Frank Martin vastly exceeded expectation last year. I was just hoping to get more than 17 wins, Frank got 25 wins and we were completely cheated from an NCAAt bid. We were the 1st P5 Team with 25 wins to not make the NCAAt.

My expectations for this year are not that we get 25+ wins, b/c I think the loss of our 3 Sr big men (Chat, Kacinas and Carrera) will be too much to overcome the 25W mark. However, that's mainly b/c we lost Doby and Cobb who were going to be our big men this season to help Silva, and now we're going to need the Freshmen big men to step up. Frank can develop talent, but not overnight. We'll be depending on Guard play a lot this season. If Silva can stay out of foul trouble most of the year, we'll be ok, but if he fouls out, we'll be in trouble a lot of games.

My benchmark for success this season is 20 wins. Anything above that will be great, however if we get 18 or 19 I won't be that upset, b/c I know how 'not-great' this season is projected to be with so much youth.

I agree with everything. Anything over 20 wins will be a success.

What can help us is how weak the SEC is outside of Kentucky.

have a feeling this year's edition will have a hard time finish above .500 in SEC play and struggle to win 18. you mentioned the 3 SRs from last year being gone and that will have a huge impact.

looking forward to seeing Gravett and if his game translates from JUCO immediately. also Maik Kotsar is someone who could surprise by the time league play begins. he looks like he's starting to fill out his long 19 yr old frame.

here's a review from a little over a year ago about his skill set.

Notice is the only real deep ball threat. Thornwell is a warrior and leader who's body/health will hopefully allow him to shine his final year. Dozier needs to show he can make a 3-point shot and cut out the turnovers - I think he can. I'm not as inclined to believe Silva will stay out of foul trouble, but he'll need to play about 30 minutes/game if USC will have any presence underneath on the boards.

Gamecocks are gonna see a lot of zone defenses this year. rebounding will likely fall off from last year. hopefully USC will continue to get to the FT line at the same rate. overall, this season could end up a lot more like 2014-15 record-wise.

I like how Frank is over in Europe right now scouting talent. I feel like he's going to pull some more giants out of there the next 2 years. Our #1 International Business School is going to be really attractive to those players.

You can't deny that the #1 Int Business School angle will not be used in international recruiting.

It will be hard to replace the veteran experience from the departures of Carrera, Chatkevicius, and Kacinas. Also gone will be Stroman, who logged in big minutes as a reserve PG, and would have been an experienced player for us as well for 2016-17.

IMO the depth in the post will be as good if not improved, as far as height. We lose 6-5 Carrera, 6-6 Doby, 6-7 Kacinas, 6-9 Cobb, and 6-11 Chatkevicius, and replace them with 6-9 Keita, 6-9 Kotsar, 7-1 Gueye to be added to 6-9 Silva. Not as many big bodies, but Chat never liked to bang inside much anyways, and Kacinas - while more willing to battle against the bigs IMO, he just was out-matched athletically as well as physically. I think we'll have more true bigs that will also want to play like bigs starting next season, even if they will be green.

Having said all that, we lost so much experience and leadership in scoring and rebounding, and then so much depth from the dismissals, that IMO having a winning season next season would be a win to me. That's overall, not in the SEC. If we could muster around a 20-win season and upwards to a .500 SEC season, that would be fantastic....

That should be good enough to garner us another NIT appearance, I would think. Then I would want to start seeing some consistently better classes without the need for finding those unknown, miles under the radar type players. A SEC MBB program developing into a regular 20-win program that is making post-season tournaments should warrant that kind of better talent, and we'll need it if we want the program to truly take the next step under Coach Martin and his staff....

For basketball players?? LOL

Okay probably Walk-Ons.

Most these kids are steered towards more "Athletic" majors.

One where the course load isn't as rigorous so they can focus more on practice etc without falling behind.

They'll probably Major in SPTE, HRTM or Sociology.

Silva is a Business Major (I don't know if it's International or not though.) I think that we'll use the #1 Int Business Program as a recruiting tool for International players. Whether the guys qualify for it or not is going to be on them case by case.

I doubt he's International.

Probably something like Marketing or Mgmt.

I mean we are going to be using something as a tool to get players where the odds of them qualifying for it are pretty slim.

I'm fine with it as long as we get players, others I know are against that kind of tactic.
