We are going to be seeing a lot of #DOMination or #DOMbomb this year. The man can flat swing the bat.

Gamecocks open the season in impressive fashion over Albany, winning 10-1.

Clarke Schmidt (1-0) gets the win in his first start this season: he pitched 6 inning with 6 Ks, allowing 3 hits and 4 walks, and giving up one earned run.

Colton Provey, Tyler Johnson, and Tyler Haswell relieved from the BP for 3 innings of shut-out pitching, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and fanning 5 of the 10 batters they faced....

Gamecocks 3 JUCOs - Dom Thompson-Williams, Jonah Bride, and John Jones combined to go 5 for 9 with 6 RBI and 6 runs....

Top 4 of the lineup - Mooney, Thompson-Williams, Destino, and Bride - combined for 7 for 16 with 3 RBI and 8 of the game's 10 runs scored....

I got to watch most of it on my WatchESPN app ... we looked impressive, but I'm not sure how much of a test Albany really is after seeing them play.

We need to keep improving - but it was a decent start.

We hit a lot of balls on the screws today, just right at guys. I am okay with the performance this weekend. Eventually some of those shots will find holes.

The ABs today were night and day from last year. Our guys can hit just got unlucky through the first 5 innings today. Albanys pitcher was just Damn good today. I look forward to us actually playing a team with a pulse though.

I'd like to reiterate what I said on January 31st regarding Adam Hill after his peformance so far today.

quote:

3rd starter is up in the air right now, watch out for Adam Hill who could get a shot in the rotation, he pitched pretty well on Saturday.

9 Strikeouts in 5 shutout innings so far in his first start against Appalachian State

Very impressive debut outing from Adam Hill - 2-hit scoreless baseball through 6 innings, with 11 Ks! That's hard to get 11 Ks in a game even for a seasoned, accomplished veteran, and Adam's already put his standard high in the sky in his opening debut.

Which was the more impressive debut as a freshman on the mound: Wil Crowe's 6.1 hitless performance (with 5 Ks, 1 BB, and 1 HBP) against Bucknell 2 seasons ago, or this one? I guess Crowe's debut was as a member of the weekend rotation, but hopefully Hill continues his dominant location of the zone.

The hitting by the Gamecocks wasn't as good as I would've liked to have seen, but we made the most of our 5 hits with 5 runs and 4 rbis.

Tomorrow's game with Winthrop may be rained out. Forecasts are calling for early rains ending around when the 4 pm projected starting time, so depending on how heavy the rains are, or if the weather front delays in it's rolling through, we may get the game in with perhaps a slight delay. We'll see....

Aaron Fitt tweet about Adam Hills performance:

One of those big freshman arms for @GamecockBasebll, Adam Hill, dazzled in his first start today: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K. Cocks won 5-0.

I'm Back! Received a temp ban for comparing ISIS to UTk, just so you know, y'all probably shouldn't do that.

Our pitching has been great so far, but that's given that we also have only played 4 games and not against elite competition yet. Still, Adam Hill's debut went just about as good as I've seen. This guy could end up being a super talent for us. We have more depth at P than I thought we would this season, with Crowe and Mincey out.

Yes the opponents we've face thus far haven't been the most formidable, and Penn State this weekend won't be much better, but our team is relatively young and/or inexperienced playing together. A bunch of freshmen and JUCO newcomers. So it's good to see many stepping up with good performances, getting some confidence and learning their roles.

We still could be seeing players struggling to get hits or score runs, or pitchers struggling with their locations and pitch-counts, but instead we're seeing quite a number thus far with stellar outings. So at least that's a good start in that sense.

Hopefully they continue to play well and prepare for Clemson which comes up weekend after this upcoming one with Penn State: THAT series will show who's ready to play some ball....

John Jones is pretty good at baseball. Solo shot, 1-0 SC after 1.
