I don't know who it was CG. Just told that it was someone from the FGF that they are familiar with for some reason.

Are you able to share any insight as of the baseball coach situation?
From what I've gleened from other places:
Kevin O'Sullivan from UF could be interested in us due to being disenchanted with lack of fan support in Gainsville. However, EVERY report from Gainsville says he isn't going anywhere.
Monte Lee at Clemmy has been said to be more open to talking that originally thought but he could also be that coach that goes through the motions just to get a raise where he's at.
Others mentioned were the coaches from Michigan and Wake Forest.
I just returned from Ann Arbor this morning. I feel that Bakich is the one.
I know of several other insider big donors who are pushing for Tom Walter.
I could be wrong because you just never know what Ray is thinking sometimes, but I would be shocked if it were either Sully or Monte. Those two are smoke screens IMHO.

I have my reservations about Sully. He's a fantastic coach, but with everything that he's had and how well he's done, he has yet to get the big one.
They've done ridiculously well in the postseason and then choke when it matters. With as huge of a price tag as Sully would have, I don't think it would be worth it. I'd be happy with the hire, of course. I just think for that much, we can do better. Even if they are a bit less "proven".

Could not agree more.
... and there are other reasons to have reservations about hiring O'Sullivan. Not to mention that there are some among us telling Ray that it is time to severe the UF-hand-me-downs link.
With that said Bakich is the truly great hire IF Tanner can pull it off. Bakich has not signed the extension with pay raise deal yet ... at least not the last I heard when we were south of Ann Arbor and passing through Toledo yesterday afternoon. That has to be interpreted as a good sign for us. He should be officially meeting with Tanner any day now - permission has already been received from U of M and there has already been talk with his agent.
Walter is the other excellent candidate and we can pull him from Wake Forest fairly easily and painlessly IMHO. I am
Sully and Lee are both smokescreens IMHO. I've been completely perplexed at the amount of talk in support of going-after Sully or Lee by the pundits and websites when I arrived home. Bakich is the smart hire, or Walter.

I agree on both smokesscreens. biggest plus of hiring either would be taking the coach from a school we need to beat annually. I'm not personally hung up on either, but wouldn't be against either.
along with CNB - I don't think Kevin O is worth what it would take and if he really wants the job for personal reasons - he can take a pay cut to come to Columbia. I honestly think Monte at CU is better for USC long term as Carolina can get a coach who can beat him - hell, Holbrook could easily be 4-2 against him. saw many of his games at Patriot's Point, and more than a few of his decisions in the dugout made Chad look like Ray. Andrew See has made Lee so far at CU...IMO
I read where Bakich called UM his 'destination' job during his acceptance presser a few years ago - had a feeling he would've been the one to use Carolina as leverage for a raise - I think he was making around $183K/yr from all I could find online. looks as though it won't matter now - per your link he's signed.
Walter has a longer track record of building programs by taking all 3 of his schools to regionals, especially New Orleans having to play 3rd fiddle to LSU & Tulane in that neck of the woods. Wake was legit this year, and the most impressive team in that league outside of Louisville & NoCar. he's approaching 20 years as a HC and just around 50 years old. he knows the recruiting landscape of the Carolinas, too.
good to see ya back posting and appreciate your insight.

Thanks 1801.
That's the one rub on Walter ... his age. They wanted someone in their mid 30s to 40s. But he's definitely got the resume.
This should get interesting in short order.
Watch it end-up being someone completely out of left field.
FWIW it must be getting close because they have clamped-down on the latest candidates. There are supposed to be two more possibilities on the list now ... two not mentioned anywhere. Time to start checking Flight Watch. It just does not sound like Sully, or Lee for that matter, are serious candidates although I was told tonight, and it made me cringe, that Monte is entertaining Ray's conversation. :::: sighhhhhhhhh ::::

I saw reports where he was not a real candidate. That Ray never even contacted him. If not true, Ray needs a lesson in how to sell/ be a closer. Not getting your man is embarrassing as hell.
Posted on 6/15/17 at 11:34 am to GameCocky88
I'm pretty sure Ray never actually spoke with him - but they had received permission to speak with him. He was definitely a real candidate - but he used the permission call to barter a better deal, good for him.
What I was told this morning was that his wife didn't like the schools down here and is not a fan of the South. So it's probably better that he didn't come in the long run.

I'd imagine that it would be hard to leave a place like Ann Arbor.

I honestly had no Idea Michigan or any Big Ten School had a baseball team.
I thought they just subbed it with Hockey.
How much is that guy making up there now?

idk exact figure but I think Sully is the only one being mentioned that would require a significant pay increase from what Holbrook was getting.

He just got a substantial bump into the $400k range to stay in Ann Arbor.

O'Sullivan wants $1.5 million a year including perks and incentives to come here, plus we have to pay his buyout on a contract that runs through 2025. Texas tried getting him before and they couldn't do it. He makes $1.2 million a year now ... highest paid coach in the league.

plus no state income tax in FL I believe. Thats a factor when we're talking 7 figs.

Lotta money for a non-rev sport.

Although, until these past two seasons, our baseball team actually showed a profit. Big TV revenue, apparel and equipment deals and sales and ticket sales along with concessions.
We're now one of only four or five college parks with a multi-million dollar sponsor.
We can afford anyone ... but it's asking too much for Sully. He needs to stay at UF IMHO.

With the recent sanctions coming down on louisville, can that possibly open the door for a shot at Dan McDonnell? From what I've seen, he's a super class act and who would want to share an athletic dept with petrino and pitino and all the bad press they bring reputation wise?

I understand people like saying "class act" and "morals"
But let's be honest here, a lot of that thrown out the door when Money is there.
