The coaches and players who worked with him there don’t think he’ll have any trouble transitioning back to college football after being named South Carolina’s new co-defensive coordinator earlier this month.

“I think it’s going to benefit him from being in the NFL for such a long time,” said Alex Brown, who starred for the defense that Hoke coordinated at Florida and later played in Chicago while Hoke was the Bears defensive backs coach. “Most players are looking to get to that next level, and when you are a coach who has coached at that next level, you have their attention the minute you walk into the room, and that’s what you want.”

quote:

“They’re going to play hard; they’re going to be disciplined; they’re going to know what they’re doing,” said Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith, who hired Hoke in Chicago in 2009. “Jon is a detail-oriented coach. They are going to play hard every snap.”

Before coaching with the Bears from 2009 through 2014, Hoke coached the Houston Texans defensive backs from 2002 through 2008. He was hired in Houston by Dom Capers and later retained by coach Gary Kubiak.

quote:

“Jon will do a great job,” said Kubiak, now the coach of the Denver Broncos. “I know they will play hard. They’ll play hard as (heck). Jon really gets after his guys, has tremendous expectations for their effort. He’s a (heck) of a teacher.”

quote:

The three Florida defenses coordinated by Hoke finished on average 27th in the nation in total defense, including ninth in his final season, which is one of the reasons Capers chose to hire him at Houston after Spurrier resigned as Florida’s coach.

“I think he’s one of the very best,” Capers said. “He’s got a good personality. He’ll relate well with the players. He’s a very good teacher, and he’s a technician.”

quote:

Capers, though, doesn’t think Hoke necessarily will mandate a new system for the Gamecocks.

“I think what he’ll do is he’ll evaluate the talent,” said Capers, now the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator. “He’s been around long enough to know that you adapt what you are doing to what your guys do the best. Obviously, he’s been in that scheme for a while, but I think he’ll look at what they have and adapt.”

I'm on the fence. I ran the numbers on his defenses in that other thread. They were good in college...12 years ago. However, his pro defenses (he was just a Position Coach though) were not great on average. He had some awesome years, and then several bad years.

He's the Captain now though, so we'll either sink or swim with him. I hope he can come in and bring some better scheming for the players we have, like Capers said.

It will absolutely be an advantage for him when he's recruiting DB's, he'll be able to say "I know exactly what it takes to be an NFL DB and I've coached some of the best."

I disagree with you on this one. While it is clear that Hoke gets the final say so on the defense, I believe he is going to be a great teacher to the players and coaches and the defense will have a good unity. I think everyone is going to work together well and we will see improvment.

I've only talked to one person, so far, that actually works with him. Everyone else has been scarce around there since Signing Day and it'll probably be that way until Spring Practice starts-up.
