big plays, but tightened up in the red zone. Very much bend but don't break like EJ's defenses.

At the very least, I'm feeling better after seeing everyone else struggle. 7-9 wins looks doable.

Yeah, I don't want to knock Thompson.. but seeing Mitch be able to out run the fat asses on the DL and throw the ball away was such a relief after last year.

It was the perfect time for it, all these kids had their cell phones out recording it and the guys were swinging on each other. Several of the college kids "got it" and had a good laugh.

I think we were lucky to win this game. If Fedora runs Hood at the end, we are down 3. Still, the defense was improved from last year and Mitch did ok. At this point, what more can we ask for? Hopefully, we work out some kinks this week and beat Kentucky.

Seemed like Mitch was getting flustered by not getting the play call in a timely manner. Is this just Spurrier coming up with the best play or the signal coming off slow? Seemed like we were continually rushing to get the snap off before the play clock expired.

I think there may be a new clock rule that played into that first delay of game somehow.

From what I gathered it caused a problem with getting the signal in from the sidelines .... but Thompson used to complain about the same thing. At any rate, the coaches are taking responsibility for the problem and are going to get it corrected.

I hope they do. We cut it too close too often.

not really much to add to the thread. been a long few days since thursday. praying any future USC game at BofA is on saturdays only.

Gamecock crowd clearly outnumbered and much louder than the goats. Carolina Band shamed the NC band - again

biggest plus I took away was Googer will hopefully become the clear #2 target at WR behind Pharoh.

TE - Adams needs to catch everything thrown his way - period. Adams did make a big hustle play recovering Wilds' fumble.

Spurrier did a good job calling some easy passes for Mitch after him starting 0-5. CM was very fortunate the goat DB dropped an easy pick 6.

Williams is better than he played. Wilds too. Carson - better late than never in his career. keep it up!

Pharoh was the only WR who could get open. Googer is legit physically and will hopefully become the clear #2 option against UK and beyond. chances are WR be a week-to-week "who steps up this time?"

edit - Googer's two receptions were for 17 (3rd & 8) and 22 (2nd & 11). Terry G was also the guy who recovered Samuel's fumble on the KO after NC took a 13-10 lead with a minute-thirty until half. the recovery was at the SC25 and could have given NC a chance to go up 10.

OL - jury still out. young guys Park & Stanley are gonna have to contribute big time now with Waldrop now out with broken leg.

defense - the whole season will be predicated on bend but don't break and get the crucial turnover. I'm fine with that as long as creating turnovers becomes habit and infectious for USC. pass rush and pressure a big improvement from what we saw last year. the goats QB didn't do well when Hoke would change his looks in money downs. that resulted in 3 turnovers. media wants to say their QB gave it away but USC made that happen.

the team overall showed a lot more desire and urgency than most games last season.

it was about what I expected for a Spurrier/USC opener. I think Carolina excorcised a few 2014 demons by making key plays and holding onto a lead to win.

lastly - I would have kicked the FG to go up 20-13 with 9 to go.

I agree with that, it would've been the safer bet. We were avg'ing over 4 yds per carry though, so I also understand why he thought we could've made it.
