Carolina baseball and the "Lexington KY" funk. been looking at the series history against UK the past couple of days and a few things jumped out.

first, USC is 48-34 all-time against UK. Gamecocks have dominated the Wildcats in Columbia. UK has won just twice since the 1999 series, having suffered a total of 22 losses at Sarge & the Ray.

Hagan stadium in Lexington has, at times, been a nightmare for USC. Carolina has won 15 games and dropped 21 all-time during the regular season. Gamecocks have swept the Wildcats twice on their home diamond, won 4 of the 12 series, and won at least 1 game in 9 of 12 visits up there.

the painful part is 8 of USC's 21 total losses in Lexington have been by a single run. 5 of those 8 one-run losses have occurred in the 4 series played at Hagan stadium since 2009 - which is why it feels like hell on earth when Carolina takes the field up there.

the most gut-wrenching series was 2012, which included two 1-run losses. USC blew a golden opportunity T9 on friday to extend a 3-2 lead when it loaded the bases and failed to score. moments later - Evan Beal got tagged for a one-out, 2-run walk-off homer B9 after striking out the side B8. Saturday's game saw USC take a 3-2 lead T6 only to allow KY to score a run in each the 6th & 7th innings. Gamecocks stranded the tying run in scoring position in both the 8th & 9th. Michael Roth smacked a first pitch PH double to lead off the 9th. he was bunted over to 3B next AB and was left stranded as USC couldn't put a ball in play ending the game on 2 final strikeouts.

the craziest game was likely game 1 in 2009 where Carolina beat Kentucky by a final of 20-19. Gamecocks held a 20-7 lead at one point, but survived allowing 12 runs in UK's last 3 at-bats to hold on in a wild one that included 11 home runs.

the longest win streak for either team in Lexington is 7 games. UK did it and then USC broke the streak with 7 consecutive Gamecock victories on the Wildcats home diamond. Holbrook's 2014 Gamecocks ended the only other 7 game streak, winning 8-3 on Sunday last time Carolina played up there. adding to the frustration, USC dropped a 1-run game the day before or it would have won the series.

2009...W-L-W (1-run loss on Sat)
2010...W-L-L (1-run loss on Sat)
2012...L-L-L (1-run loss on Fri/Sat)
2014...L-L-W (1-run loss on Sat)

here's to exorcising some recent demons up there with consistent/clutch hitting, great pitching and clean baseball for the Gamecocks this weekend ... and get the hell outta Lexington with a series win

Didn't get to watch the games this weekend, but apparently didn't miss much. We have to win the series this weekend now though.

Yesterday may have been our most frustrating loss of the season.

Yesterday just proves why a lot of people don't believe in Holbrook.

I am holding out judgment until June, but the one thing that is driving me crazy is that we have kept Jones in the line-up this long. Why not play Cullen at catcher, Hopkins in the outfield, and DH Destino? Also, keep Stokes at 2nd, and that is our best offensive lineup.

Something crazy has happened with Jones. At first, it seemed like he couldn't hit a breaking ball, but this weekend proved that he (currently) can't hit a fastball either. We need him, but he is just not delivering.

Tied for first in the conference, 36-11 after a bad year, and in great position for a national seed and people still want Holbrook gone? He's made mistakes, no doubt. But this year he's put us in a great position and it's been a remarkable turnaround.

I agree he needs to make some noise in the postseason this year or he's in trouble, but hearing his name after every loss gets old. Nobody is saying anything when we're winning.

Just my two cents.

Something crazy has happened with Jones.

it's hard to watch him struggle at this point. hate it for him.

was just checkin out the 247/TBS (cut off my subscription last fall so I only see the free content) and apparently Holbrook came out and said he had no intention of replacing Jones in the lineup. also saw where McCreary/Sportstalk tweeted a Holbrook quote out of context a bit involving "angry fans" who eat chips and drink cokes. maybe CIYE or anyone who has a sub to 247 can expand a bit on what went down.

anyways, Whittle/TBS posted Jones' numbers during this bad stretch. 11 for his last 72, 23 Ks & 11 BB, 6 doubles and 7 RBI. I think the bigger concern is if he's gonna be in the order, why is he hitting 5 or higher through this stretch?

the worst strikeouts in Lexington came sunday T9 with Destino/Cullen/Stokes no question - but having Jones/Arendas in any starting-lineup at this point is double jeopardy. 4 (DC 3/JJ 1) in game 3 last weekend. even with Tolbert's low average, he still puts the ball in play (team low 12 K's) and has hit into 1 double-play in 169 total at-bats this season.

Jonah Bride has raised his BA in league games almost 20 points to .284 since the UF weekend. Cone & Destino are still the only 2 regulars over .300 in SEC play. to their credit, those 3 guys are hitting for a higher average in SEC games than their overall BA as well.

last word on Lexington - after looking it up both LSU and Florida have lost each of their last two series playing at UK. Tigers 1-5, Gators 2-4. UF lost this year in improbable fashion after throwing a walk-off wild pitch that scored the winning UK run in extra innings to drop the series. that happened after UF gave up a game-tying HR to lead off the B10 as well. ~~ UK has clearly sacrificed something once alive and buried it in their stadium, probably out in that 310' RF corner or under that damn high wall strategically placed in the power alley - which they deem in play.

After the first two games, it definitely felt like a big win today. Hopefully that momentum carries forward into Ttown and beyond

Gamecocks in Tuscaloosa - 7 SEC series, 9 wins 12 losses, 2 series wins (2003 & 2011).

1995 > 1-2
1999 > 1-2
2001 > 0-3
2003 > 3-0
2005 > 1-2
2007 > 1-2
2011 > 2-1

USC last trip to Tuscaloosa was also the final SEC weekend before Hoover. Roth took the loss on thursday in a 2-1 ballgame. Forest Koumas & Colby Holmes both got wins on fri/sat and Matt Price recorded 2 saves. Carolina's series win clinched a share of the 2011 SEC title with UF/VU at 22-8. Alabama entered that series with a 31-22 (13-14) record.

2016 - Alabama owns a 15-12 SEC record, 7-5 in conference home games. they have won 5 of their last 6 SEC games beating Auburn 2 of 3 at home and sweeping at Arkansas. UA is 30-21 overall and host Samford tuesday before Carolina arrives.

Great win to take the series tonight...Jones got a huge 2-run HR tonight: hopefully it helps give him confidence to get out of his long slump, but he appeared to struggle with his other ABs as he has struggled before, so we'll see.

The Gamecocks assured themselves a top 4 seed which earns them a SECT bye to the 2nd round. They need to sweep tomorrow, and for BOTH Miss State and Texas A&M to lose tomorrow to win at least a tie for the SEC regular season title.

The Gamecocks can still win the East over UF as the Gators lost to LSU tonight, but still have 2 more games to play starting tomorrow (including a rain-delayed resumption of their Thursday Game #1 tomorrow, which is currently 0-0 in the bottom 3rd).

Either way the Gamecocks have won 19 SEC gms for the first time since 2011, and are very close to earning a national seed. Perhaps sweeping Bama plus a better showing at the SECT next week than their usual 2 and BBQ outings they typically have there, would seal the deal for them. Lets keep it going!

Current SEC standings:

Texas A&M: 20-9, 41-12
Miss State: 20-9, 39-14
South Carolina: 19-9, 41-13*
Florida: 18-9, 43-10*
LSU: 18-10, 38-16
Vanderbilt: 17-12, 40-15
Ole Miss: 17-12, 39-16
Alabama: 15-14, 31-23
Kentucky: 14-15, 31-24
Georgia: 11-18, 27-28
Missouri: 9-20, 26-28
Tennessee: 8-21, 28-27
Auburn: 8-21, 23-32
Arkansas: 7-22, 26-28

* USC and UF had one SEC gm cancelled due to weather (the SEC regular-season championship goes to team with best winning % - not most wins. A win-loss tie will result in co-champions: other tie-breakers such as divisional records will determine SECT seeding. USC currently is 2nd to UF in divisional % should both teams finish 20-9 (USC losses @ Vanderbilt, @ UGA, and @ UK are hurting us here)

Way to go Gamecocks! Now lets gear up for the SEC Tourney, and hopefully keep the wins coming. With the sweep of Bama today, a lot of online "insiders" are saying we're in strong position for a national seed, but doing well in Hoover would only further cement that for us...

The league announced its coaches’ votes on Monday and outfielder Gene Cone was named first-team All-SEC. Right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt earned second-team All-SEC honors.

South Carolina had four players make the SEC All-Freshman team, including catcher Chris Cullen, first baseman LT Tolbert and starting pitchers Braden Webb and Adam Hill.

Didn't have anyone make the SEC All-Defensive Team even though we ended up 2nd in the SEC in fielding %. I guess that's OK: it means we played our defense more as a team than having any one or two players stand out. That's OK and means we're more solid throughout the fielding team - no star defenders, but also no really poor defenders we need to cover up. OK, so we got Destino, but after him I meant lol.

Ray Tanner's signature for his teams were team defense. Maybe even more so than good pitching and hitting. We often had mediocre hitting, but even with mediocre pitching we could back them up behind them with our gloves. USC was never worse than 3rd in the SEC in fielding % since 1999 through Tanner's transition to AD. Hopefully Coach Holbrook has figured out that little formula for successful Gamecock baseball.....

Well, at least Holbrook is following Tanner's blueprint of playing like hot garbage in Hoover.

It's hard to see us being a national seed if we don't win today. Frankly we aren't playing like one right now.
