I've never been a huge Seddon fan the past two years, but if he's pitching as well as the staff says he is then let him have it. I'm excited for him and can't wait to see what he'll do on the mound. I agree that there's a ton of talent, seems like there's about 10-12 peeps that should be in the lineup but there's only 9 spots. Interested to see how Holbrook handles the lineup.

Projecting Opening Day Lineup

His Projection:
1. SS Marcus Mooney
2. 2B Max Schrock
3. 3B Joey Pankake
4. 1B Kyle Martin
5. C Grayson Greiner
6. LF Elliott Caldwell
7. DH Taylor Widener
8. RF Connor Bright
9. CF Tanner English

LHP Jordan Montgomery

My Other Possible Starters:
SS/3B DC Arendas - The shortstop battle's still really up in the air in my opinion, but I agree with JW that Mooney will start. Both players defense are on par with each other but it's hard to replace a typical leadoff hitter and not have him in the order. The only way I think you have Mooney on the field is that you have Arendas at 3rd & move Pankake to LF. Then you have a battle for the DH spot. You could also just have Arendas in the order for his bat, but then you would be replacing Widener.

DH Brison Celek - DH'd in some key spots last season & also had some key hits, would maybe have been the projected starter if he had not had back issues in the preseason.

ETA: Also the weekend rotation has been announced it will be Jordan Montgomery (Fri), Jack Wynkoop (Sat) and Wil Crowe (Sun).

Is Seldon the next great USC Closer?

free article.

quote:

Elite closers have been a staple in Columbia for the past decade or more.

From Scott Barber (15 saves in 2000) to Lee Gronkiewicz (19 saves in 2001) to Blake Taylor (21 saves in 2002) to Chad Blackwell (20 saves in 2004) to Matt Price (43 saves from 2010-12) to Tyler Webb (17 saves in 2013), the royal line of champion closers for the Gamecocks dates back to the beginnings of USC's baseball revival.

Is junior righthander Joel Seddon ready to join that special group and earn his place as one of the best closers in school history?

Starting Saturday when South Carolina squares off with Bucknell in a season-opening separate admission doubleheader, we'll begin to get an answer to that question.

Seddon, who pitched 18 innings in 11 appearances a year ago and compiled a 1-1 record and 4.50 ERA, has no career saves, but that statistic didn't stop USC coach Chad Holbrook from naming the St. Clair, Mich., native as USC's closer at the outset of the season.

Pankake ready for 3rd base

quote:

A year ago, Joey Pankake hit .311 with 11 home runs and 42 RBI, good enough for second on the team in all three categories and good enough to be the returning leader in all three categories heading into 2014.
As the top returning hitter for for a projected national seed and Omaha favorite, why, then, is Pankake still regarded as the No. 40 college pitching prospect in the nation by Baseball America despite never having thrown a pitch in the college game?

"Some people see different things," Pankake said. "If it comes down to it, I'd pitch if I have to, but I want to hit as long as I can."

USC coach Chad Holbrook hopes "as long as I can" means mid to late June and ends in Omaha, Nebraska. Holbrook said the switch to third base - or possibly left field, depending - will allow him to focus his attention to the plate where he will be at the heart of the Gamecocks' order.

"He's a power hitter, big, strong, physical kid," Holbrook said. "Very very versatile, very athletic. We think Joey will have a great year over at third, but he's also versatile enough to play the outfield and work in the outfield from time to time.

Really interested to see how the bullpen will be this season. Biggest question mark on this team. Bullpen was pretty bad last year minus Westy & Webb, gotta wonder who steps up in their place this year.

Hopefully Seddon will be one of the answers.

Greiner eager to make mark

quote:

Projected as the No. 24 college draft prospect in the country by Baseball America, there's little doubt this will be junior catcher Grayson Greiner's last season for No. 7 South Carolina.
Just a freshman when the Gamecocks made the championship series in Omaha in 2012, Greiner now is a leader looking to leave his own mark on a program with a solid group of veterans aided by the nation's No. 3 recruiting class. Despite the new faces, the goal - as always - remains the same: win.

"I feel like it's me, Joey (Pankake), Jordan (Montgomery) and Hunter (Privette)'s team," Greiner said. "We've been named the four captains and we want to lead these guys back out there (Omaha).

"I'd say defensively we'll be a bit better than we've been in years past. We have six or seven returning position players, and this freshman class of pitchers is very very talented. If these guys can mature like I think they'll mature, I think we're going to have a really talented group. We all get along really well and are a tight-knit group. I think we'll be good.

They finished 4th last year in the Patriot league.

They are returning some good guys with decent stats.
