https://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/dennis-dodd/25338166/kirby-smart-leads-list-of-10-candidates-to-replace-spurrier-at-south-carolina

In no particular order …

Kirby Smart, Alabama defensive coordinator: For those of you assuming Smart will slide over when Nick Saban retires, consider that Saban, who turns 64 on Halloween, is energized enough to go until he's 70. Smart, only 39, goes to his starter job at South Carolina and returns the conquering hero to Tuscaloosa -- with head coaching experience!

Justin Fuente, Memphis coach: By now, Memphis athletic director Tom Bowen has to realize his coach is a short-timer. With so many jobs open, Fuente -- in his fourth season -- will get a serious look from several schools.

Fuente, who has the same age as Smart, has taken a program that barely mattered to arguably brink of the biggest game in its history this week against Ole Miss. The former Oklahoma quarterback is a total program builder. If one USC (Southern Cal) doesn't snatch him up, another may.

Dino Babers, Bowling Green coach: The Falcons simply have the most entertaining offense in football this side of Baylor. Babers may have his choice of jobs (Maryland? Illinois?) after this season. The Art Briles disciple has the top non-BCS offense in the country (No. 4 overall). Get him a bright, young defensive coordinator -- because that matters in the SEC -- and the Gamecocks would definitely entertain.

Tom Herman, Houston coach: Maybe a long shot -- maybe -- considering this is the former Ohio State offensive coordinator's first year as head coach. We also had him on the list at Southern Cal.

Jeff Brohm, Western Kentucky coach: The former Louisville quarterback has been solid in his second year with the Hilltoppers (13-6 overall). Brohm played for Howard Schnellenberger and coached for Bobby Petrino. Western Kentucky remains in the discussion for a New Year's Six bowl. Can you imagine how hot Brohm would be coming to South Carolina after a Fiesta Bowl appearance?

Will Muschamp, Auburn defensive coordinator: You can look at this two ways … Muschamp laid the foundation for what is happening at Florida under Jim McElwain. Or it would be hard for him to get the South Carolina job with Auburn being (arguably) the biggest disappointment of the season? Actually, both are in play. Muschamp wants to be a head coach again. It's probably too soon at South Carolina at the moment.

Lane Kiffin, Alabama offensive coordinator: Considering recent events at USC, Kiffin was a stable guiding force by comparison. If Bama keeps winning, Kiffin will have a chance to be a head coach again. Stranger things have happened this week than Kiffin returning to the SEC as a head coach.

Chad Morris, SMU coach: If he wasn't halfway through his first season at SMU, Morris would be the perfect pick. If nothing else, he knows the inner workings of Clemson. Can you imagine the Rick Pitino Kentucky/Louisville atomic fallout if Morris went to South Carolina? Still, too early.

I'd rather hire Obama than Muschamp or Kiffin.

I kinda like Fuente, honestly.

The winner of the Memphis vs Houston game is going to have a leg up. It's basically like the playoffs. Morris was eliminated when he lost to Houston.

Kirby Smart rumors and speculation are picking up a lot of steam. If he can bring Napier and Cochran, that would be huge. Also if there's a chance he could bring Tosh and Bo Davis as well, the defensive recruiting would be off the charts. He will need to bring in a Top OC candidate to help him though, like Doug Meachm from TCU, that would be unreal. However, maybe Mangus and Elliot can stay. Elliott could stay as OL Coach and Mangus could be the TE Coach/Co Recruiting Coordinator, along with Tosh. Napier would make a good Rec Coor too though.

Smart, Kiffin, and Muschamp don't scare me. The others do.

I think the immediate game to watch is this weekend's Ole Miss at Memphis game. See how Fuente does against the Rebs.

Yep. Definitely going to be paying close, close attention to that game.

Hope they slaughter Swag Kelly and company.

If Fuente somehow wins that game, he shoots up to the Top 3.

Smart, Cochran, Napier, Elliott, Mangus, and bringing back Beamer, and adding Tee Martin is something like my dream team.

I think one of the reasons I'm slowly turning over to Smart is because I think he would forge a tough, hard team-especially if he brings Cochran. The backbone of the 33-6 teams was nasty, violent, hard defense. That's Carolina football. Smart may very well be the guy to bring it back...
