According to John Whittle of TheBigSpur.com the early favorite to start @ 3B next year is transferring out of the South Carolina program.

quote:

Infielder George Iskenderian will transfer and will not be a part of the South Carolina program going forward. Iskenderian met with head coach Chad Holbrook on Wednesday to solidify the decision.

Iskenderian started nine games and played in seven more in his freshman season. He hit .250 with six RBIs and 10 strikeouts against three walks. When he played, he was on the field primarily in the designated hitter role.

Iskenderian served as the team’s backup third baseman this season behind senior Chase Vergason, who started 60 of 63 games.

With the departure of Iskenderian and Vergason at third base, there will be a gaping hole that needs to be filled. Rising junior Connor Bright spent time at third base during the fall. Junior college signee Elliott Caldwell played the position at Spartanburg Methodist and will also be firmly in the mix.

Two-year starter at shortstop Joey Pankake could also man the position if the coaching staff decides to use the rising junior in a pitching role as well.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pankake move over there, if it means we can use him as a closer. We need bullpen help, surely we've got someone in the wings who can play short.

Pankake has done a fine job at shortstop, but I really think he provides more value if we can use him at closer seeing as how we lost pretty much the only two relievers we really had all last year.

Yep Pankake moving over to 3rd is a viable option, there's always a chance of Saiko/Bright moving back to the infield. I think it depends on Pankakes adjustment to 3rd & if we can have an everyday shortstop nearly as good as Pankake in either Arendas or the SS 2013 Commit Gore.

We've got some talent we basically redshirted, and some other talent coming in, that will fill that 3rd base hole if nothing else. We're still loaded, and reloading, and I'm not too worried about losing a player here and there - it's natural - it's gonna happen each and every year.
