ep, the news was moving towards him wanting to stay close to home, so I didn't get my hopes up. Hope well for the kid....

Agreed, that's all I heard to pretty much was that he just wanted to stay close to home. Can't blame him for that.

Recruiting

quote:

-- Tevin Mack was impressed with head coach Frank Martin in a recent visit to campus, despite the fact that he wasn’t offered at the time. While Martin wants to continue to watch Mack play, he also wants to continue to build a relationship with the four-star player before putting an offer on the table.

We’re told that VCU is pushing really hard to get Mack to shut down his recruitment and commit to the Rams but that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen. Wake Forest also recently offered and are trying to push hard for him at the moment after his big showing in Pittsburgh, Pa. two weeks ago. The feeling is that Mack wants to go to South Carolina and is not upset about the lack of an offer at this point.

-- South Carolina has gotten into the mix with former 247Sports Composite five-star guard Danuel House, who is transferring from Houston after a coaching change during the offseason. House was the Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2012-13 and has two more years of eligibility remaining to play. We are still working to get a full interview with House but we have been able to confirm his interest in the Gamecocks and that he will visit the school for the first time this week.

House isn’t in a real rush to make a decision and he plans to visit UCLA next week. He has mentioned taking other visits as well but the Carolina and UCLA are the two most important to him at this point.

-- South Carolina native and four-star point guard Juwan Evans (Dallas, Texas/Kimball) came back this weekend to the east coast and played with his SC Raptors team and helped to win the Bob Gibbons Tournament in Atlanta, Ga. Evans went to Southside High School in Greenville but left for Texas last summer. Both South Carolina and Clemson were involved with him at the time but we understand that Evans has taken a liking to his new home and has gotten comfortable out there.

Ranked as the No. 73 player in the country in the 247Sports Composite, the 6-foot guard will likely find his home in the Big 12 with Oklahoma State, Baylor and Oklahoma showing the most interest. Cincinnati and Kansas have also been by to check him out recently.

Recruiting

quote:

-- Obviously the biggest story in South Carolina basketball recruiting right now is that of Houston transfer Danuel House. He visited from Thursday to Saturday and we, unfortunately, have not been able to get him on the phone. We understand that others have and he’s made very positive comments as it relates to his visit. Getting House on the phone is No. 1 on our priority list as a site, regardless of sport and story. Please know we’re not ignoring the story.

From what we can gather from people around the program, the staff felt the visit went pretty well. It was House’s first visit and he currently has other trips set up for UCLA this week and UNLV later this month. The current plan is for the 6-foot-7 guard to take all of his visits. He played things close to the vest on his visit and is trying to keep an open mind until he takes his trips. House doesn’t seem to be in a rush to make a decision.

-- Head coach Frank Martin spent time in both Pittsburgh, Pa. and Biloxi, Miss. a couple weekends back checking out some of the top players in the 2015 and 2016 classes. Two of the major players he watched were targets Perry Dozier Jr. (Columbia/Spring Valley) and Seventh Woods (Columbia/Hammond). South Carolina and North Carolina comprise the top two schools for both players, so we reached out to someone with intimate knowledge of North Carolina’s recruiting, who has a little bit different perspective than what we’ve heard lately.

The word out of the North Carolina camp is the Tar Heels feel like they have a great shot to land Dozier, a 2015 wing, if and when they decide he’s the player they want. We’ve been told that Dozier has given the Tar Heels reasons to feel good but he’s not UNC’s top priority at this point. Wisdom from the USC side of things is that the Gamecocks feel good about their position with Dozier.

With Woods, many figure that UNC is the lead school while USC trails. Williams and the Tar Heels certainly want Woods and there’s no slow-playing going on from their side with the 2016 guard. Word from the North Carolina side is that they feel good about they’re position, but they don’t feel like they’re the leaders for Woods at this point. If UNC doesn’t lead, it’s USC on top. Regardless of who leads right now, there’s a long way to go in Woods’ recruitment.

Georgia Tech transfer Robert Carter Jr. will make an official visit to USC Saturday and Sunday, Carter's AAU coach Winfred Jordan tells Sports Talk Radio Network's Phil Kornblut.
“A couple of years ago Robert had an opportunity to try out for the USA Junior National Team and that’s where he and Martin created a relationship,” explained Carter’s AAU coach Winfred Jordan who has been assisting him with this move. “As he sat down with his list of schools, South Carolina was also in in his top five. He’s gotten calls from all over the country. He loves Frank Martin and thinks he can prepare him for the next level.”

Sheppard & Thompson Offically Sign with SC

quote:

"With the addition of Shamiek [Sheppard] and James [Thompson], combined with Marcus [Stroman] and TeMarcus [Blanton], I'm once again extremely excited about the job our staff has done in identifying the right people and the right kind of players as we continue to build our program," Martin said with the additional spring signees.

quote:

Martin on Sheppard:
"Shamiek Sheppard is a strong, athletic guard, that we like to call a power guard, who can be a high-volume rebounder and slasher. He plays with an unbelievable amount of toughness and strength, and he should be a tremendous addition to our depth at the guard position. He gives us a different dimension than what we've had."

quote:

Martin on Thompson:
"James Thompson is a 6-9, long, athletic, rebounding shot-blocker, that we feel is going to be a great addition to our front line. He brings the ability to block shots, and that is something added to things that we were missing on last year's team."

24/7 Bolt

quote:

South Carolina basketball signee James Thompson was arrested earlier this week and booked in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of aggravated battery and domestic abuse by battery, according to The Times Picayune.

Thompson's arrest came after the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office was contacted regarding a pair of alleged incidents that allegedly resulted from arguments about the complainant's Instagram account, according to the arrest report.

Thompson, a 6-foot-8, 205-pounder who starred at Capitol Pre-college Academy For Boys in Baton Rouge, La., has a rating of 0.8734 in the industry generated 247Sports Composite and was ranked the No. 46 PF in the country.

Class of 2015 forward Jarred Reuter (Brewster, Mass./Brewster) has picked up a South Carolina offer and is drawing interest from several schools in the Big 10 and Big East. His high school coach, Jason Smith, has confirmed that Reuter is interested in the Gamecocks. The 6-foot-8 forward will narrow his list of schools sometime in July.

Damn. That sucks. Wish the kid a fast and full recovery.

Any more word on those charges on Thompson? Will that affect his ability to come in under Martin if he's convicted/pleads guilty?

Got a weird feeling that this year is really going to give a glimpse of what to expect under Martin. He can make anyone's night a living hell.

I haven't heard anything new, but I really doubt he makes it to campus, especially if he's convicted or pleads guilty.

It could definitely show a step in the right direction, the end of the 2013-14 season was very encouraging, going 4-2 in our final 6 games. Really showed that we were moving in the right direction, hopefully this can carry over into this year.

Many Gamecock Targets Impress

One of South Carolina's top targets, Perry Dozier Jr., was a star of the NBPATop100 camp and the performance caused him to receive a significant bump in the rankings. He is now ranked as the 18th overall prospect in the 2015 class and the 2nd best point guard.

Dozier has long been thought to favor either South Carolina or North Carolina, but is still working on setting up other visits, including Georgetown.

Class of 2015 point guard Kwe Parker (Wade, NC/Wesleyan Christian) is receiving interest from Frank Martin and staff, but has yet to receive an offer. He is also being recruited heavily by Virginia Tech, Miami, Clemson, Tennessee, and Rutgers among others.

Jerry Meyer reports that South Carolina is recruiting 2017 center Zach Brown (Miami, Fla./Miami Beach Senior) the hardest. At the Scouts Focus All American camp, Brown displayed an incredible combination of athleticism and using his size well.

Class of 2016 forward Dewan Huell (Miami, Fla./Norland) is another Miami product who shined at the NBPATop100 camp. Huell is rated as the 22nd best prospect in the 2016 class and lists South Carolina as one of the schools he is hearing from the most, which also includes Kansas, Louisville, Miami, Florida, Florida State, and Tennessee.

Don't mean to clutter up your recruiting thread, but wanted to pass this along. Truly am a fan of Martin.

The Gamecock coach said he’s “tired of this fallacy and myth that our league’s no good.”

“I think it’s disrespectful to the coaches in this league,” Martin said. “I think anytime you try to convince (Florida coach) Billy (Donovan), (Kentucky coach John Calipari), (Arkansas coach) Mike Anderson, guys that have tremendous success everywhere they’ve been, (Auburn coach) Bruce Pearl, now that he’s back in the league, (Texas A&M coach) Billy Kennedy the success he’s had, just keep going on down the line; the successes that they’ve had in their careers and trying to say that their success right now is not very good because our league’s not very good. I think that’s a little disrespectful and untrue.”

Freshman Shamiek Sheppard suffered a torn ACL during practice and will have surgery this week.

quote:

"We feel awful for Shamiek with his injury," Martin said. "He has worked so hard to put himself in position to play at South Carolina. We look forward to supporting him through his surgery and rehab this season."

-- The Gamecocks have been recruiting 2015 wing Jacob Evans (Baton Rouge, LA/St. Michael The Archangel) for a while now and more schools are jumping in. Oklahoma State, Memphis, Alabama, South Carolina, Houston, Tulane, UAB, LSU, Louisana-Lafayette and others have all offered. Evans, however, isn't in any hurry to make a decision. He hasn't started to narrow his list of schools, let alone name a favorite.

-- Head coach Frank Martin has spent some time in Philadelphia this weekend checking in on 2015 post player Jarred Reuter (Wolfboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) (his profile page is temporarily down). Reuter has played very well in the Breakout Classic registering a couple of double-digit scoring games with Martin on hand. Most feel like Reuter will go with a Big 10 or Big East school but he is interested in South Carolina.

-- Jacob Evans (Baton Rouge, La./St. Michael The Archangel) led his team all the way to the championship game of the Fab 48 Las Vegas AAU Tournament, including a win over PJ Dozier's Upward Stars in the semi-finals. Evans was tremendous throughout the tournament and picked up a couple new SEC offers during the process. Auburn and Mississippi State have now offered the talented class of 2015 wing prospect as Evans' days of flying under the radar appear to be over. South Carolina were one of the first to offer in the Spring. Evans is likely viewed a backup plan in case the staff doesn't get PJ Dozier.

-- Class of 2015 Center prospect Nicklaus Marshall (Lexington, Tenn./Lexington) received several high profile offers last week. Marshall already claimed offers from several SEC schools but can now add Florida and Alabama to the list as well as Indiana.
