South Carolina will host outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams on an official visit beginning today (Wednesday) and will last until Friday morning. Thompson-Williams told me that he doesn’t really have any other schools he’s considering at the moment and he’s going to see how this visit goes.

There’s at least one person in Cody Morris’ circle that believes it’s not a slam dunk that he comes to school. Morris has been up to 96 mph this high school season and there has been talk of teams throwing around the major money he’d want to skip school. Morris would have to be a first round pick to consider going, but that’s also not entirely out of the question.

DTW's comments on possibly getting drafted:

“I talk to the scouts and they know I’m open but they also know I want to get an education and my mother wants me to get an education. I’m open, but schooling is really big for me.”

RHP Commit Nick Neidert makes the MLB.com Top 100 Prospect list for the 2015 Draft.

#78 Overall

LINK

quote:

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

Following a star turn at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in October and a fine start to his senior season, Neidert was pushing to go as high as the supplemental first round. Then he came down with elbow tendinitis, which affected his stuff and sidelined him toward the end of the season.

When he was fully healthy, Neidert was pitching at 92-94 mph and peaking at 96 with his lively fastball. He has an advanced changeup for a high schooler, maintaining his arm speed and imparting some fade when he throws it. He did a better job of spinning his curveball, though some scouts wonder if he might be better off throwing a slider.

Neidert lacks ideal size at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, though he generates his velocity with athleticism and arm speed rather than effort. The South Carolina recruit is a good athlete who lives around the strike zone.

After digging in on some draft things over the course of the past week, I expect 2015 infielder LT Tolbert (Piedmont/IMG Academy) to find his way to South Carolina this summer. The numbers just don’t add up for him to sign a professional contract as the signing bonus he wants isn’t close to what MLB teams would be willing to pay.

This is shaping up to be a good year for the Gamecocks as it relates to the draft as it stands right now on May 11. The top two players that South Carolina has to be wary of signing are Nick Neidert (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) and Adam Hill (Anderson/T.L. Hanna).

The Gamecocks lost a member of the 2015 class today as Tyler Romanik out of Blythewood decommitted and has committed to CofC.

From what I've been hearing it's mainly because he was going to have to walk on and receive no scholarship from USC, whereas he would be put on scholly at CofC.

Coach Holbrook and the Gamecocks got another JUCO commitment today: Neosho County Community College infielder Jonah Bride announced on twitter he's coming to South Carolina:

quote:

Jonah Bride ?@JBride11 3h3 hours ago

I have committed to play baseball in the SEC at the University of South Carolina. Blessed to have this opportunity! #Gamecocks

Bride led Neosho County to a 42-16 record this season, hitting .471 in 58 games - all starts - with 14 HRs and 93 RBI in his first year with the team. Bride will join the Gamecocks as a sophomore and have 3 years to play.

TheBigSpur has a free article about Bride's commitment:

quote:

As a first-year player at Neosho C.C., Bride hit .471, which was the fourth-highest batting average in the country. He also had 93 RBIs, which was second in the country and was third nationally in doubles with 26 in his 58 games played.

As good as Bride’s numbers were offensively, he’s known primarily for his defense. He could play second base, shortstop or third base upon his arrival to campus.

Looks like this draft class is going to hold, pretty huge imo.

Nick Neidert went 60th overall, and he was really the only one that was going to be a for sure sign most likely.

Guys like Logan Allen, Chris Cullen and others have yet to get drafted, fantastic sign.

Also Schrock not being picked yet either is a huge get for next year, as long as it continues throughout Day 2.

Yeah, no 18 year old is walking away from a $1.2M check. Good luck to him. I understand why we recruit guys like him, it sucks when they go Pro though, he would've been a weekend starter year 1 for us.

Perfect Game has rated our 2016 class as #1 in the nation:

At least we can't say that Coach Holbrook and his staff ain't trying. Hopefully the influx of talent will help get the program back on track. If it doesn't, the reason why may be clear for all to see....

awesome and not awesome, b/c that means a few of those guys are probably going Pro. I never think any guy rated in the Top 50 Overall out of HS is going to play college ball.

Holbrook is to recruiting what Ray was to coaching.

Exactly, good for Holbrook in terms of saving face...

But bad when you consider a third of the class could be drafted.
