As we all know, we still have quite a lot of questions to answer with the team before the season starts - and most likely as the season progresses - but I have to say that so far I'm liking how the reports on the fall camp are going.

I really hope I don't jinx anything by posting this, but thus far for the most part I have heard/read nothing but largely positive if not glowing reports on the practices.

We've now gone through a third of fall camp - 5 of 15 practices were completed with the one tonight - and DC Ward has stated that he's already gotten in 85% of the defense. The youngsters at CB are all seemingly coming along very well (DJ Smith has been out of camp thus far after having wisdom tooth surgery, and Ali Groves has been dealing with a hamstring). The LBs have been strong, and Ward has commented that he feels we've got great depth along the D-line. The coaches practice the Oklahoma Drill tonight which was a rarity for Spurrier's practices, but by all reports the defensive coaching staff as well as the defensive players loved it, and Coach Ward stated the drill went great...

On the offensive side, backup QB Mitch has been showing improvement, which only helps the offense if we can have a back-up to Thompson that we feel can manage the offense in case Dylan gets hurt. The WRs have been having strong practices - Roland had a great practice tonight - while both Wilds and Williams have also had strong efforts thus far (Williams got dinged up tonight where the trainers had to help him off the field: he was walking fine shortly afterwards so I don't know if it was a leg issue or if he just got his bell rung), and as far as the TEs - Spurrier had praise for Adams earlier and there's also been good reports on Owens. Anderson - our #1 TE - hasn't even had a chance to participate yet...

Typically Spurrier has had some negative reviews or criticisms about a practice here or there in past fall camps as the team often struggles to maintain a consistent level of focus in the early weeks. But the only negative I've seen thus far was that the centers were a bit erratic with their shotgun snaps in the first practice or two, and now I've read that they seem to have ironed that out in the last 2-3 practices.

Again, I hate to put a curse on the team, but all these positive post-practice reviews are starting to get me a little giddy for the season....

My recommendation is, if you even think there's a chance before you post it, then don't post it.

I'm not superstitious so I think you're good.

How do centers make it to D1 and not be able to snap a good ball consistently??

Not all D1 lineman have played center before getting to college.

Right.

They're still a D1 athlete, though. They should be able to pick up a new motor skill with relative quickness. Besides, it's not like they don't know what needs to be done. A visual learner can easily pick up the motions.

Lastly, did our centers not play the position in high school?

Upvoted ... and I'm with you on this.

'Course, we'll not know for sure until that first game is over but I do like what we're hearing so far.

I had heard, and been posting here, all summer that this team had special chemistry. They seem to think it's there, enough so that they talked about it quite a bit in these first couple of weeks since SEC Media days. And if you've got good chemistry combined with talent and upperclass leadership (which I had also heard we were lacking to some degree last year with the exception of Shaw), then you've already won half the battle.

So this summer practice session is all about fine tuning ... and when you can go into summer drills just having to worry about fine tuning you're waaay ahead of the game.

While this true and I'm not arguing the thought process here, but step for a second into the centers shoes. He is essentially the QB of the OL, he has to look at the DL and LB and see there movements, there shifts etc.. then make any protection change or switch between himself and the rest of the OL then look between his legs at the QB to look up back up and get ready for the snap while taking a first step at or with a 275+ guy looking to shove his head backwards, all within a few seconds...

A simple motor function can get lost or placed on the back burner during all of this... so yes it does take a lil practice to get into rhythm and make this seemingly menial task a afterthought, but no matter how small a screw up in this area has great ramifications if it is not mastered.

I'm not arguing or being a smart arse at all about your post, but alot of these guys move around on the interior of the line and not always play center. So having a timing issue within yourself at practice and working it out is far far better than with a SEC nose guard looking to bang on you.

Pretty sure they both played guard. We've had a lot of success taking high school guards and moving them to center. This is why our centers have had some snapping issues early on. TJ Johnson had the same problem when he first moved to center, so I'm not concerned

Yeah, I get all of that. I don't know, a bad snap is one of the most frustrating mistakes to see, especially for a motion that should drilled into the center every practice so they're consistent.
