I find this hard to believe.

I think its far more likely that Kornblut's report comes out and hes pissed that he has to address the situation.

A rumor that you've agreed to accept another job can't be shot down with a simple "I'm not talking about job opportunities until after the season." You've got to deny it and you've got to address you players about it.

That makes him seem some what two-faced if he takes the job after the season, even if he hadn't really agreed to take the job

Exactly. If you're scared of a loss when you knew what the program looked like already, then to hell with you. This it's big boy football, and the athletic department is actually trying to compete in this miserable conference.

If Smart is up for the challenge, and it is a challenge, then let's roll. He's a better philosophical fit than Herman, IMO, so I'm not disappointed. I just hate that it appears, at least publicly, that we were told "No thanks" by our top target. Doesn't make the university look very good.

This is probably what it was but we'll also probably never know. PK needs to quit screwing around. I think we should revoke his press privileges just like SOS did with MoRon.

I'm just spit balling here, but what if the players maybe know who the new coach will be.

It would make sense that if it were Smart, skai would not have declared his intention for the draft. If it were Herman, maybe Coop would have stayed for a year in his offense to improve his stock.

Just a thought.

Doubt they would be told beforehand. Maybe like, an hour before, but not days or weeks.

Also, remember an agreement isn't final until both parties signed. It was reported yesterday that an agreement had been made in principle. If that were the case, and TH wanted more $ still, HYPOTHETICALLY he could easily let it leak that he was not interested in the job anymore to get more $ or guarantees (like the $10M for the Football Staff,) in order to put pressure on the AD to give him what he wants.

Herman has come out publicly and said he's not looking at contracts right now, but that is what he has to say. What everyone is forgetting is that he STILL has NOT signed that contract offered to him by Houston. IMO, I don't believe the yahoo report, I don't believe Herman pulled himself out of consideration. I think this is all just smoke an mirrors. I could absolutely be wrong, but this is exactly the type of misdirection I expected in a big time college football hiring process.

SCRooster, do you recall if Lou Holtz removed himself from consideration before he was hired at SC?

The early leak by kornbutt was not the problem ... that's all part of the process these days. But I can tell you, it'll still hurt kornbutt with Tanner.

Anyways, as far as Herman having second thoughts after the Citadel loss - let's remember, this guy is mensa, he thinks things through methodically and weighs all his options. That Citadel loss would be enough to give some people great pause ... and in the end LSU could very well play into this as well.

Owell, it's over.

Kirby Smart is going to work-out for the best. He's got a great pedigree, just no HC experience. But the major plus for Smart is that he actively lobbied for this job and there is something to be said for that.

If it is Kirby, I don't think he pulls out at the first new job opening either. That may actually be for the best.

Yeah it's disappointing to not get Herman, but Smart will be a great hire if all this is true.

There was a great gif someone made and I cannot find it to save my life...

A pic of Kirby with "Coach Smart" across it and next to it a pic of Dabo with "Coach Dumb" across it.

Yeah I do. We had by far the most time to prepare and get ready. Definitely was a good move.

I think there has been a lot of speculation about the staff Smart could bring in. The pay site guys believe he could bring a top tier staff, but they aren't naming any names. So here is a list of guys I would like Smart to contact if he's the HC.

OC - Doug Meacham - OC TCU (He's at about $450K right now.) or Major Applewhite - Houston ($400K)
WR - Billy Napier - Bama or Adam Henry - LSU (if Miles leaves) Gunter Brewer - UNC All near $300K
OL - Shawn Elliott or Jeff Sutherland (Eagles, former Bama guy)
TE/ Spec Team - Daric Riley - UAB Jason Washington - Houston both are near $100K
(I can't get on the Joe Rob train just yet, he hasn't recruited for shite except kickers.)
RB - Jay Graham FSU (also make him Recruiting Coordinator.) (again if Les leaves and Jimbo goes to LSU.) $320K or MARCUS LATTIMORE - he will graduate in January and be eligible.

DC - Don Brown - BC $500K, or Tom Orlando - Houston $400K or Jeremey Pruitt (he hates Richt. $800K, can recruit georgia well.)
LB - Ellis Johnson - Could make the introductions to current staff and the SC HS circuit.
or Kevin Sherrer -UGA (if Pruitt comes)
DB - Greg Brown or Terrell Buckley form Louisvillle 300
DL - Brad Lawing FSU (it's time to come home.)

I'd love to see us sweep in and take Applewhite from Herman ... but I seriously doubt that is going to happen unless Herman chooses to stay at Houston. This LSU thing just seems too logical to me personally.

I'd donate money to bringing Jay Graham back. But what if Marcus graduates this summer and is eligible to take an assistant position as RBs coach?

Ellis Johnson ... helllll nooooooo.

Shawn Elliott cannot stay - he's gotta go.

Brad Lawing probably cannot come home - for financial reasons. He's protected in Florida.

Special Teams ... keep Joe Rob.

You can mark Tom Orlando off your DC list. Smart will likely be hands-on with his defense, so more than likely it will be someone he considers on his own level, with close ties.

Marcus graduates in January I believe. He could immediately take a position after that formally, but he could also kind of let it be known that it was his to help with secruiting recruiting visits once it's official. IDK though, most everyone is a GA before they're ever a coach.

I've read that him and his wife have reconciled and now live together. If that's the case, she can't divorce him for cause when he gets back to SC, b/c as soon as the cohabitated again, that frees him of fault legally for past transgressions.

Our Spec Teams sucked every year he was here, except this year. He also isn't a good recruiter. We need the Spec Team guy to be one of the best recruiters on the team, IMO.

SC 247 reporting now that USC has NOT confirmed that Tom Herman removed himself from consideration. Meaning, he hasn't told them to officially remove him from consideration OR they don't want to acknowledge that he gone b/c they are still dealing with other candidates and want bargaining power.

SC 247 is making itself look like an arse. Basically, from this point on, everything is speculation and nothing can be confirmed.

Exactly, we're trying to figure out if these are known unknowns or unknown unknowns.
