Our 2013 RBs ...

How do you see it playing-out this coming season?
The general consensus is that it is Mike Davis' job to lose. But Brandon Wilds is a better all-purpose back than most are willing to give him credit for IMHO.
Also, I would not be surprised to see Shon Carson make a statement this year. He's the most athletically gifted and talented of the bunch but he has certainly had his share of bad luck with the injuries.
Kendric Salley is a stud. I watched him his entire HS career and he is a big time RB. I'm anxious to see how he does in real-time at this level.
Both Jamari Smith and David Williams are interesting additions. Ideally, both should redshirt but realistically both will not. One will, the other will not. Williams was more highly rated, but Smith is not shabby by any stretch of the imagination. Both are big boys - Smith is a super all-purpose guy who we could set in motion or line-up at WR or he could just tote the seed from behind the QB. He was a steal imho.
David Williams will play this coming season IMHO. That's not a knock on what we have returning, and I do believe Mike Davis is going to be the main RB this coming season, but Williams is going to be tough to keep off the field.

I think Davis will get the call early and he'll get 60%+ of the carries, unless he gets hurt. Wilds will get the 2nd most carries. Salley will get virtually none and Williams and Smith will redshirt. Carson might get a few carries a game, but not all the time.
I'm sure though we won't know anything until fall camp. Who knows, Smith could come in and be so unbelievable that he ends up being the starter. I like that about our coaches, everybody gets a shot.

Yep: despite Coach Sands stating that Davis is the front-runner after spring to be our #1 back, he still maintained that the carries would be distributed along a 60-40 ratio between Davis and Wilds, so Brandon will have his opportunities to win the job should Mike falter.
It is encouraging however that we have the depth at RB. We have had excellent depth over the past 3 seasons as well, but at least the past 2 have been ravaged by injuries that left true freshmen in primary roles (in 2010 we were relatively healthy all season but freshman Lattimore just wouldn't relinquish the ball to either Maddox, Miles, or Giles). We will need to have much better health in 2013.
I really like the depth we have at RB: Davis is unquestionably a very talented back, and looks to be a very physical back that nonetheless likes to break runs to the outside around the edge. Wilds is the largest back on roster but is also one of the faster - he likes to run up the middle behind his pads similar to Lattimore's style.
Carson's body type is similar to Davis' - he's actually slightly shorter and slightly heavier per the official roster, but is known to be a burner who has been electronically clocked with sub-4.4 40 times while in HS. Doubtful he'll still be that fast but he should be one of the faster among the backs. Salley will be the smallest back of the lot - smaller than either of the incoming freshmen - but he put up monster numbers in high school with multiple 150-250 yd gms and 3-4 TD efforts.
Neither Wilds nor Salley got a whole lot of recruiting attention mostly because they weren't very active in the off-season going top camps or combines. Wilds only went to one camp at UK - and they offered him while there - and I don't think Salley even did that much. Wilds' HS had a poor offense his senior season and an almost non-existent OL, while Salley had explosive numbers in every game he played in but I think his HS was not a well-known powerhouse. I feel we got two gems here...
The incoming freshmen are also pretty talented: Williams will rival Wilds for being the tallest back and both are around 6-0, 200 lbs compared to the 5-8, 5-9 Davis, Carson, and Salley. Williams almost averaged 2,000 yds each of his last 2 seasons, and Smith had over 2,000 his jr. and over 1,600 his sr. year. Smith IMO despite being the AP 1st-team All-8A (the highest level) in FL in 2011 and 2nd-team in 2012, was rated lower than one might expect due to being almost an ATH as he was also highly regarded as a DB, and received offers from several FBS programs as a DB. Smith was also a very solid receiver in HS, and will bring solid athleticism to USC with a combination of power and speed...

I pretty much share everyone's opinion here with the exception that I am very big on Wilds' style at RB. He is the closet thing to the bruiser that was numbered 21 IMHO, that being said I think it will be a situational exchange similar to Shaw/Thompson, depending on if we need to pound that tough 3yards at the goal line or if we need to spread 'em out and open up the lanes. I Really want to see Carson get a chance to display his skills, but I think that will all depend his health and the productivity of the 2 gentlemen in front of him and of course whether or not they get in Spurrier's doghouse.

Conway, you bring up a great point about Smith. He's such an athlete he could end-up almost anywhere ... even DB.
Also, I'd like to add one thing about Salley that I know of personally. He's a super back. I've watched him since he was in the 7th grade. In the 8th grade, at the end of the season, he was moved-up to varsity. He returned kicks and punts in the 9th grade on the W-E varsity squad in addition to getting some carries. SC was already talking to him early in his sophomore year and he did camp at SC that year where he told them if they offered he would commit and not consider any future offers from anyone else. After his sophomore year he started receiving letters and calls from UNC, Clemson, UGA and Tennessee. SC offered him shortly after his Jr season began and he accepted immediately and was true to his word. He told everyone else who called or visited that he was solid with SC and thanks but no thanks.
I think that is the main reason his star status never increased, because he was quiet about everything and never got caught-up in all the recruiting hype.
Then he tore the ligament late in his senior season and basically settled in to rehab, quietly, while SC stuck with him and guided him through the surgery and rehap process.
He's got serious talent, but I have no idea how he has progressed since his arrival. I've asked, and been told he is going to be good and he'll get playing time this year on special teams. He's fearless, he's physical, he's just a good kid too - so I am really pulling for him. He super polite too. He was raised well. Studies hard, does what he is supposed to do and is always where he is supposed to be. He's just a solid kid.
