Couple 2018 notes.
4* DT Rick Sandidge, from Concord, NC and teammate of '17 4* ATH Hamsah Nasirdeen, visited again yesterday and had a great time. This was his 2nd visit in the past 5 weeks.
5* Xavier Thomas got off work last night and decided to come to Columbia, he'll be here today.
There may be 2 announcements today as well, so it will be interested around the football office.

Fingers crossed ... and this staff is just doing remarkable work on the recruiting trail for it to be this early.
I've never witnessed anything like this at Carolina. Joe Morrison's staff was probably the closest thing we've ever had to this before now ... a staff that seriously gets-after recruiting, especially this early, and will not take no for an answer.
From what I am hearing each coach has to spend an absolute minimum of two hours, every day, reviewing film on prospects. And they have to reach a consensus on each and every individual player before that prospect is presented to Muschamp for the final decision as to whether or not they will offer.
In other words, they take recruiting as seriously, as much a part of the game and their coaching responsibilities, as they do practice, coaching'em-up and game day preparations. No stone goes un-turned.
The ex-husband of one of my nieces is a big name among HS coaches in this state ... he's always favored Clemson and he's sent players to UGA, Clemson and SC over the years. He's retired now but still in touch with a lot of his old cohorts from all over the Southeast, especially the CSRA area, Charlotte area and all over South Carolina ... and he says this staff is catching everyone's eye. He told me yesterday, at the golf course, that if this staff can win some ballgames this year he expects us to pull down a Top Ten class before all is said and done. All the coaches are raving about how hard working this staff is on the recruiting trail.

Strong-side DE Tyreek Johnson, out of Sumter (Lakewood High) has also committed to USC. His commitment was expected for a few days if not weeks, and he visited USC this weekend. He's not rated yet by any of the services - perhaps he needed to show the coaches in person that he was Div 1 ready (6-4, 245).
LINK
edit: he is rated a 3* by Rivals - we should expect to see ratings for him by all services soon - he claims offers from USC, Duke, and Coastal Carolina:

So a pretty nice Saturday thus far, and it's only halfway through....

Eric Douglas seems to be pretty good, but the real value with him is it opens the door to Mallard Creek. He is already helping us recruit T.J. Jones a 4* OL and that HS will be pumping out solid recruits year after year.
Tyreek wasn't as heavily evaluated as some, but he isn't a bad pick. Like I told some this weekend, we had another DE named Alec Jackson who came last week and was offered by Bama shortly after his visit. Jackson's composite rating is a whopping 0.002 higher than Tyreek's. From what JC posted this morning, he thinks that Tyreek may develop into more of a inside guy anyway.
IMO, both of these moves were to get guys who are solid but will more importantly open the doors for us to get guys in the future. Our class this year will likely be between 25-30 guys. Getting some guys that could develop into studs and open doors for blue chips in the future is a smart play. I will say that for those looking for blue chips now, our stock crystal ball wise has risen considerably with Shi Smith, Brad Johnson, T.J. Moore and Javon Leake since signing Bentley.
It has also been said that our current commits have a group message going on between them regarding what targets they themselves can start helping to recruit and how to go about it. Things should get interesting from here.

Well ... ya never know. When we look back, it doesn't take long to start naming names of prospects who were not highly rated but turned-out to be really good players.
This staff does appear to have a plan though - so being proactive by bringing certain kids into the fold from certain programs does make sense.
Clemson has pretty much always used that strategy, for as long as I can remember ... at least back to the Charlie Pell, Danny Ford days.

Yeah JC over at 247 actually wrote an article about that this morning. Said there have been 13 players just from the state of SC, that went to USC, since the Lou Holtz days that have gone onto play in the NFL that were 3*s or less. That doesn't include the ones that went to Clemmy etc.

wow...speed, hot, nasty flat out speed. This guy can move. Great gliding cuts to and a continuous forward motion. He's really frickin fast. Good hands too, made a lot of nice catches. Wish they would have had some blocking highlights though.

Well, the secret is out.
https://www.hudl.com/athlete/4252344/tyreek-johnson
It's his first step, it's really explosive. He has that 10 yard quickness that you're looking for in a DL prospect. He also does well in the gym with the power clean, and that helps his swim technique to disengage from blockers. He wraps up and tackles low, takes the legs out. i don't think he made a lot of camps, but someone Coach Bentley knows got him tuned into Tryeek. He'll be a good one. I don't think he'll get some ratings jump to a high 4*, he doesn't really do the camp circuit, but he'll be productive when he gets here.

Tyreek is going to get offers though from a lot of coaches who watch his film or scout his games.
Johnson has been on the camp circuit, so he's had more exposure and a decent rating to show for it. He is a possible commitment for this weekend, but I don't think he's officially on commitment watch.
clemson is really focusing nationally this cycle and going for the highest rated prospects in the country. They're hoping that they'll be able to swoop in late on some of the instate kids, IF they miss on some of the national prospects they're going after. (Like Ortre Smith, he has on 'offer' from them, but it's not commitable at this point in time. He's a legacy to them, so they think they can swoop in late to get him if they want to.)

Apparently Tyreek's coach misinterpreted a text sent to him from a Clemson recruiter, I know another text message debacle after the NCAA. From what I read it insinuated that Tyreek has the ability for Clemson to offer him, he is just not as high on their board at the moment for them to pull the trigger.
