How did they look? How do we match-up?

Looking forward to reading Cheese Grits' take on the game.

I know ULL made a late run at them.

I know they had a drone crash at the game.

Here's an interesting quick take on the game ...

I went through all the surveys and blocker ads so you don't have to ...

INSTANT ANALYSIS

Quick hits from Kentucky's 40-33 escape of Louisiana-Lafayette in Saturday night's season opener:

Offensive Player of the Game: Patrick Towles opened his second season as Kentucky's starting quarterback with a bang, throwing for 219 yards and two touchdowns before halftime. He struggled in the second half but delivered when the Cats needed it most, coming up with a key third-down strike that helped set up Mikel Horton's winning 12-yard touchdown rumble with 57 seconds to go. Towles finished 16-of-34 for 257 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Towles completed six passes longer than 25 yards before halftime.

Defensive Player of the Game: Junior cornerback J.D. Harmon, best known for getting called out by coach Mark Stoops for special teams mistakes in 2014, appears to be out of the dog house. He thwarted a long Ragin' Cajuns drive in the first quarter by stripping the ball from a wide receiver at UK's 10-yard line. Harmon then turned away another ULL scoring attempt with a leaping interception at the Cats' 19 just before halftime. For good measure, he also returned a kickoff 62 yards in the second half.

Where the Game Turned: Kentucky held the momentum literally from the first offensive play, when sophomore star Stanley "Boom" Williams raced 75 yards up the middle for a TD. His breakaway speed – flashed as a freshman when he had three scores of 50-plus yards – was impressive. But true freshman tight end C.J. Conrad's key block, driving back ULL star linebacker Otha Peters (an Arkansas transfer), is perhaps even more encouraging for the Cats.

Key Stat: More than a dozen true and redshirt freshmen played Saturday night for UK and it showed, especially on defense. Stoops could frequently be seen screaming at several of the young linebackers on the sideline. While the Cats have dramatically upgraded their talent, they're still relying on so much youth that there are bound to be some growing pains.

What Went Right: The Cats piled up 303 yards in the first half of offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson's debut. He clearly plans to let the Air Raid fly, dialing up nearly a dozen deep passes before halftime. It helps that all of the projected playmakers actually were on Saturday. In addition to Williams' long run, Towles completed passes of 25-plus to five different receivers: junior Ryan Timmons and sophomores Jeff Badet, Dorian Baker, Blake Bone and Garrett Johnson. Runs of 75 and 38 yards from Williams, 32 yards by junior Jojo Kemp and then winning touchdown by Horton, a sophomore who ran over a defender to score, were also encouraging.

What Went Wrong: Kentucky's defense looks seriously shaky. On three consecutive first-half possessions, the Cajuns strung together drives of 10 plays, 12 plays and 13 plays – totaling 185 yards – all of which ended deep in the Cats' end of the field. UK was fortunate to get out of those messes with just seven points allowed, but the dam broke in the second half. ULL scored 23 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and finished with 479 total yards. The Wildcats were gashed over and over for big plays, both missing tackles and looking out of position. The defensive-minded Stoops will not be pleased and SEC offenses are surely licking their chops.

This is good news. We're going to be their first ever away game.

I watched both games and I have no idea how this will play out. Best situation for UK was Cocks beating Heels badly and flying under the radar. Worst situation for UK would have been a Cock loss and Spurrier fired up for the angry "run up the score" follow up game.

UK's running and passing looks better but it is still not there yet. Cocks are at home with a night game and the extra days to work out their kinks. I do think Spurrier has mellowed in his anti UK anger for getting passed over for the job Bill Curry got at UK. Mellowed like a rusty pistol that is.

While I do think UK will bite a team or two this season, not sure it will be the Cocks. I am thinking Auburn, Missouri, or Florida and a question mark for Tennessee getting moved to Breeders Cup / Halloween weekend. Usually whoever gets that weekend gets upset. Maybe it is the ghost of bear or too much bourbon from the folks coming to town but mainly it might be the weather shift rolling into November.

I read your link about the youth of UK and view it 2 ways. Inexperience can be the issue that means mistakes your opponent cashes in on. The second way is with youth you can get bulletproof because you just do not know better. Kids today with short memories may not fear a Florida Spurrier like older folks might. Like or hate Joker, he did show Tennessee and Spurrier could be beaten. Stoops had a lesser team beating Spurrier last year, does that work on the road this year?

UK's defense is suspect. We SHOULD be able to score on them but then again.. We could look like we did against UNC on offense again.

The bad news is that UKs offense looked pretty good. Towles did well getting the ball to their WRs and running backs. They have a really good receiver from SC, Blake Bone, who I'm sure is itching to play his home state school.

UK wants to take SC's place in the SEC East hierarchy so this is a game they take very seriously. It's time we start treating this game the same.

oh boy...

Towles is way better than the goats QB we faced in Charlotte.

I expect to see the same thing Sat in W-B.

I didn't see the game - but that's hard to believe. Hudspeth has been successful in Lafayette and even at little North Alabama, so the Cajuns know how to compete and win.

Gamecocks will need to be very good on 3rd down (7 for 15 vs NC) against UK and again avoid the huge turnovers and big plays for scores. defense will need to get Towles out of the pocket and on the ground as much as possible.

Wilds/Williams/Carson give Carolina the best chance to win. Williams-Brice will need to be in its usual full voice when Carolina's on D, and maybe more importantly - to encourage the Gamecock offense if it struggles.

Got it on in the office. Their RB went for 75 yards and a TD on the first play from scrimmage.

Now that I think about it, we have had some major battles with UK (especially in Lexington) lately. 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2014 come to mind.
