After the way we ended last season I think we're heading in the right direction, and honestly I'm pretty excited for this season.

I think Martin has done a good job recruiting but the knock has been a lack of big men. Now hes landed one and Chatkevicius really started to play well at the end of last year

I sort of feel the same way.

Gosh it would be nice if we could start making the dance on a regular basis.

The McGuire days were something special. Y'all would not believe how intimidating it was for visiting teams at The Frank back in the day.

I hope The Colonial Center goes crazy for basketball soon.

I didn't realize how large it is compared to other arenas in college basketball. Saw a list last year and its top 10 or 15 in terms of capacity.

I was really encouraged by the end of the last season, pretty excited to see this team this upcoming year. Think they could potentially make a splash in the SEC.

Yeah, it was definitely designed as a 21st century venue. Built to host concerts, NCAA tournament games, and similar events rather than a basketball venue that just so happened to host them.

The Colonial Center can get loud and has in the past, problem has been we haven't fielded a whole lot of teams worth getting excited about since it's been built.

scrooster: I went to Eddie Fogler basketball camp, met BJ McKie and Antonio Grant as a youngster, got to play on the Coliseum court. I would love for Carolina to play games in there again. Last time I was there was for someone's graduation and I missed it. You could tell how "on top of the court" the fans were.

Yep, the CLA was widely regarded as a state of the art arena when it first opened up. But having a large-capacity basketball arena is not new for USC: the Carolina Coliseum was one of the largest-capacity BB arenas in the region when it first opened up. UNC's Carmichael Arena was smaller (8K+ capacity) than CC's 12K capacity...

When Carolina Coliseum was being built it was discovered that it was going to be the same size, capacity wise, as NC State's place.

Coach McGuire hated NC State, so he insisted they squeeze another 250 seats in Carolina Coliseum in order to outdo NC St.

We had a bigger basketball rivalry with NC State during the McGuire years than with any other ACC team.

What scared the ACC about us was that we were spending bigger than all the other schools, in all sports, in the ACC. Thus, we were out recruiting everyone from 68-71 ... in all sports.

We had the finest facilities in the conference we we left ... now, think about that.

Twenty years later when we joined the SEC ...

-- South Carolina target Jacob Evans (Baton Rouge, La./St Michael the Archangel) took a visit to Cincinnati this weekend and had a great time. After visiting South Carolina last weekend, Evans welcomed Auburn for an in-home visit last Tuesday and then went to see the Bearcats this weekend. Cincinnati has one spot left open for a guard and they have made it clear they want Evans. The Gamecocks like Evans a lot, but are unsure if they will have room for him with signing a big man being a priority and still being in on Dozier. Evans does not plan to make his decision until the spring.

4* SF, Tevin Mack

Song about Mack and his return

quote:

6-5 Tevin Mack of Dreher was back at USC Tuesday for an unofficial visit. Mack made his first official visit over the weekend to Georgia and got the chance to take a closer look at the Bulldog program under Mark Fox. He toured the campus and spent a lot of time with the players.

“They showed me some film on the wings, especially Caldwell Pope and how they used him, and I kind of got a feel for how I’d be able to play.” Mack’s mother went with him on the visit.

This weekend he goes to VCU followed by Clemson the following weekend. Connecticut is a recent offer for Mack and he might take a visit there, and he is scheduled to visit USC October 17th.

Clemson was down last week to watch him work out and showed him film on their wings like KJ McDaniels. USC also was in last week and they also showed him film of one of Frank Martin’s players at Kansas State. VCU coach Shaka Smart has also been in for his visit and Connecticut coach Kevin Ollie is scheduled to meet with him Wednesday.

Mack said there is no favorite and he plans to sign in November.

Nix cuts it to 3

quote:

Junior college big man Rozelle Nix has narrowed his college choices down to three schools and has moved his decision timeframe up. Nix, who visited South Carolina officially the last weekend in September, will visit Pittsburgh the last weekend in October and then choose between the Gamecocks, Panthers and Loyola Marymount.

I think those are the top 3 guys we're going after for this class, would be one hell of a class if CFM can pull it off.

Class of 2015 four-star wing Tevin Mack (Columbia/Dreher) has finished taking his official visits and will make an announcement soon, possibly as early as tonight. Mack visited Georgia, Clemson, VCU, Connecticut, and most recently South Carolina and will decide between those schools.

South Carolina offered Mack in August and immediately entered his top 5 schools. Mack is rated as the No. 67 player in the nation and the No. 12 small forward in the class of 2015 by the 247Sports Composite rankings.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball currently shows 57 percent in favor of Georgia, 29 percent in favor of UCONN, and 7 percent in favor of South Carolina. However, the last four predictions have all been in favor of the Huskies.

Sounds like a huge get if we can land him, think he'll wait to see how the season shakes out to see if the program is indeed headed on an upward trend?

Also, ye need a new sig.

Everything I've heard is that he's going to commit very soon, apparently really enjoyed his visit. We're definitely on an upward trend with him as far as his recruitment goes.

Hope so. I don't follow recruiting enough to know how accurate those predictions are but it looks like we were pretty far behind initially, hopefully that'll shift.

Basketball Info on his visit and where we stand from 247's Chris Hillyard

quote:

The South Carolina visit went very well and as far as I can tell the staff pushed all the right buttons. It was no secret that at the end of the summer Mack was intrigued that Carolina hadn't offered. But the staff has been honest with him the entire way and have been upfront with him. For him to get to see the nuts and bolts of the program and hear what the staff is trying to do first hand was huge.

South Carolina has done all they can at this point. They have been selling Mack on the idea of building an elite program with homegrown talent, similar to how the football team built their success. To do that, the staff needs Mack and PJ Dozier. It's a good sell. Each time we have talked to Mack, even before Carolina offered, he mentioned that playing for the local school definitely has its appeal. The fact that he is announcing he will commit right after he left Carolina could be a good sign for the Gamecocks.

This, I think is a fundamental of all college sports. Maybe it's obvious, maybe it's not. But I think that if you're a building program keeping at least some of the best talent in-state is the biggest key. If you can't get them, what hopes do you have of pulling one of the best from elsewhere? Even if you become an elite program with national reach, at that point you should be able to pick and choose which in-state talent you want and then go elsewhere.

Lattimore, Clowney, Jeffrey. Wilson now for WBB. etc.

Nix set to take official visit to Pitt over Weekend

quote:

Class of 2015 center prospect Rozelle Nix (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola State) is set to take an official visit to Pittsburgh this weekend. Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon visited Nix this afternoon as well.

The seven-footer took an official visit to South Carolina on September 27th and recently named a top three of South Carolina, Loyola Marymount and Pittsburgh. He will decide between those schools in early November.South Carolina was the first to offer him and he began gaining heavy interest thanks to his dramatic weight loss. Nix has reportedly lost more than 60 pounds since arriving at Pensacola State and will look to improve his conditioning throughout the season.

Nix is rated as an 83 by 247Sports.
