We ended 2016 on a positive note and the team/Holbrook met my minimum expectations of making Super Regionals. We weren't able to capitalize on hosting the Super Regionals. and that was unfortunate, but we had one of the youngest teams in the Post Season.

I'll go ahead and put out there now, that my minimum expectations for the 2017 season are for this team to make the CWS, and considering the talent returning and incoming, I don't think that expectation is unrealistic. What are your expectations for the Yardcocks in 2017?

- We have 3 of 4 Freshman ALL SEC returning in SP Hill, INF Tolbert, and C Cullen. We have All SEC P Clark Schmidt returning. We have another All SEC P Wil Crowe returning as well. We have Josh Reagan and Tyler Johnson returning. We have one of the best Fr P's incoming in Haire. Plus we'll have Cody Morris back and he was as big of a deal as getting Crowe out of HS. Our Pitching staff was in the Top2 in the SEC this year and we'll be even better/deeper next year. Since all of UF's guys were drafted, we'll have the best/deepest Pitching Staff in the SEC next year.

- We lost 2 of our most clutch hitters in DTW and Cone, but Hopkins, Tolbert. Ross Grosvenor all showed great potential late in the season when they got their chances at the plate. If John Jones can return to early season form and find his swing again this offseason, he, Destino, Stokes, Bride and the other guys listed will have us hitting in the Top4 of the SEC next year.

- We had an overall really solid year in Fielding% in the SEC this year and I would expect it to continue. Replacing Mooney will be key for the INF though, but we have 5 Consecutive Top10 Recruiting Classes and 3 of which were Top5 Recruiting Classes, we have an abundance of talent.

_ I think the coaches know that the team weakness was hitting this year (and even then the hitting wasn't terrible, it just wasn't elite), and they'll address it this offseason and into next year. We may see some turnover on our coaching staff if Espisto leaves for a HC job somewhere, or we may bring in some other volunteer hitting coaches.

Overall, I think it's fair to expect a trip to the CWS for this coming year, and for Holbrook's sake, he really needs to make that happen. After '17 we'll lose Schmidt, Crowe, Reagan and probably Johnson, so we'll be rebuilding the SP weekend rotation in '18 and the chances of a CWS run then won't be as high. I think it's fair to expect 1 trip to the CWS at least every 5 years for a program like SC, especially with all the success we've had this decade, and Holbrook needs to step up and deliver on that expectation. Holbrook did really well this year, winning the SEC East, almost winning the SEC, winning the Regional and getting us to Super Regionals, 6 players on All SEC or All American Lists and many recruits or players MLB drafted. However, we'll never be a program that is satisfied unless we are playing in Omaha with a chance to win it all, at least a few times a decade.

I think with Crowe coming back, and Tyler Johnson emerging as a stud, we should have one of the best pitching staffs in the nation next year.

I agree with what you said about the bats. Destino will be a monster, Jones should be better, and the break out hitter for us next year will be LT Tolbert. I hate that he didn't get many opportunities late in the season, but I think he will be a stud next year.

I see the lineup like this:
1. TJ Hopkins - CF
2. LT Tolbert - 2B
3. Alex Destino - LF
4. John Jones - Catcher/DH
5. Madison Stokes - 1B
6. Jonah Bride - 3B
7. Chris Cullen - DH/Catcher
8. Carlos Cortes - RF
9. SS... got me here. I really don't know who will step up.

Pitching:
Friday night - Crowe
Saturday - Schmidt
Sunday - Tyler Johnson/Adam Hill

Or will Johnson be the closer?

As far as expectations go, I definitely see next year as an Omaha type season. 45 regular season wins, 20-10 in the SEC, possible top-8 national seed.

That's the $ question right there. Johnson pitched well enough all year to earn a shot at being a SP, then the 1 game we started him, against a Top5 UNCW hitting team in the NCAA, he completely owned them. I guess it will depend on how the guys do this fall and spring. We won't know for some time.

I think it's fair to say Schmidt has a weekend SP position on lock. Crowe should have a weekend SP on lock, IF he returns to form (which I believe he will.) That 3rd weekend SP spot is going to be a battle b/w incumbent Hill, Johnson, Cody Morris, and Haire.

Overall, the SP for the weekend or weekday rotation is going to be ultra competitive this coming year, barring injuries. Coach Myers is going to have to go through a lot of data to find out who are the best options and that's a great problem to have.

Exciting stuff. Any idea who will play SS? Could LT shift over and play there?

It really was bizarre what happened to Jones this season, maybe next year he can provide a more consistent bat at DH/C for us. We should have a CWS-caliber team but you never know.

Possibly. Stokes might be the future at 1B, he has more reach than Tolbert. If we put Cortez in the OF (to replace DTW) we'll need a SS and 2B. I also think Jonah Bride will have 3B on lock.

On our current roster, that would leave us with Matt Williams and Jared Williams. Jared is a better 2B than SS, but neither got a ton of looks at the plate this season. Jared did better than Matt as far as hitting, but Matt got many more looks and had a higher OBP. B/w Jared and Matt, I would think Jared has a little more agility and could play SS better than Matt.

We have some new guys coming in though who may have a shot. Grant Bodison was a Perfect Game 1st Team All American SS. He's better in the field than at the plate though. Christian Flint is another incoming option, but Bodison is coming in much higher rated.

Mooney was a fantastic senior SS, who was better at the plate this year than I expected, so don't think we'll have anyone who can reload at or above that level of play.
However, we have a few options to see who can rise to the top.

There is another PG All American coming in, Joey Polak, but he's a 3B or 1B all the way. Great length but not great agility. If I had to take a guess right now, I think it might be Jared Williams at SS.

I am really hoping LT would fit into the lineup somewhere. Kid showed flashes of being really, really good this past year.

Right now I'm thinking Tolbert might be 2B and Jared Williams would be SS. We'll see what happens though.

Tolbert could be Max Schrock 2.0. A good power-hitting 2B.

Speaking about Schrock, I saw him play against the the Kannapolis Intimidators last month. He plays for Hagerstown. He had 3 Hits that game at 5 AB's, but his team wasn't much help at all that night. He's doing well this season though, He's batting .370 his last 10 games with 0 strikeouts. and he's .322 for the year to date. If he keeps this up, he may move up to AA or better soon enough.

It will be year five of the Holbrook experiment. I think it's more than fair to expect him to win the Clemson series, win at least one game in the SEC tournament for the first time, and a trip to Omaha even if we go 0-2 there. Anything less and it's time to get a proven head coach, imo.

As of June 1st the report was that Jared Williams will transfer out of the program. He may have changed his mind since then, but I've seen nothing on that....

I'm very excited for what the team will do next season. We had 3 freshmen in Cullen, Hopkins, and Tolbert who started predominantly the season, and it wouldn't surprise me if we had another 2-3 from the incoming class take major roles.

Also wonder if McIlwain will have a larger every-game role with the team next season now that he'll get to train and prepare with them during the off-season more, or if he'll focus more on FB. Guess we'll see how the FB season goes to answer that one....

Wow, that's unfortunate. He didn't get nearly as many looks this season at Matt Williams but did well with what he got. If it's not Jared, then maybe that Grant Bodison guy coming in will take that SS spot.

If he ends up being the starting QB, I think he'll still play BB, but it won't be as high of a priority.
