Patrick graduated in '14 and signed a UDFA deal with Dallas, but didn't make the 53 man final roster. He then was part of the Steelers practice squad team (which is a great living at $6K a week.)

So he and Byrd are both on the 90 man roster as it stands now. There will be a series of cuts b/w now and the Reg Season to get down to the 53 man roster. The Panthers OL is atrocious, Patrick has a shot. I've been reading some that people don't think Byrd is an NFL size WR.

Steve Smith was 5'9" 182 lbs when he arrived to work for the Panthers. Byrd arrived a 5'9" 172 lbs. Both guys had sub 4.4 speed, Byrd is actually faster though at this point in their development. Byrd weighs a little less, but he has more speed. I think the Panthers will dump Cotchery or another of the WR's to keep Byrd. Byrd won the Panthers Rookie Camp MVP Award.

Wow, not just among other UDFA, but of all rookies?

Impressive for Damiere. I don't like the Panthers, but I hope he does well.

Yes, Shaq and Funchess got hurt. Both came back though by the end of camp. Funchess looked bad his first day out, but had a better 2nd day. The QB's were jokingly trying to overthrow Byrd on deep routes but couldn't, that's what caught everyone's eye there. Funchess was not getting a lot of accurate passes day 1, but my theory on that is the QB's didn't expect him to be that slow. IMO, Funchess is classified as a slow WR or a undersized TE for the NFL.

Byrd, I got to know him during his four years here. He is a special young man that has overcome the odds and overachieved at every single thing he has done in life.

When he was picked-up by Charlotte I said he will be the surprise of this class, a total steal for the Panthers.

If not, some other team will be lucky to have him.

And when he leaves football and enters the private world of business ... some company will be fortunate to have him.

He is going to make a good Dad and family man to a good woman as well.

Byrd signed a 3 Yr Contract with the Panthers last week.

Most of these rookie udfa contracts are for only a year. This being a 3 year deal means the Panthers are pretty interested in him. He still has to work to earn a spot on that 53 man roster.

Ronald Patrick was also waived by the Panthers. I think he's going back to the Steeler's Practice Squad, which is actually a pretty good living.

Also, Quarles signed a 2 Yr Contract with the Colts, for about $1.1M.

He has to beat out Montori Hughes who is currently ahead of him on the depth chart, but financially Quarles makes sense over Hughes. (it's not drastically different financially, but they would save a little money by cutting Hughes before the season and continuing with Quarles.) It's really all going to come down to who has a better PreSeason camp. The Colts won't keep 3 DT's and 3 NT's on the roster, they'll keep 2 each.

I am happy for the Byrd Man .... and for the rest of those Gamecocks. We need more Gamecocks on more rosters.

A quick look at Panthers WR Damiere Byrd:

Height: 5-9.

Weight: 175.

College: South Carolina.

NFL experience: Rookie.

The scoop: The undrafted speedster hailing from Gamecocks Land could be the fastest player on the team if you believe his 4.25-second 40-yard dash from his pro day. Byrd is also one of the smallest players on the team, so coaches will be looking to see how he works against press coverage since everyone knows he can outrun a defender. If he can win off the press, win in a hand fight with a defensive back and show he can take a hit or two during the three-week camp, Byrd could earn a spot on the team’s practice squad.

Panthers WR, Stephen Hill, getting arrested today for weed is going to help Byrd's chances of making the final roster. They're going to test Hill now and he'll fail that drug test.

The Seahawks resigned former Gamecock, Lemuel Jeanpierre, and he's slated to be the starting C this year.

He went undrafted in '11, but has built a 5 year career with the Seahawks, won a Super Bowl and now is being paid and starting again. He started for them at Guard before as well. This kind of rings true to what Jamon Meredith was telling the kids at his Hillcrest Camp last week, it's important for OL to learn to play different positions.
