Joe Rizzo was drafed in the 2nd Rd, he'll sign, won't be a part of this recruiting class

SEC Fr of the Year Braden Webb was drafted in the 3rd by the Brewers, I think he's gone as well. (any of our guys who get drafted in the Top5 Rds will most likely leave.)

I don't follow college baseball at all but follow Pro Baseball.

Was something changed?

How is that possible? Thought you had to stay 3 years if you went to college.

Jr. Gene Cone also selected in 10th round by NY Mets. Would kinda like to see him return for his senior year however....

Really happy for Mooney. That's really solid $ (place to be drafted,) for a Sr who didn't have as much bargaining power.

Is Cone going to go though? I would think so, but I think he was really undervalued, he's still a Jr.

Here are the bonus payouts for the picks

an author on another site did a great job of explaining why guys who are drafted in the first 5-10 Rds nowadays are most likely going to sign the MLB contract.

quote:

-- Beginning in 2012, a hard slotting system was instituted that has impacted the draft and selection process for teams in several ways. Each pick in the top 10 rounds is assigned a draft slot value and all of that money is added together for a team’s total bonus pool eligible to be used on top 10 round picks.

If a team does not sign a pick in the top 10 rounds, they can not use the leftover bonus money from that pick on another selection. For example, if the Philadelphia Phillies do not sign the top overall pick, which is slotted to receive $9,015,000, they will lose that money from their pool of $13,405,200.

Teams can sign a player for less than the slot value of the particular pick and keep the savings in their bonus pool to spend on other players. They can also spend more money than the slot value without penalty if they have leftover money in their bonus pool.

-- Prior to 2012, teams could basically spend whatever they wanted to on picks regardless of round. Now, because of the way the bonus money is limited, if a player is selected in the first 10 rounds, the team fully expects to sign that player to a professional contract.

Carlos Cortez was a Perfect Game All American & Under Armor All American and projected #27 HS player for the draft. Many mock drafts had him going in the first 5 Rds.

He didn't get drafted in the Top5, so he's coming to SC!!!!

Ambidextrous hitter who's one of the best pure hitters in HS this year. Really an Elite Level Hitter. His fielding is OK, but it's his batting that made him a Top30 Overall player for Perfect Game. We'll put him at 2B or the Outfield.

I didn't think we would sign him, I thought he was going to be drafted, this is a BIG get for us.

That's a great addition to the team! We can always use another hot bat in the lineup.

Perhaps he already told the MLB teams interested in him that he wanted to play college ball, and that's why he was passed over in the first 10 rounds...

Recap of Gamecock Players/Recruits who were drafted:

Infield signee Joe Rizzo: Round 2, Pick No. 50 by Seattle Mariners - He gone, will sign, too much $ on the table, can't blame him one bit for signing.

Freshman pitcher Braden Webb: Round 3, Pick No. 82 by Milwaukee Brewers - Will sign, after a Fr All SEC year, and previous injuries, this might be his peak for getting drafted/$ bonus. Can't blame him for signing.

Junior outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams: Round 5, No. 158 by New York Yankees - He gone, really great place to be drafted with 1 year left of eligibility, Evil Empire $, it makes sense.

Junior outfielder Gene Cone: Round 10, Pick No. 310 by New York Mets - 90% sure He gone, surprised he ws drafted this late actually, should take that guaranteed $ in the 10th. He could have a similar year next year and be drafted later b/c of bargaining power.

Senior shortstop Marcus Mooney: Round 10, Pick No. 289 by Atlanta Braves - He gone, no more eligibility, and was drafted in a GREAT spot for 0 years eligibility left.

Junior pitcher Taylor Widener: Round 12, Pick No. 368 by New York Yankees - 80% sure he's gone. With Crowe coming back, Haire incoming, and Schmidt, Hill, Johnson and the other coming back.. I don't think he breaks into the weekend starting role, so this might be his best shot at the most $ in the draft.

Outfield signee Carlos Cortes: Round 20, Pick No. 610 by New York Mets - 80% sure he comes to SC. Unless the Mets work out deals to sign guys ahead of him well under their caps, to get him more $, I think he comes to SC. This is a big deal for hitting, he'll start Day1 at least as a DH, could play 2B or LF (replace Thompson-Williams.)

Junior pitcher Wil Crowe: Round 21, Pick No. 632 by Cleveland Indians - He's coming back, 99% lock to come back. Needs to show scouts he still has it after TJ Surgery. Will come back to weekend starter role.

Junior pitcher Matthew Vogel: Round 25, Pick No. 750 by Tampa Bay Rays - 90% sure he signs. His value has decreased as his appearances in our lineup have decreased. He was a great Gamecock, but he needs to get the $ while it's there.
