Home games in CAPS

Do our AD or HC get any say in any of this? Our schedule was a LSU level schedule fail this year.

Here are my gripes:
- Open the season away at Vandy.
- Another Thursday Opener. I don't care about Thursday Openers if they are shite matchups that nobody outside of fans of the two schools is going to watch. If this game is at 6 p.m. again...frick.
- 1 Home Game in our the first 4 games.
- A BYE week in Week 7...after we already played 5 SEC games.
- Opening the season with 2 SEC games (you know why everybody else likes to open with cupcakes?)
- A BYE week game before UMASS? Really?

and then when you look at the schedule of on our opponents, and see who they play the week before.
- Miss St plays South Alabama the week before.
- Kentucky plays New Mexico St the week before.
- aTm plays Arky the week before.
- uga plays tenn the week before. (although, that might benefit us the way they go after RB's.)
- tenn has a bye week the week before.
- mizz plays kent the week before.
- florida plays arky the week before.
We only got 1 game where the other team isn't playing a cupcake the week before, on the list above.

I guess if we have to start with 3 straight road SEC games, then Vandy, MSU, and UK are pretty much best-case scenario. But USC never gets any consideration from the SEC offices in terms of SEC scheduling: next season will be the 11th one in the past 14 seasons USC started SEC play on the road.

The mid-season bye before the UMASS game does seem odd - looks like it's not a bye week strategically placed before a big game, just a mid-season bye week stuck in the middle of the season.

The OOC schedule of ECU, UMASS, and Western Carolina looks more like a Missouri or Arkansas OOC schedule, but for next season that's OK with me: we'll most likely have a new coaching staff so no big deal having sort of a softer OOC schedule for the staff to ease their way into the SEC. Also playing TAMU and Miss St. means missing Bama, AU, LSU, even Ole Miss who seems to be gaining speed with Kelly and that defense settled in.

So overall a fairly softer schedule compared to many in the recent past (like this season), but maybe that'll be welcomed for our new head coach's era to kick off with a decent season as a result....

Really, the ADs at most programs have very little say-so. They are handed a conference schedule and told to fill the other dates with non-conf games basically.

There is some evidence to suggest that Tennessee and Bama have almost total control over their scheduling and it has been a point of contention by some of the other programs within the conference for two decades now.

Historically, since the first expansion, Auburn and South Carolina get screwed more than any others.

Someone needs to wreck the REC.

Question: Do OOC opponents ever contact schools they are interested in playing? I only ask bc there are a few of us in the SEC playing UMass next year. Seems too coincidental for all of us to decide to schedule them next year.

Umass is new to FBS Div 1, so they put their schedule together recently.

I think our schedule looks like this partially because we have been piecing it together, for our out of conference schedule, too late. We should be scheduling some cupcake games early in the season four to five years out.

They must be seriously fond of defeat and gluttons for punishment. If I were them, I'd have started with some ACC teams so that they would actually have a chance to win.

I absolutely agree. It's extremely frustrating that our team and coaching staff doesn't have time to test the water and work the kinks out before starting conference play.

I like to think that was because of Vandy, not us.

I don't have much of a problem with Thursday night games. Thursday night neutral games, however...

That's one of the weirdest schedules I've seen...almost a 2 month period where we don't play a road game..

If you have to play a Thursday night road game, might as well be to start the season, and can't be anywhere better than Vandy. Plus I kind of like opening on Thursday night, lets you watch all the other games during Saturday to see how teams are looking for the year.

Sept. 1 at Vanderbilt*
Sept. 10 at Mississippi State*
Sept. 17 EAST CAROLINA
Sept. 24 at Kentucky*

maybe USC can lobby B'ham to get Florida to swap their 9/17 game with North Texas with our 11/12 date in Gainesville so the Gamecocks can just go ahead and open 2016 with all 4 of our SEC road games.

this is the second time in 4 seasons USC will be forced to play 3 SEC road games in 4 weeks, this time to open a season. 2013 had an open date along with 3 consecutive SEC road games.

the only other school in the league with anything as remotely absurd is, drumroll, Vanderbilt. VU plays all 4 of their SEC road games in 6 weeks.

Oct. 8 at Kentucky
Oct. 15 at Georgia
Oct. 22 TENNESSEE STATE
Oct. 29 open date
Nov. 5 at Auburn
Nov. 12 at Missouri

To me, it's not about just being on Thursday, it's about it's an uninteresting matchup that will be the 6 p.m. game. There will be another more interesting game that they put on at 8 p.m.(primetime) on ESPN.

If we were opening the season on a Thursday against a Va Tech, or Penn St, or Texas, I would ok with it being on a Thursday to opening the season.

There is a system that is used throughout the NCAA, as part of their network, that the Assistant ADs refer to when putting together the potential OOC games before presenting them to the ADs for approval.

The system allows our schedule makers to go-in, look at all the OOC schools with similarly open dates on their schedule, and then they can start making calls.

It used to be a long drawn-out process. It was actually easier for us as an independent to put together a schedule than it is as a conference affiliated member for obvious reasons.

It was also easier when we were a less feared opponent, also for obvious reasons.

Of course back then most major independents agreed to play one another on a regular basis so we would sign long term scheduling deals that would help with scheduling far in advance.

These days modern technology helps with the process, but it's still a very fast moving process once conference schedules are released because you have to move quickly to get OOC games on the schedule ... and that involves negotiating payments for them to come play here in most cases as we rarely agree to home and home games with anyone other than Clemson and our old ACC rivals.

To me its more interesting than the jefferson pilot game of the week at noon on saturday...

I know jefferson pilot is extinct now, but you get my point.
