Two of the top programs in college baseball are set to face off in Charlotte each of the next two years.

South Carolina and North Carolina will play at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 and again in 2017, it was announced Wednesday night. Game time for the 2016 matchup is 7 p.m.

I'm all for playing UNC, in any sport. Good or bad, I enjoy the ole rivalry and I'm glad to see them on the regular season baseball schedule.

My only gripe: Must we play every damn NC school in Charlotte these days? I'm sure it's a great park. But our stadium is still new and didn't UNC just renovate theirs a few years ago? If we're doing 2 years in a row I would have preferred a home and home.

Still a great move though.

I think Holbrook is going to run train this year. Our talent is ridiculous, we've had 3 consecutive years of Top10 classes.. If he can't win big this year (at least a Super Regional appearance) than he is not the right guy for this job. This is the make it or break it season, IMO, for Holbrook.

I agree, no excuses for Holbrook this year. Super Regionals or bust.

With regard to playing in Charlotte, it's win-win for us. There are just as many Gamecocks in ear shot of Charlotte as there are tarholios. The more we have a presence in Charlotte in all sports, the more exposure we have up there, the better it is for us in all sports when it comes to recruiting. And Charlotte is fast becoming a big city hot bed for talent in all sports. We need to make it our second home in some respects, for a lot of reasons. Exposure, talent/recruits, big money sponsors who may buy in to our brand, and to grow our fanbase among those that are looking for a SEC team to support. Additionally, it's a very convenient and easy appeasement to ESPN, the fricktard bastards that they are, (see Tony Kornheiser), for ESPN to do some big game coverage right in their own backyard - now that they have the SEC Network home offices up there. And, in that regard, we truly will be the benefactors of a show of favoritism.

Agreed. Charlotte must become a priority in all sports. There's nothing to lose from USC's perspective in creating more opportunities for exposure there. Playing the NC schools- and, more importantly, winning- does two things simultaneously. It allows USC to grow its regional brand, while weakening that of UNC and NC State.

You know ... that brings up another question. I'm trying to remember, what would our overall record be, all sports played in Charlotte, as far back as anyone can remember?

Are we undefeated up there, 3-0 is it, in football?

Baseball?

Basketball? I think we lost a game to UNCC up there if I remember correctly?

Demetra said we played UNCC in 1994 up there, but didn't say whether we won or lost.

The venue that we are playing this game is awesome. I went to several Knights games there when I lived near Charlotte.

I'm afraid we have some pre-WW1 losses up there.

And I understand the reasoning and the benefits of playing in Charlotte. I just personally prefer home and homes. I enjoy watching and attending SC games at an away atmosphere more than I do watching them at a neutral site.

Oh crap! Why the heck did it take us so long to get serious about football!

I used to like going to the RTP for games. Went to many up there, UNC, NC State, Duke. Been to a couple at ECU. Used to always make it a point to visit friends in Wilmington and at Bragg and in Mebane, etc. My oldest daughter is actually a UNC grad, J school ... where they turned her into a liberal.

But I never fell in love with the area or enjoyed the visits. I guess the area gets old after a while. I can see where it would be new for the younger fans.

There is something to be said for being able to drive home after a game in Charlotte at my age. But still yet, I think it's more about the good exposure we get up there ... we need to make it our backyard.

Actually the whole state of NC, we have to do better there. They produce twice the D1 prospects that we do (with twice the population) and there are some real untapped areas for us ... around Fayetteville (where we pulled Brad Edwards from), and up around Greenville (NC) ... those are some real hotbeds as well. But Charlotte is the prize right now and the area produces a lot of D1 football, and men's and women's basketball, prospects ... and it's close.

Chapel Hill is not a fun place to watch a football game IMHO. Basketball is another story. Baseball, meh. We have not fared well up there historically and their fans, all sports really ... they are kinda shitty to be around. I mean you really have to experience them up there to understand what snobby fricks they are.

Charlotte has some powerhouse high schools now. Mallard Creek is a new one, and they have already won the state title if I am not mistaken.

Lots of good baseball talent too. Butler, Vance, and Ardrey Kell are all pretty good teams.

Makes sense to play them in Charlotte..

Like SCRooster explained, SC has a growing presence in Charlotte but it's strategically important athletically and academically we continue to drive that momentum.

I remember reading somewhere that South Carolina alums are the 2nd largest alumni base in the Charlotte metropolitan area...
