Oh well, he's suspended indefinitely, which doesn't surprise me. But he's also not enrolled in school right now, which tells me the chances of him being a part of the team this coming season is very slim....

He lost his scholarship up until second semester, and although the arrest record says 3rd degree, I am hearing that it may be more serious than that. Not because of what he did, but because of who he did it to.

Link to fb article about Felder's arrest and suspension

quote:

Well, crap.

Today, news broke that Rakym Felder has been suspended indefinitely from the University of South Carolina Basketball team, and will not enroll in classes this fall. According to court documents, he is being charged with misdemeanor assault and battery. Unfortunately, this is not his firstbrush with the law since joining the Gamecocks.

Frank Martin was quoted, saying that he, “will continue to help Rakym grow as a young man even though basketball is not part of our relationship right now.” Felder has also released a statement through his attorney, apologizing to the University and Gamecock fans.

For Felder, a Sophomore Point Guard seemingly tailor-made to fill, or perhaps overflow, the shoes of freshly-departed-for-the-NBA P.J. Dozier, you’re often subject to more public exposure over the stupid things you do in college. However, a trend of violent behavior is something to be taken very seriously and if there’s a person whose opinion I trust in the realm of character development; it’s Frank Martin.

The basketball implications of this are irrelevant: if he needs help, we hope that he receives the help he needs. If he needs discipline, we hope that he gets the discipline he needs. If he never plays another minute for the Gamecocks, we just hope he comes out of this a better person.

We needed him in a bad way. On a brighter note, a 5 star forward is heavily considering us. But we are up against some hefty competition for him.

I like the kid they got today from Maine.

Kid from BK who scored a little under 16 a game and plays the point.

Hopefully he steps in and performs.

Yeah, he looks promising. Who was the other transfer we got here just recently...he was also immediately eligible to play. Can't remember his name or where he was transferring from. There was another recruit that released his top 3 within this past week and we were one of the three. Frank is recruiting his arse off.

We have 2 Grad Transfers that are immediately able to play this year.

Wes Myers (Maine)
Frank Booker (FAU)

We also have Kory Holden from UD who isn't a grad transfer and had to sit out last year but is eligible to play this year.

I'm hearing it was an incident with his GF in 5P. She chose not to press further charges.

Damn it...I'ma be honest with y'all. If that had been me I would not have even reported it. Wouldn't have said a word to anyone. Why? Because I (whether right or wrong) put my school first and winning is important to me. Very important. I realize that's a screwed up attitude to have, but it is what it is.

His GF either a) doesn't give a shite about the gamecocks and is just along for the ride
Or B) someone else told/was a witness

After hearing more about the story, its sort of sad that something like that can ruin a career. The girl pressed charges, and then retracted, but only after they had appeared in court. Basically, Felder spit on a girl (gf or acquaintance, I have heard both), and she filed an assault charge stating that he also threatened her.

They show up for court and go thru the proceedings, and THEN she decides she doesn't want to press any further charges and drop the initial ones. I am not an attorney, so not sure how all of this works, but was all of that really necessary for getting spit on?

Of course, Felder was in the wrong and has problems with his temper, but to bring that into the courts is a little much to me. Suspend him, sure, but kicking him off the team at this point would be a little much to me.

I wish they would suspend him but still enroll for the fall semester.

That way he'd have access to the type of counseling he obviously needs.

But maybe he's still getting that in this deal. Who knows

Yep, it has been proven that UNC and Duke would NOT have kicked him off their team, if all it was, was the above. They wouldn't do it for worse either...

But there's more to the story. Felder spit on the girl at a bar in Five Points, and several guys who saw it came to her defense which started a brawl that Felder was part of. So its not all just for spitting....
